Protection: Always good for moored craft.Capacity: Palermo Cala is located right in the historic centre and

Harbour Plan: Small port made up of two docks: to the East, the new dock,protected on the E by the main breakwater and on the W bythe lee pier, which divides it from the old dock. The new dockis used by pleasure boaters and is equipped with floatingwharves. The old dock is used by fishing vessels.

Statistics:Water surface area: 47.000 m2


Total quay length: 400 mTotal outer breakwater length: 400 mTotal wharf length: 70 mQuay height: 1,50 mAverage Depth: 2,00 m

Protection: Modest against north-westerly Mistral; negligible for mooringsagainstwinds from quadrants II and III.

Capacity: Around 80 berths. Hazards: Shallow waters along the W shore. One-metre sandbank

located five metres W of the floating wharf. Maximum per-mitted draught of two meters.

Protection: Modest shelter from northerly Tramontana; southerly Siroccoblows as a side wind.

Capacity: Around 150 berths.Hazards: None.

Protection: Pretty good against breakers from SW to NW in the outerport; transverse wave-motion from NE and SE.

Capacity: Around 800 berths on floating wharves, of which around 80are reserved forshort-stay pleasure boaters.

Harbour plan: A single dock for various uses. The pleasure-boat area hasrecently been equipped with a system of floating wharvesprotected by a floating reinforced-concrete breakwater.



Protection: Good when the winds blow from quadrant IV, and limitedto the most sheltered area when it is blowing from quad-rant I.

Capacity: Around 140 berths.Hazards: The port is exposed to winds from quadrants I and II. To

the SSW of Gamba di Donna point, there is a 6m sand-bank. About 500m NNW of the same point, there is anoth-er rocky bank with waters as shallow as 8m. Extremelybusy in the summer with hydrofoil sand ships bound for theAeolian Islands.

Harbour plan: Pier pointing NNE, with a quay running along its length,and quayside on the shore, at the base of the same pier.




Protection: Good against breakers from quadrant IV; the ENE Greco -Levante blows as a side wind.

Capacity: Around 90 berths.Hazards: There is a semi-submerged wreck towards the middle of

the pier. Approach subject to significant sand accumula-tion. Mooring prohibited within 30m of the head of the pier,as this is reserved for the hydrofoil to the Aeolian islands.

Harbour plan: Artificial Y-shaped structure emerging from a little island onwhich a small church stands. The island is connected toshore by a causeway suitable for vehicles. There are twodocks: one to the N, mostly used by fishing boats, and oneto the S for hydrofoil.

Statistics: Water surface area: 10.000 m2 (500 for pleasure boating)Land surface area: 5.000 m2


Protection: Pretty good in the S dock, which only suffers difficult condi-tions when the southerly Sirocco blows; scarce in the Ndock, which is exposed to breakers from Quadrant I.

Capacity: Around 10 berths.Hazards: The southerly Sirocco causes strong backwash and undertow.

Harbour plan: Small port made up of a single dock, protected by an outerbreakwater with a quay running along its inside. There isalso a quayside on the shore.



Protection: Good against north-easterly Greco, progressively lesseffective as the incoming weather rotates clockwise until itis highly exposed to the southerly Auster and south-west-erly Libeccio.

Capacity: Around 40 berths.Hazards: Strong winds from the SE cause backwash and undertow.

Night-time approach difficult due to the presence of numer-ous buoys which obstruct the W part of the port basin.

SALINA - DARSENA TURISTICA


Location: 38°33’, 18 N; 14°52’, 46 EComune di Santa Marina Salina

Harbour plan: Dock constructed within an outer seawall with a quay run-ning along its inside. There is a slipway, quayside andwharves. Good equipment.




Protection: Good in all conditions.Capacity: Currently around 130 berths, 300 when work completed.Hazards: None.

Harbour plan: Marina within the port of Riposto, protected by a long outerbreakwater, located between a commercial zone and afishing zone. There are two pleasure-boating docks: one iscurrently in operation, the other is in the finalstages of construction.

Statistics: Water surface area: 268.000 m2 (108.000 for pleasure boating)Land surface area: 134.000 m2 (63.500 for pleasure boating)Total quay length: 4.060 m (1.820 for pleasure boating)Total outer breakwater length: 1.250 mTotal wharf length: 1.680 m (1.400 for pleasure boating)Quay height: 1,50 mAverage Depth: 5,00 m

Protection: Modest shelter against breakers coming in from the N orW. Exposed to southerly Sirocco and ENE Greco-Levanteside winds.

Harbour plan: The main port structures are: two quaysides separated bya wharf, Piazzale Zanagora, which faces WSW along theshoreline of the island of Ortygia. A small port, MarinaYachting, is located in the area bordering the canal whichseparates Ortygia from the mainland. There are numerousfloating wharves here.



Protection: Good shelter against winds blowing from quadrants III andIV; exposed to north-easterly Grecale and southerlySirocco.

Capacity: Around 280 berths. Around 100 on the Foro Italico quay,180 at Marina Yachting.

Hazards: S of the entrance configuration there is a sandbank, knownas the Secca Galera: the port is subject to the accumula-tion of silt brought up by the Anapo river. The seabed isbad holding ground almost everywhere, especially in thecentre-west zone of the bay.

Hazards: Shallow waters at the port entrance and in the immediatevicinity of the quayside; no light signals on the new outerbreakwater to the SE of the entrance. Subject to silt accu-mulation.

Between these two breakwa-ters there are two piers which enclose the central dock.Here there are quays on the N and E sides.

Capacity: Around 100 shallow-draught berths on the quay betweenthe Madonna and Sanità piers. Boats with draughts over 3metres moor on the first section of the Cala Palma quay oranchor at Cala Guitgia.

Hazards: Mooring unsustainable when the south-westerly Libecciois blowing.

MAZARA DEL VALLO - A.DI.NA.


Location: 37°38’,56 N; 12°35’,22 EComune di Mazara del Vallo

Harbour plan: The port system includes: the new port, at the mouth of theMazàro river, and the canal port, on the last stretch of theriver, which has quays running along both sides. All this isprotected to the W by the west pier, where the quay onlyruns along the pier’s first section, and to the E by thedefensive breakwater, built on the Palamito sandbank.Emerging at right angles from the west pier stand two morepiers equipped with quays. The tourist dock is made up offloating wharves located on the east curvilinear breakwa-ter, on the right as one enters the port.




Protection: Transverse breakers come in from the SSE and SSW.Shelter is provided against the southerly Sirocco andnorth-easterly Grecale.

Capacity: Around 125 berths.Hazards: Palamito sandbank on the right-hand side of the port, in

the zone facing the defensive breakwater. Port subject tothe “Marrobbio”, a sharp variation in water level from a fewcentimetres to over a metre; the phenomenon does not lastmore than two hours and is rare, especially in summer.Shallow waters in the canal port, where there are also tworoad bridges which prevent craft with superstructures overtwo metres tall from passing.

Capacity: Around 200 berths, 180 in the Club Nautico Lilybeo.Hazards: When the southerly Sirocco is blowing it is advisable only

to moor in the tourist dock. Sandbanks around the Floriopier and the “Banchina dei Mille” quay. Port subject to the“Marrobbio” phenomenon, a sharp variation in water levelfrom a few centimetres to over a metre. The phenomenondoes not last more than two hours and is rare, especially insummer.

Harbour plan: The port includes an outer port; a cargo port formed by aninlet, the major axis of which points W-E, where the sidesare almost entirely equipped with quays; a fishing port tothe W of the cargo port, with quays on the E, N and Wsides; a tourist dock formed by a breakwater running par-allel to the coast which protects the various floatingwharves.



Protection: Wave-motion penetrates when the southerly Sirocco andnorth-westerly Mistral are blowing. Provides shelteragainst breakers coming in from quadrants I and IV.

Capacity: Around 200 berths.Hazards: Shallow waters extend for 1.5 m from the port entrance

towards the S, starting from the green signal light at theentrance. Winds from the S cause strong backwash andundertow.

ISOLA DI FAVIGNANA - CALA PRINCIPALE

Harbour plan: Circular cove open to the N and NNW. On the E side themain breakwater extends towards the NW. There is a quayrunning along its length. Both sides of the cove are almostentirely equipped with quays, whilst towards the bottomend there is a beach. On the E side there are several piersfor commercial liners and pleasure boats.




Protection: Exposed to north-westerly Mistral side wind.Capacity: Around 100 berths.Hazards: Pay attention, when entering and leaving the port, to the

extension works underway on the main pier. In the tunafishing season pay extremely close attention to the tunanet warning signals.
