    HOW TO USE THIS DOCUMENT

    The purpose of this document is to help issue diagnosis and solve malfunctions for the OneProd System product range. It aims at assisting the user by providing most commonly used procedures and referencing frequent situations. This document shall allow solving problems occurring in simple situations. This guide is based on the standard used on its release date:

    - Windows XP or Server 2003 environments - NEST ANALYST Desktop/WEB version 4.1.1a, - MVX - MVP

    How to use this guide:

    You know which method to use: Use the Table of Contents to find the procedure details. Use [Ctrl + left click] to go directly to the corresponding section of the document.

    You have encountered an error message of a context-related problem: Use the Error index to find the message. All sections where this message is referenced are listed on the right. Use [Ctrl + left click] on the page number to go directly to the corresponding section of the document.

    You have very little information on the encountered situation: Use the search function in this document. Use [CTRL+F]

    NEST ANALYST

    Firewall – Rights and Security

    BACKGROUND

    The Firewall is part of the security strategy (Windows firewall at the minimum). Its main role is to control the incoming and outgoing network traffic to/from the PC, by filtering the data flow according to “confidence zones”. Confidence zones usually include the Internet (a zone with zero confidence) and at least one internal network (a zone with higher confidence). The aim is to provide driven and controlled connectivity based on the application of the security policy and of a connection model based on the lesser privilege principle (the more restricted the privileges, the better the security). While the purpose of the firewall is to prevent any unwanted traffic, it can sometimes induce operating problems, in particular for software operating with a network layer. Many firewalls are delivered as a complement to an anti-virus program. All problems described can then be generalised for all firewalls and anti-virus programs. NEST ANALYST is particularly sensitive to any change to the security context, and can thus become unstable. Furthermore, the local system obeys many security rules: users’ rights. The system administrator, or domain administrator, can grant or deny reading, writing or modification rights to all or part of the system for the en user. NEST ANALYST can also be affected by any change to or bad set-up of these rights.

    PRE-REQUISITES

    As mentioned in the installation manual, we recommend installing NEST ANALYST only in an account with administrator rights on the target and deactivating the firewall. Otherwise, there is a risk of unpredictable dysfunctions. The firewall and rights management are dealt during the following operations:

    Installation of NEST ANALYST cannot be successful if the user is not the administrator of the machine. One must then make sure of it prior to any attempt. REMINDER!!! The user must belong to the ADMINISTRATOR and ORA-DBA groups for a normal installation of NEST ANALYST as specified in the NEST ANALYST installation guide.     The machine name (or “hostname”) is the unique alias through which a peripheral device on the network (here a local station, but it is also true for a file server, a network storage peripheral device, a fax machine, etc.) is recognised on the network. This name is used to identify a target network peripheral device.

    After the modification of the name of a local machine, a series of errors occurs. The reason for this is the incoherence between the configuration files of the Oracle database, which contain the former aliases, and the current name of the machine.

    In order to have the Oracle configuration correspond with the new name assigned to the machine, some files must be checked / modified. This method must be implemented in the same user session as that used for the installation of NEST ANALYST. Paths indicated in this method are default paths. For a customised installation, they may be different.

    Files LISTENER.ORA and TNSNAMES.ORA are located in this folder. Each file contains a “host” variable. One must check that its value corresponds to the new machine name. If required, change it.

    2. Save this new name as the client name in the database: Open window SQLplus (menu Start / oracle o10gas / Application development / PLsql or Start / Run, type: PLUS80W ediag/ediag@ediag). Access is achieved through ediag 3 times:

    One connected, check the client name saved using the following request: select distinct hostname from cli_env;

    The list of clients registered in the database is displayed. At this time, the new name of the machine, hence the new client, should not appear in this list. To register the new client, type in the following request by replacing CLIENT with the new machine name: update cli_env set hostname='CLIENT';

    Then validate the transaction using request: commit;

    3- Quit SQLplus and restart the computer. The NEST ANALYST application must return to its normal operating.

    1.1.7. Consequences of a domain name change

    CONTEXT:

    In some cases of network reconfiguration, the domain name is changed. The influence of this name change is similar to the change of the machine name. However, the update of the different applications cannot occur in the same way. While the hostname is written in the configuration files and can then be changed by the user, the domain name is linked to the Oracle installation.

