    A message from Hoppes

Today, firearms have come under scrutiny from many

sources. And, in many cases, with good reason.

Those of us who hunt or shoot for sport, as well asmany who maintain firearms for security, are just asconcerned about the responsible use of guns as thepublic at large.

Your safe and responsible use of guns is the bestinsurance any of us can have for our own gunrights and the rights of future generations. We atHoppeshope that, in addition to taking proper careof your firearms, you will treat them with respect andremember to always act in a way that reflects wellon all of us. The NRA has three rules that, if appliedevery time you pick up a firearm, will greatly reducethe number of accidents caused by careless firearmhandling.

Always keep your gun pointed in a safe direction.

This ensures that even if your gun were to dischargeno one will be killed or injured.

Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

Always keep your gun unloaded until ready to use.Do not store a firearm in a loaded condition. If

you use a firearm for home protection, take extraprecaution in the storage of that gun. Store it so thatit is not accessible to unauthorized persons.

Ammunition should never bepresent while cleaning a firearm!

Be sure you know and follow federal, state and locallaws governing the sale and use of firearms.

Always get permission to enter onto the property ofothers. Never, under any circumstances, endanger

anyones life, individual rights or property.Always know your target and what is beyond. Besure that if you were to miss the target you are aimingat there is no one or nothing beyond the target thatmight be killed, injured or damaged.

When disposing of a firearm be sure it has beenrendered permanently unusable or impossible torepair. If you wish to dispose of a firearm that isstill in usable condition, please turn it over to localauthorities.

Be good to your gun and it will be good to you. Withregular cleaning, lubricating and rust prevention,

you should get many years of enjoyment and top

performance from your gun.If you prepare your gun correctly for any adversefield conditions and clean it at the end of each day

you use it, it will reward you with smoother operationand unwavering accuracy.

If you dont, you run the risk of fouling from powder, metal corrosion from moisture buildup and simpleneglect. All of which will eventually affect accuracy, cause jamming and shorten the life span of yourfirearm.

    Fouling from powder and metal

Over the years powders have been improved, butthey still leave deposits you cant even see.

If your gun isnt cleaned regularly, these powderdeposits eventually build up. When they do, they start

to affect accuracy. They also attract moisture, whichcan lead to rust.

Metal fouling is a different problem that occurs mostoften in handguns and rifles that use copper-jacketed,high-velocity loads.

The copper jacket leaves tiny metal fragments in the

barrel which creates rough spots. The rough spotscause further fragmentation after the next shot, andso it goes with every shot you make until the boreis cleaned. Like powder deposits, these irregularmetal deposits build up to a point where they affectaccuracy.

A simple barrel cleaning can prevent both types offouling and takes just minutes or, with new productssuch as the Hoppes BoreSnake, even less time thanthat (see page 12). So its well worth the little effort ittakes.

The effects of moistureon the life of your gun

Moisture is a problem that can seriously cut into thelife span of a gun. The effects are usually hard to see

until the problem becomes acute. Eventually, unlessyou take steps to prevent it, moisture damages a gunto the point of total uselessness.

    7/36

Condensation is one of the most insidious ways thatmoisture attacks your gun. If youre shooting outside ona cold day and then bring your gun into a warm room,

condensation takes place immediately on all metalsurfaces inside and out.

Any type of condensation or moisturewhether itsfrom moist air, rain, snow, fog or saltwaterwill startthe rusting process within 24 hours of contact. So,anytime you experience these conditions, remember to

    dry your gun immediately.

Saltwater will create even greater problems because itis by far the most corrosive type of moisture. If youreshooting in or near a salty marsh or the seashoreeven if youre a few miles awayremember that

theres plenty of salt in the air and take precautionsagainst it.

You can find tips on rust prevention and specialcleaning techniques to prevent corrosion in our sectionon Field Conditions (see page 15).

    Simple neglect

As long as a gun is cared for properly, it wont showthe effects of old age. But many sportsmen makethe mistake of thinking that if a gun is cleaned andlubricated correctly before being put away, it can stay instorage indefinitely without any further maintenance. That simply isnt true.

You do have to prep your gun properly before putting itaway. Its important that you store it in a clean, dryplace, preferably a gun cabinet or safe. Guns should

not be stored in gun cases. But, even though youvetaken all the right precautions, you still need to strip thegun down periodically and clean it thoroughly, eventhough it may not have been fired and is completelyprotected in storage.

If you follow our recommendations for cleaning, lubricating and storing, your gun will reward youwith many years of exceptional service. If you needproof, just stop in at a gun show or black powdercompetition. Youll see all kinds of antique firearmsthat still perform admirably in the hands of the skilledshooters and collectors who lovingly maintain them.

Most guns come from the factory with a light coatingof grease on all the metal parts. This is simply toprotect it against any corrosion that might occur if the

gun has to sit on the dealers shelf.

If the gun is still in its original box, it is safe to assumeit will be greased. If its a gun thats out of its box andon display, there may be a chance that the dealer hasalready degreased it.

The easiest thing to do is ask. But even if the answeris, Yes, weve cleaned it, its always a good ideato inspect your new gun yourself. If you run a fingerover the metal, youll be able to tell whether its oiledor greased.

Any grease has to comeoff before you use the gun

Grease is messy and you simply dont want it on

your hands or clothing while youre handling yourgun. There is also a practical reason for removingit. Grease can slow down the action and impede abullets speed through the barrel.

When you get your new gun home, clean it first with

regular Hoppes No.9. This will cut the greaseeasily and leave a thin protective coating on anymetal parts.

If you dont have a cleaning kit, now is the time toinvest in one. Hoppes Gun Cleaning Kits come withall the essential items you need to get you off to agood start:cleaning rod, patches, accessory ends, solvent and lubricating oil. In addition, consider theHoppes BoreSnakea revolutionaryall-in-one cleaning tool that is billed as(see page 12).

Many experienced shooters have their own preferredway of cleaning their guns and may even have theirfavorite rags and other materials theyve come to like

over the years. But here are some simple proceduresfor cleaning your gun so its adequately protected andready to use.

    A simple barrel cleaning

takes only minutesYou will need: cleaning rod, bore brush of propercaliber or gauge for your firearm, slotted end, clothpatches, Hoppes No. 9 Solvent of your choice,Hoppes Lubricating Oil, Hoppes Tynex or Phospher

Bronze utility brush, and a cleaning cloth.

Be sure the gun is unloadedand all ammunition has been

    removed from the cleaning area

    1. Attach the bore brush to the cleaning rod andmoisten with Hoppes No. 9. Starting from the breechend of the barrel, when possible, work the brushback and forth to loosen residue and fouling. Ensurethe brush passes completely through the barrel

beore drawing the brush back through the barrel.Starting from the breech end guards against anyaccidental contact between the metal rod and thefinely-machined rifling at the muzzle tip and reducesthe amount of fouling, deposits or metal fragmentsthat may fall into the action.

    2. Remove the bore brush and attach aslotted end to the cleaning rod. Insert acloth into the slotted end and, startingfrom the breech end of the barrel, push the cloth through thebarrel. Remove the cloth andrepeat process until the finalcloth comes out clean. Thiswill remove any lead andpowder deposits. If youvebeen shooting with copper-jacketed bullets, youll needto use Hoppes Bench Rest9. Bench Rest 9 has been specially formulated to cutcopper, as well as lead and any other build-up in thebarrel.

Even though you may have cleaned and lubricated your gun correctly before putting it away, it is amistake to think you can just go out and start shooting

after the firearm has been stored for long periodsof time. We recommend you give it a simple visualinspection to determine whatif anymaintenancemay be needed.

Make sure the gun isnt loaded and all ammunition issafely stored away from the gun.

Look through the bore to check for any rust. If you seerust, you will need to remove it. Make sure the actionmoves freely. If it feels stiff, lubricate it lightly.

Finally, as a routine measure, clean the bore beforeyou begin shooting. Hoppes makes the perfect field

cleaning tool for this chore in our Hoppe's FieldCleaner

Ideally, you should clean your gun after every use.Competition shooters, in fact, may want to clean theirgun several times during the course of a day. But here

are some practical guidelines that cover a wide rangeof typical situations.

If youre hunting, theres always a chance that gamemay be scarce and you may not get off too manyrounds. If thats the case, theres no reason to beobsessed with cleaning. But once youve fired off a

dozen rounds or more, cleaning is a good idea.A simple barrel cleaning, such as weve describedearlier, is perfectly okay if youre on a hunting trip forseveral days or in the heat of a competition. (Note:The Hoppes BoreSnake is an ideal take-along forquick cleanings in the field or at the end of a day of

hunting.)Youll need to do a more thorough cleaningperiodically to get at residues that are working theirway into the grooves.

A thorough barrel cleaninginvolves the use of a brush

Residues will eventually build up in a barrel, startingon a microscopic level. While patches will removeany surface residues, they cant get at the minute

buildup that occurs in the fine grooves of the barrel. This buildup ultimately defeats the purpose of thegrooves and thereby affects accuracy. So you shoulddo a thorough cleaning on a regular basis, depending on the number of rounds you shoot.

For a thorough cleaning, use a Hoppes cleaningbrush. There are several types available. Ourtraditional brushes have either Tynex bristles, whichis a nylon-like material, or Phosphor Bronze, which isa metal bristle softer than the metal in your barrel. Wealso manufacture a premium

    18

  • 8/14/2019 Guide to Gun Care

    21/36

Tornado Brush, which has a special spiral-wounddesign that eliminates any bristle ends. The traditionalbrushes are for the vast majority of sportsmen,

ranging from occasional shooters to serious hunters. The stainless steel Tornado Brush is for competitionshooters and purists who insist on a perfect finish inthe barrel.

The procedure for cleaning, however, is the same forall types of brushes. Clean the barrel first with patches,as weve described earlier in our recommendationsfor simple cleaning. Then wet the brush with a solvent either Hoppes No. 9, Bench Rest 9 or Semi-Auto

Solvent and run it through the barrel. When usinga brush, we especially recommend that you insert itfrom the breech end, not the muzzle end, wheneverpossible. While all brushes are perfectly safe to useon any gunmetal, the grooves at the muzzle tip areespecially fine and sensitive, and every care shouldbe taken to be gentle with them.

Once youve scrubbed the barrel thoroughly with abrush, go back again with a series of patches to pickup the residue that the brushing has dislodged.

Finally, soak a patch in Hoppes Lubricating Oil andrun it through the barrel to add a light coating of

    protective oil.

    Important note on brushes:

The phosphor bronze and Tornado brushes

should be run completely through the barrelbefore pulling either one back out.

They cant be reversed inside the barrel withoutbending, snagging or breaking the bristles, which

    can result in damage.

Tynex brushes can be run back and forthsafely while inside the barrel.

    Muzzleloading safety tips

Use only black powder or powders designed specifically foryour gun smokeless powders create extremely high

pressure. They can explode the barrel and cause

    serious injury.

Dont exceed the recommended powder charge exceedingthe maximum recommended charge only increases

barrel pressure and risk. It doesnt change the muzzle

    velocity.

Never load directly into the barrel from a horn or flask a smoldering ember from the last shot can ignite the

powder and follow it back up the barrel into the flask,

causing an explosion. Always pour from a separate

    powder measure.

Keep your face, hands and body clear of the muzzle use only

your fingers to seat the ball. Never put the palm of

your hand over the end of a ramrod.

Point the muzzle in a safe direction when loading never

prime or cap the gun until you know where the

    muzzle is pointed.

Seat the ball firmly on the powder charge dont try to

fire a ball that isnt properly seated. You can damage

    the gun and hurt yourself.

When in doubt, pull it out

if a ball isnt properly seated, make sure the gun isnt

primed or capped, and then get it back out with a

ball puller. Never try to fire it.

Dont smoke around black powder a hot ash can ignite it.

Treat it if it were as volatile as gasoline. It is!

    Bluing restoring the original finish

Traditional bluing is beyond the capability of thetypical gun owner. It involves dipping the firearm into

a vat of heated chemicals to produce a blue or lightbrown color to the metal. This is how the manufacturerdoes it.

Making touch up repairs to a blued firearm can be

done with a Hoppes Gun Blue Kit. The kit is completewith all the materials youll need and simple directionson how to use them.

Preparation of the surface is critical when bluing afirearm yourself.

If metal parts are nicked or scratched, sand them firstwith extra-fine sandpaper or 000 steel wool. Nextwhether you sand or notremove all traces of dirt, including fingerprints, with Hoppes Barrel Scrubber.Use a clean cloth or paper towel to rub the cleaner in,then again when you wipe dirt off. Now the surface isready for Hoppes Gun Blue.

Apply the Gun Blue evenly, makingsure all surfaces are covered. Thenlet the bluing compound stand forthree minutes. Dont attempt to rub itin this isnt necessary. After it hasset for the required time, rinse withclear water and check the result. Ifthe finish isnt as blue as youd like, repeat the process as many times asnecessary until you get the depth ofblue youre looking for.

Finally, apply a light coating ofHoppes MDL to protect againstmoisture.

f youre not going to be using your gun for a while,it will require some special treatment before putting itaway.

Be sure the gun is unloaded and all ammunition hasbeen removed rom the cleaning area.

Short-term storage less than a year. First, take the gunapart and clean it thoroughly as weve described inthe stripping section. But instead of applying HoppesLubricating Oil to all parts, apply it only to the woodand action. Coat the bore and all other surfaces withHoppes MDL, which provides superior protectionagainst even microscopic amounts of moisture. Thenstore your gun in a cabinet made for gun storage.

Long-term storage one year or more. The basic recom-mendations are the same. Strip the gun down andclean it thoroughly, then apply our Lubricating Oil tothe action and wood. However, instead of coatingthe remaining parts with MDL, you should now useHoppes Gun Grease which provides an even thicker

    layer of protection.

The best place to store a gun for a long period is in alocked gun cabinet.

A few other tips. Never plug the bore for storage.Plugging only prevents moisture from escaping and

actually increases the chances of rusting. Dont rest thegun on its rubber recoil pad.The pad can lose its shapeand resiliency in a hurry. Finally, when transporting

your gun, its best to carryit in a case for maximumprotection.

When youre ready to use thegun again, dont forget to removethe grease or MDL. Treat it just

the way you would a brandnew gun coming directlyfrom the manufacturer. Cleanit with Hoppes No. 9 andapply a thin coat of HoppesLubricating Oil afterward.

residues behind, Hoppes Elite: Cleans the firearm down to the pores Conditions the bore to repel additional fouling Provides a powerful lubricant and protectant Cuts cleaning time by up to 80% Saves you money

Hoppes Elite is for the hard core shooter, who needshard core cleaning. Hoppes Elite is approved as safeby all major gun manufacturers and it exceeds EPA andMILSPEC requirements.
