Small College.

Big Ideas. With class sizes no larger than 20, students read and discuss some of the greatest minds of Western civilization—from Aristotle to Aquinas—to address fundamental and persisting questions of existence. What is virtue? What is truth? What is beauty?

Whether in the classroom or hiking or stargazing, together with St. John’s faculty, students encounter great authors and their works and respond to ideas and arguments that lead them toward new perceptions of themselves and the world.

A New Career Path?

Online Community

Dedicated to Cybersecurity

Education

Want to explore what’s new in cyber security? A recently launched website, California Cyberhub, presents a virtual, nimble online community dedicated to developing the future workforce of ethical cybersecurity experts in California.

As new and emerging technologies catalyze and reshape the ‘Internet of Things’ economy, the demand for cybersecurity professionals continues to increase. A recent study reveals a demand for 45,000 cybersecurity positions in California alone. This demand is expected to grow by 10 percent year after year.

“The California Cyberhub website provides educators at all levels the resources and tools to support students to train for and excel in a cybersecurity career pathway while having fun as they learn,” said Amy Tong – Director and State CIO, California Department of Technology.

In addition to providing educational resources, the online tool www.ca-cyberhub.org includes a listing of cybersecurity competitions and events, including a recent California Cyber Innovation Challenge, which brought more than 100 student competitors from across the state to compete in a series of problem-solving challenges.

As students participated in the CA Cyber Innovation Challenge, representatives from the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, the Department of Technology, the National Guard, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Los Angeles Unified School District and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo met on the Cal Poly campus to lay out a plan for strengthening the cyber professional career pathway

infrastructure, including new training materials and online resources.

California has more than 900 teams in the CyberPatriot program, empowering thousands of students to learn valuable skills in a team setting similar to that of traditional high school sports. In addition to the CyberPatriot program, the California Cyber Training Complex created a first of its kind “Digital Forensics” Challenge at the California Cyber Innovation Challenge. Students collected and analyzed a combination of digital and physical evidence hidden in a car, thus simulating the process of a modern-day criminal investigation. This statewide competition included teams from an entrepreneurship school, a military academy, and two all-female teams.

The answer may surprise you.

CAN YOU AFFORD A PRIVATE CHRISTIAN

UNIVERSITY?

Your homeschooling efforts have laid a solid foundation, and you’d like

to send your son or daughter to a university that will build on what you’ve

started. Northwest University is a Christian college in Kirkland that has

provided high-quality, accredited academics since 1934. And while other

colleges tend to overlook a student’s spiritual life, here it is foundational.

The result? Nearly 90% of NU students report growing in their faith. It can be

tough to put a price tag on that, but ours may be lower than you think.

Tool for Educators

1. Start Early: Many parents make the mistake of waiting to teach their kids about money. We’ve met people who think even their teenage kids are too young to be bothered with such concerns. That’s far too late; most experts agree that kids should start learning about money as soon as possible. Depending upon the individual child and his/her aptitude, three years old is not too early to begin the process of instilling financial literacy.

2. Use an allowance: An allowance is the first, best tool for teaching your kids about money. Giving them a regular income will help train them for their working life. We believe it’s important to tie the allowance to household chores and tasks that are the child’s responsibility. This will teach them an invaluable lesson about the relationship between work and income.

3. Help them establish a bank account: After you’ve given your child his/her allowance, make sure it is deposited in a financial institution. Teach your children that the best place for their savings is in the bank or credit union, not under the mattress. Find a local bank or credit union that will set up custodial accounts for children. Wise financial institutions know that these kinds of accounts will help them create life-long relationships with their banking customers.

4. Involve them in the household finances: It’s crucial that you teach your children the value of money, and the value of purchases. They need to learn how far their allowance, savings, and eventually their paycheck will go. A great way to help them learn these lessons is by including them in part of the monthly bill-paying ritual. If they understand the costs associated with running a household, from mortgage payments to utilities, they’ll be less likely to take them for granted.

5. Let them get a summer job: Many parents don’t think their teenagers should have to work. Consequently, many teens grow into adults who don’t think they should have to work. The best way you can prepare your kids for their adult lives is to let them start early with part time or summer work. This will help them evolve from the allowance you set up in their childhood into the adult world of work. Good early experiences in a real workplace, even a minimum wage fast food job, will teach them how to handle themselves as part of the grown-up workforce.

6. Lead by example: Children learn everything from observing the world around them. This especially applies to the way their parents conduct themselves. Every time you go through a checkout line with your kids in tow, they are watching you and learning. That means it’s prudent to avoid impulse buys and frivolous

purchases in front of the kids. You can’t expect your kids to be good stewards of their money if you don’t manage yours well.

nTrajectory is offering a first-of-its-kind financial

planning platform allowing educators and students to

collaboratively model complex financial strategies and techniques.

OnTrajectory emphasizes high-fidelity graphs, which makes it

perfect for individuals learning the effects of compound savings,

tax-handling, expense management and other aspects of financial

planning.

Time magazine calls it “one of the best user interfaces available

in the retirement calculator world” and OnTrajectory offers pre-

defined scenarios that are both visually-striking and fun. Teachers

can create and distribute their own scenarios to illustrate key

concepts based on individual curriculum while students can

manipulate and experiment with them in real time.

In essence, OnTrajectory is a tool to plan a healthy financial life.

It’s flexible, allowing teachers and students to project income, and

expense investments over a lifetime, while defining tax, inflation

and growth rates.

Finances are important for everyone, and if you are smart enough to

think ahead, you need to think about retirement. The only problem

is that an easy to use retirement calculator that is also flexible is hard

to come by. The OnTrajectory platform sets out a viable financial

plan to follow to be financially stable in unstable times.

ONLINE COLLEGES: The Best Offerings

College students have a variety of needs. Fortunately, with improvements in technology and communication, online courses continue to improve. Many students consider the flexibility of online colleges ideal. Students who are ready to earn their degree are able to find the time and customize their school schedules to suit their particular needs.

OnlineCollegePlan.com compiled a list of the “best” online learning environments based on the following criteria:

• Freshmen Retention Rate

A school’s Freshmen Retention Rate is a strong indicator that students attending a school are satisfied with the quality of education that they are receiving.

• Graduation Rate

A school’s total graduation rate is a further indicator of how satisfied the attending students are with the quality of the education that they are receiving. The number of students that stick with a school for the entirety of their academic career strongly indicates if the school is a capable and quality educator.

• Average Cost of Attendance

The average cost of attendance for a school is an important ranking criteria due to the fact that the cost of education is one of the main limiting factors for many students. Additionally, an affordable education means a better return-on-investment for students.

• Overall Programmatic Flexibility

This is the overall delivery method of the education, or how well supported the online education is by the school’s educators and whether or not the degree program is fully asynchronous or only partially. Many distance learning students already have hectic schedules, so how well a school caters to these students by providing them with a flexible education is a very important aspect.

An interview with Nancy CampbellTwo of Nancy Campbell’s four children went to Anderson University for college after attending dual enrollment classes that AU offers to high school students. Mrs. Campbell says her two other children also attended dual enrollment classes at AU and found themselves well prepared for their college studies, thanks to the foundation laid by AU classes. She has been instrumental in Anderson University becoming the host site for the National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA) speech and debate regional competition.

WHAT ARE THE NAMES, YEARS AND MAJORS OF YOUR STUDENTS WHO ATTEND(ED) ANDERSON UNIVERSITY?

My daughter, Meg, (Class of 2015) took classes her junior and senior year (of high school): lab sciences and English, and she ended up majoring in English literature and minoring in Spanish! My youngest son, Ian, (Class of 2020) is currently in the honors program at Anderson University, majoring in psychology.

WHY HAS AU BEEN A GOOD FIT FOR EACH OF YOUR STUDENTS?

I loved that they could begin their college experiences in an environment which—in terms of the faculty and staff—was distinctly Christian. There were plenty of opportunities for a “soft fail“ and lots of teaching moments. The reputation of Anderson University continued to grow as each one of them began their journey, and that only added to their opportunities, wherever they went.

WHY HAS AU BEEN A GOOD FIT FOR THEM AS HOMESCHOOLED STUDENTS?