    Recommended method:

    Since the symptoms for a domain name are the same as those for a name change, it is recommended that the related procedure be followed before going further. If this procedure fails, or if the domain name change is real, only uninstallation then reinstallation of the application will solve the problem. Refer to the NEST ANALYST installation manual for these operations. Formatting of the station can also be considered so as to take advantage of this maintenance operation.

    These operations must also occur after a complete backup under the former domain name and must be followed by a restoration of the databases after the installation under the new domain name.

    PATH: Problems related to the use of environment variables

    CONTEXT

    The PATH environment variable can be used by several processes running simultaneously. On each machine, the location of the main executable programs of the system can be different depending on the installation. Using the environment variables, a system location can be referenced by relying on the variable defining these data. Its minimum content is defined by Windows.     If so, is it active? If the Microsoft Loopback Adapter connection is disabled, select Enable after right clicking on this connection. Waiting until the connection becomes stable.

    IIS (Internet Information Service)

    1.1.14.Context

    Use:

    Internet Information Services (IIS) is the Web server (or HTTP) software of the Windows NT platform. The IIS server hosts the Web Service functions of XCOMDriver and also manages the FTP protocol used, among other things, for file transfer and management of measurements acquired on a MVX. Its installation requires the Windows installation disk corresponding to the version used on the station (see NEST ANALYST installation manual).

    Prerequisite:

    The IIS service is required for the operations of the Online system (MVX) and of XComDriver. XCOMDriver requires a correct configuration of the TCP port (by default, set to 80) in the properties of the default web site in the IIS console. It must be set to the same value in the properties of NEST ANALYST. This port must not be used by another server. If this is the case, reconfigure it to a different value and report this change in the NEST ANALYST settings (XCOM port for database).

    On a SP3 version of Windows XP, the installation of IIS can sometimes not be detected and lead to a block of the NEST ANALYST installation. The IIS installation is theoretically notified by creating the following key is the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3SVC

    CONTEXT

    RECOMMENDED METHOD

    If the user tries to start NEST ANALYST while the set-up of the different components is not finished further to a reboot, the following errors will occur. In this case, and if no dysfunction is known on the station, one usually just needs to wait or the end of the initialisation process and to restart NEST ANALYST. The initialisation process can be followed up in Windows Task Manager:

    ORA-01033 occurs if the memory used by the Oracle process is smaller than 60 000 KB. ORA-12514 occurs if the memory used by the Oracle process ranges from 60 000 KB to 175 000 KB.

    Editing reports and problems relative to the use of software PDF995

    The NEST ANALYST software can be used to create reports in PDF (Acrobat Reader), RTF (Rich Text Format, Word compatible) or HTML formats, providing information on the health state of the machines, as well as on the monitoring modes of each machine. This tool allows for the quick creation of follow-up or status archiving folders. Its use is based on the current selection in the Asset hierarchy tree structure and complies with a list of options defined by the user. PRE-REQUISITES The editing of reports relies on the use of the Pdf995 PDF conversion software. To use it, the following

    conditions must be fulfilled:

    Pdf995 must be installed in the NEST ANALYST installation folder (by default: C:\OneProd\XPR\)

    The temporary folder for report editing must be located in: C:\OneProd\XPR \CLI\CACHE\REPORTS

    The Microsoft Loopback Adapter must be active and connected (see installation procedure for the loopback adapter). Another network can also be appropriate.

    The use of the Pdf995 driver must be preferably set to “N” in the NEST ANALYST user’s preferences (management of file size).

    The user must have full control of the files contained in folder C:\OneProd\XPR\cli_reports

    Simple file sharing must be disabled.

    Adobe Acrobat Reader must be correctly installed on the station to use the PDF format.

    Word must be correctly installed on the station to use RTF and HTML formats.

    A default printer (other than the pdf995 printer) must be declared.

    The pdf995 printer must be declared (linked to the installation of pdf995)

    The PATH environment variable must be valid (see problems relative to PATH)

    Start editing a report. A “Reports background Engine” task remains active in the task bar.

    Open the Reports background Engine window and click on “Display log” in the Action menu. The event log is a useful diagnosis tool that can be saved, sent, etc. Remember to disable the Debug mode once all required operations are completed.

    1.1.22.Enable / Disable the use of the pdf995 driver

    The pdf995 driver allows using the PDF format encoding of the reports by pdf995. Its interest lies in the reduced size of the generated reports and in its management of multibit characters (Asian characters, etc.). In case of deactivation, an Oracle module will do this operation. It can happen that the pdf995 driver needs to be disabled. This operation is of interest in the following cases:
