    How to Find the Campus andYour Accomodation?Vestold University College islocated at Bakkenteigen in the mu-nicipality o Horten. It is approxi-mately 15 km north o the town oTnsberg and 6 km south o Horten.Below we are sketching out someo the options you have to get towhere classes are and to where youwill be living during your studies atVestold University College.

    AirportsOslo has three dierent airports.The largest one, Oslo Gardermoen(OSL), is located approximately 50

    km north o Oslo. It is Norwayslargest airport and has the mostinternational connections. To get toBakkenteigen campus rom Garder-moen, the easiest way is to take thetrain to Tnsberg rom the bottomoor o the airport (approximately atwo hour ride) and go on rom there

    by bus.

    The second one, and the one near-est to Bakkenteigen, is Sandeord

    Torp Airport (TRF). From Torp youcan take the train to Tnsberg (17minutes ride) and take the bus romTnsberg to Bakkenteigen.

    Our third Oslo airport is located inRygge in the county o stold. Youmay take the local train or a shuttlebus rom Rygge to Moss and go byerry to Horten rom there. FromHorten, you may also take the busV-01 or V-02 to Bakkenteigen.

    Student ID CardAll students should have a studentID card. Student ID cards are issuedon the Orientation Day. You must

    pay the semester ee and registeror the semester beore you mayreceive the card.. Note: all exchangestudents are exempted rom pay-ing the semester ee, but they mustbe registered.

    For degree-seeking internationalstudents: when the ee is paid youbring your receipt and a valid iden-tication with a photo (passport,bank card or drivers licence) to theStudent Service Center(Hgskoletorget) and you will get asticker on your student ID card. You

    will nd the invoice or the ees onStudent Web (accessible ater youhave registered).

    Monthly RentThere are a ew things that youshould be aware o about the pay-ment: The rent must be paid the 15th

    o every month. You must pay or hal o the

    month in advance. Invoices aresent to every tenant.

    You can either pay the invoicesby transerring money romyour bank account, or pay withyour credit/debit card, or incash at the Housing Ofce.

    The rst rent has to be paidbeore arrival or in cash whenyou collect the key.

    Moving Out Earlier than Agreed?Remember, there is two monthsnotice.

    Coping with HousematesIt is always a challenge trying toadapt to new housemates, but itmight even be harder when you arerom dierent cultures, so here area ew things to think about:Do your dishes every day, clean thecooker ater you have used it. Makesure that the toilet is clean. Cleanthe apartment once a week (usinghot water and soap). Whether it is

    cleaning supplies, toilet paper, ood,kitchenware etc, always ask i youmay borrow other studentsproperty.

    Residence Permit - Registrationat the Police OfceAll international students, with theexception o students rom EU/EEAcountries staying in Norway or lessthan three months, and studentsrom the Nordic countries, mustreport to the at the local police stationwithin 7 days o arrivalin Norway.

    All ERASMUS students or studentsrom EEA must have a valid pass-port or the duration o their stay.

    EEA/EU nationals no longer needto apply or residence permits inNorway. It is sufcient that theyregister on the web site: udi.no andregister at the local police station atleast within a week ater arrival.

    All other studentsmust bring theirpassport (visa is already granted)and report your address in Norway.In this pamphlet your will ndmaps o both Horten and Tnsbergindicating where the police stationsand the population ofces/registrars are located.

    Norwegian Social SecurityNumberAter registration at the policestation, students residing in Nor-

    way or six months or more mustapply or a Norwegian social secu-rity number.This is issued by the NationalPopulation Register. You have tohave this number in order to get abank account in Norway. Erasmus/ISEP exchange students stayingless than 6 months in Norway do

    not have to apply or social securitynumber at the National PopulationRegister.

    Working in Norway

    As a student you are normallygranted a part-time work permitwith the rst time-residence per-mit. This permit allows you to workup to 20 hours per week, andulltime employment duringordinary holidays. When applyingor a renewal o the student permityou need to enclose a statement

    rom your educational provider thatthe work is not considered to inter-ere with your studies.

    Career Services at VUCThe Career Services at VUC helps

    students to nd a job during andater their studies at VUC. Thisofce assists students throughoutthe job search process. The CareerServices ofce is located on thebottom oor on Campus Bakkentei-gen together with the InternationalRelations Ofce. Please note that itis quite difcult to nd a part-time

    job in Norway unless you can speakNorwegian.

    Health, Medical aid and InsuranceIt is the students own responsibili-ty to make insurance arrangementsor any accident, illness, injury, lossor damage to persons or propertyresulting rom, or in any way

    connected with, the study period inNorway.

    General travel, luggage and accidentinsurance is recommended duringyour stay in Norway.