The smaller size classes and caring faculty and staff made the transition into college not just easy, but joyful and even exciting. Also, having been homeschooled and participating (in) lots of different experiences we created just for them—a Civic Volunteer Association, English and Scottish country dancing societies, as well as National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA) speech and debate and TeenPact programs, they were used to leadership roles. And this was a way of accepting larger ones. Meg became president of the Student Government Association at AU, started two separate societies on campus, and was granted the President’s Award on graduation. She is still thoroughly devoted to the school although she lives far away in Germany with her Air Force officer husband. She is pursuing a graduate degree while working at the Air Force Library. Ian is in the honors program at Anderson, and thoroughly loves it. He appreciates the academic rigor and Socratic interaction of those classes particularly. Thanks to the foundation they got at Anderson University, my first three graduated with honors, and Ian is on track to do the same. I am very, very thankful- to God be the glory!

WHAT, IF ANY, WERE YOUR CONCERNS FOR YOUR STUDENTS GOING OFF TO COLLEGE, AND HOW HAS AU BEEN FOR YOUR STUDENTS SOCIALLY AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY-WISE? WHAT SPORTS/ACTIVITIES HAVE THEY GOTTEN INVOLVED WITH AT AU?

Of course, poor decisions, or falling through the cracks, were our biggest concerns. The fact that we could manage some of that at home or from home when they took college classes in high school was helpful. I love the fact that AU knows its students. Zan’s and McBryde‘s experiences at (a different college) showed that they were just, for the most part, numbers on a grid. Of course, where they found their niches, that was less so, but the size and structure and policies of Anderson University keep that from happening, to a large degree. At the end of the day, we must just trust God to work his will in and through our children.

ANDERSON UNIVERSITY: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE HOMESCHOOLING FAMILIES AS THEY EVALUATE UNIVERSITIES?

PRAY. “You have not, because you ask not.” What if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously, and without reproach, and it will be given to him. (James 1:5). Stay engaged with your student, giving them encouragement when they do well, observing as much as you can, praying more! Ask observational questions in an encouraging way. Speak to them in a trusting manner, but ask pointed questions, in love. Go to the school and get to know it well, if you possibly can. Volunteer.

I would encourage parents of any college-bound student to take a good hard look at Anderson University. It is a wholesome, academically challenging atmosphere, with a good culture and community. Its graduates consistently do well, both in work and in life.

Eighty-eight Percent of Young Millennials Engage in Risky Behavior Behind the Wheel

A 2017 report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that 88 percent of young millennials engaged in at least one risky behavior behind the wheel, earning the top spot of “worst behaved U.S. drivers.”

These dangerous behaviors increase the risk of a crash and include:

• texting while driving• running red lights• speeding

These findings come as U.S. traffic deaths rose by more than seven percent in 2015, the largest single-year increase in five decades.

“Alarmingly, some of the drivers ages 19-24 believe that their dangerous driving behavior is acceptable,” said Dr. David Yang, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety executive director. “It’s critical that these drivers understand the potentially deadly consequences of engaging in these types of behaviors and that they change their behavior and attitudes in order to reverse the growing number of fatalities on U.S. roads.”

Texting While Driving• Drivers ages 19-24 were 1.6 times as likely as all drivers to report having read a text message or e-mail while driving in the last 30 days (66.1 percent vs. 40.2 percent).• Drivers ages 19-24 were nearly twice as likely as all drivers to report having typed or sent a text message or e-mail while driving (59.3 percent vs. 31.4 percent).

Speeding• Drivers ages 19-24 were 1.4 times as likely as all drivers to report having driven 10 mph over the speed limit on a residential street.• Nearly 12 percent of drivers ages 19-24 reported feeling that it is acceptable to drive 10 mph over the speed limit in a school zone, compared to less than 5 percent of all drivers.

Red- Light Running• Nearly 50 percent of drivers ages 19-24 reported driving through a light that had just turned red when they could have stopped safely, compared to 36 percent of all drivers.• Nearly 14 percent of drivers ages 19-24 reported feeling that it is acceptable to drive through a light that just turned red, when they could have stopped safely, compared to about 6 percent of all drivers. The new survey results are part of the AAA Foundation’s annual Traffic Safety Culture Index, which identifies attitudes and behaviors related to traffic safety. The survey data are from a sample of 2,511 licensed drivers ages 16 and older who reported driving in the past 30 days.
