ETSICCP (Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos)

The ETSICCP, Madrid, was founded in 1802 by Agustín de Betancourt, considered the founding father of the Civil Engineering in Spain, who promoted the creation of the Civil Engineering School in Madrid to train and educate professionals of Engineering and Construction. It belonged to the Spanish Ministry of Public Works from 1802 until 1957. In 1971, together with other Engineering Schools for other branches of engineering, became a member of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM)

From 1802 to 1834 the school had has some interruptions due to Napoleonic Wars, but since 1834 the school has been open without any interruption, the last 50 years in its current site.

Zarzuela Hippodrome cover (1935, Eduardo Torroja, who was professor at ETSICCP)

From its foundation on, the school has become one of the most prestigious centers in Spain that had a great influence in the social and political life since the end of the 19th century, contributing on the development of the country and becoming a referent Civil Engineering school in Spain and also for Latin America.

Renowned engineers, such as Echegaray, La Cierva, Torres-Quevedo, Saavedra, Cerdá, Torroja, Aguirre, Fernández Casado, Manterola, and numerous others who formed part of the technical, industrial and intellectual forefront of the country for many years, all studied at the School.

Finally, our record of accomplishment has been recognized internationally as well, becoming a top ranked institution, climbing for the second consecutive year, to the 5th position in the Shanghai Ranking (http://www.shanghairanking.com/Shanghairanking-Subject-Rankings/civil-engineering.html)

2. YOUR LEARNING AGREEMENT - RULES OF THE ETSICCP

Courses can be taken only during the semester they are offered. Please note that there are no changes from one academic year to another, i.e. courses are offered in the same semester every year.

In general, the courses that you can take at ETSICCP- UPM will depend upon

1) which subject agreement you are coming to us under

2) your specific academic background.

In order to complete the Learning Agreement, the following pre-requirements must be noted:

• Bachelor/undergraduate students must do courses of Bachelor programmes at ETSICCP-UPM (Bachelor in Civil Engineering or Bachelor in Materials Engineering).

• Master/postgraduate students must do courses of Master programmes at ETSICCP-UPM (Master in Civil Engineering. Master in Materials Engineering and Master in Civil Engineering Systems) as well as the subjets from the 3rd and 4th year of the Bachelor programmes. When in doubt, please list courses you are interested in on

Page 8: GUIDE FOR INCOMING STUDENTS - UPM · WELCOME TO MADRID! The staff of the International Relations Office at School of Civil Engineering, UPM (ETSICCP-UPM) is very pleased to welcome

4

your application and on your Learning Agreement and we will check this with the relevant department.

• The main number of courses you are planning to attend at UPM needs to be in our School (ETSICCP-UPM), within the subject area of the agreement you are coming to us under. If you are not sure of this, then ask your home international coordinator.

• Research-oriented Master programmes (e.g. Master in Structures, Foundations and Materials Engineering) are not generally applicable for exchange students. If you are interested in a course of such programmes, please, fell free to ask and we will inform you about the most equivalent course of available study programmes.

Modifications of Learning Agreement

Only one modification of the Learning Agreement will be permitted at each semester. This modification may however affect to several subjects. The deadline to give us the appropriate documentation is confirmed yearly. Illustratively, deadlines for academic year 2017/18 are: - September 26th: for modification of subjects of the 1st semester. - February 23rd: for modifications of subjects of the 2nd semester.

Individual projects and thesis work

Bachelor’s or Master’s projects/theses are individual works done by the students under the supervision of a professor. At ETSICCP-UPM, such projects/theses can be done in the 2nd semester only, they comprise 12 or 15 ECTS and have specific rules for completion and examination (additional specific rules also apply for double degree students). A grade only can be assigned (and ECTS earned) after completion of the project and consecutive defence in front of a 3-academics jury. In order for international students to carry out the Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis at ETSICCP-UPM, the following aspects must be considered:

• Students at ETSICCP-UPM for full academic year must apply as regular students during the 1st semester. The subject area of the project/thesis must be requested at the time of application, it is recommended a prospective supervisor identified in advance.

• Students at ETSICCP-UPM for the 1st semester cannot usually apply for a project/thesis.

• Students at ETSICCP-UPM for the 2nd semester only can be accepted for a project/thesis if they have already been accepted by a supervisor in advance.

Besides Bachelor’s/Master’s thesis, students who wish to do other individual project works during the exchange cannot receive a guarantee that they will be able to. In such cases, it is recommended to directly contact a department or professor well in advance travelling to Madrid. Anyway, no credits or ECTS will be granted from ETSICCP-UPM to such works. At most, such works can receive a particular assessment from the

supervisor.

5. GRADING

Grading at the ETSICCP-UPM is based on a 0-10 scale, 10 being the best possible grade. The passing grade is 5.0. The nomenclature and classification of the grades are as follow:

• SOBRESALIENTE: Grade between 9 and 10. Outstanding. • NOTABLE: Grade between 7 and 8.9. Remarkable. • APROBADO: Grade between 5 and 6.9. Pass. • SUSPENSO: Grade between 0 and 4.9. Fail.

In addition, the grade MATRICULA DE HONOR (10.0) can be used in exceptional cases to distinguish a student for her/his excellence. In order to provide equivalence for grades in the ECTS system, a statistical analysis of grade distribution has been made, taking several representative courses. The results obtained are presented as follows:

• A (best 10%): Grade between 8.3 and 10.0 • B (next 25%): Grade between 7.1 and 8.2 • C (next 30%): Grade between 6.1 and 7.0 • D (next 25%): Grade between 5.1 and 6.0 • E (next 10%): Grade equal to 5 • F (fail): Grade between 0 and 4.9.

6. HEALTH INSURANCE

All incoming students are required to purchase the OnCampus health insurance. It can be paid upon enrolment, and the prize range varies depending on the length of your stay in Madrid.
