A- or C-train double trailer configuration

Authorized maximum total loaded mass = sum of axle loads, without exceeding 67,500 kg

B-train double trailer configuration

Authorized maximum total loaded mass = sum of axle loads, without exceeding 67,500 kg

Other double train configurations

Authorized maximum total loaded mass : The limit authorized by the Vehicle Load and Size Limits Regulation, plus 2,000 kg.

Requirements, configurations, lengths and load limitsAttachment of semi-trailersThe semi-trailer with the greatest loaded mass must beattached to the tractor, unless the difference in mass isless than 10%.

Axle loadAxle classes and the method used to determine axle loadlimits are as established by the Vehicle Load and Size LimitsRegulation.

Travel in a straight lineWhen the road train is travelling in a straight line, none ofthe semi-trailers may swing more than 80 millimetres toeither side in relation to the tractor.

DollyThe dolly must be equipped with a pilot relay valve designedto boost the braking signal of the second semi-trailer.

Speed recorderThe road train must be equipped with a device to monitordriver behaviour. The device must record significant speedvariations and the following information: date, time andspeed of travel.

Axle spreadThe maximum spread between the axles in the tandemaxle or triple axle group is 1.85 m. The Special Road TrainOperating Permits Regulation contains some temporarylayouts.

Height and widthLimits are spelled out in the Vehicle Load and Size LimitsRegulation.

Semi-trailer lengthAuxiliary equipment located in front of the semi-trailer isnot included in calculating the dimensions as long as suchequipment does not increase the road vehicle’s load volumeor, under the same conditions, the space for the fifth wheelat the back of the first semi-trailer in a B-train double.

SignageFor A-, B- and C-train doubles, a specific sign must be displayed at the rear of the second semi-trailer. The signconsists in a pictogram of a black road train on fluorescentyellow retroreflective sheeting with the following charac-teristics:

This sign is not required when the vehicle configuration isas follows: tractor + semi-trailer + dolly.

Note that the sign bearing the words “TRAIN ROUTIER”,which meets the requirements in effect before July 17,2014, can only be used in 2014 and 2015.

Tractor A road train tractor must have the following specifications: • Minimum engine horsepower of 1 hp per 180 kg of the road train’s total loaded mass;

• The air compressor supplying the braking system musthave a minimum capacity of 425 litres per minute.

In Québec, some road trains may only operate if their owner, lessee or operator has a special permit.

This guide presents the main provisions of the Special Road TrainOperating Permits Regulation and a few more rules applicable to these combinations of vehicles.