    Health Insurance and Health CareStudents rom EU/EEA countriesmust have social security cover-age rom their home country. Theymust obtain the European HealthInsurance Card entitling them to

    medical treatment in accordancewith the Norwegian National Insur-ance Scheme. For urther inorma-tion about the card please contactthe nearest insurance ofce in yourhome country.

    Voluntary Enrolment in theNorwegian Health SchemeInternational students rom otherparts o the world may apply orvoluntary enrolment in theNorwegian National Health Schemeater arrival. Fill out and send in theorms you will nd at

    www.nav.no.I you intend to study in Norwaymore than 12 months, you mayenrol at the beginning o your stay.

    Note: Services such as dental careare not covered in the insurancescheme so we recommend you buy

    an accident coverage in your insur-ance.

    The Personal Doctor System

    (Fastlegeordningen) gives all resi-dents o Norway the right to haveone specic doctor as their personaldoctor. I you are staying or morethan 6 months, it is important thatthe International Relations Ofce re-ceives your social security numberin order to register you in the per-sonal doctor system. You will thenbe assigned one. For students whoare spending less than six monthsin Norway, the easiest way to seea doctor will be to call the Emer-gency clinic between the hours o

    2 pm and 8 am Monday-Friday, orSat-Sun all day/night. There is nospecial health centre or studentsat Vestold University College. TheEuropean Health Insurance Cardand/or the student card should bepresented at each consultation.You should note that the insuranceis limited to the cost within thepublic insurance scheme and willnot cover additional expenses orthe private doctors/clinics that arenot attached to this scheme. For allcategories o students the insur-ance covers regular medical consul-

    tations, except or a nominal ee tobe paid by the patient. It also covershospitalization in Norway. Notethat the Norwegian National HealthScheme will not be valid when trav-elling outside Norway, so you needto buy a regular travel insurancewhen travelling outside Norway.

    ISEP exchange students: the cover-age provided by ISEPs Health Insur-ance Scheme covers the medicalinsurance needs while in Norway.

    TuberculosisAll persons rom a country with ahigh risk o tuberculosis who willbe residing in Norway or more

    than 3 months are required to takea tuberculosis control at the localhealth centre immediately upon ar-rival in Norway. No charge is madeor these tests. This also applies topersons returning rom a stay omore than 3 months in a countrywith a high risk o tuberculosis.The control consists o a tuberculin(skin) test (Mantoux Test) by the lo-cal health ofce and an X-ray o thelungs by a national hospital. Aterthe registration at the aliens ofcethe police will notiy the municipal

    doctor and you will receive a letterwith the time and date or yourtuberculosis test. Note: The timingo the two parts o the MantouxTest is crucial - rst the test and72 hours later the results must bemeasured. Persons rom WesternEurope and certain other countrieswith declared tuberculosis statusdo not normally need to take atuberculosis test. Documentationrequired by students: Travel document with valid

    Dental CareContact the Inormation desk at SIVor a list o available dentists.

    MRSA Test - or Students atthe Faculty o Health SciencesAll students doing clinical practicemust take an MRSA test. You canhave it taken prior to leaving yourhome country, but then you mustnot enter a hospital again ater be-ing tested. Results must be axedto the Faculty o Health here at thecollege. You can otherwise take thetest immediately upon arrival inNorway (between Monday - Fri-day). As it takes two days to receivethe results, you will not be allowedto begin your clinical work beorereceiving a negative result.

    Students with Special NeedsVUC has a well-dened policy andwritten and practiced routinesregarding students with specialneeds such as dyslexia or hearingimpairment. I there are specialneeds students coming to VUCthey will be identied at the appli-cation stage and VUC has an ampletime to prepare or the arrival osuch students.     Credit System and Grading Scale

    Courses are measured in studi-epoeng corresponding to the ECTSstandard. Grades or undergraduateand postgraduate examinations areawarded according to a graded scalerom A (highest) to F (ail), with Eas the minimum pass grade. A pass/ail mark is given or some

    examinations.Teaching and ExaminationTeaching is carried out in variousorms, such as lectures, seminars,group work, laboratory work andindependent studies. The teachingemphasizes the students responsi-bility and individual perormance,

    and the grades obtained generallyreect the entire participation inthe course, not only the nalexamination. See the rules andregulations governing examina-tions at www.hive.no.

    Academic CultureNorwegian students enjoy a great

    deal o reedom in their studies. Theemphasis on independent studyand individual planning does, how-ever, place a considerable responsi-bility on the individual to organiseand plan his/her time. The relationbetween students and teachers canbe described as inormal. Studentsdo not use their teachers titles,and they are also encouraged toask questions both in and out othe classroom, as well as commenton things they disagree with. Thedress code is inormal.

    Norwegian Language CourseVestold University College oers aNorwegian course each semester,ree o tuition ee, depending onthe demand. We strongly recom-mend you to attend this course. Youmay also do sel-study courses ontape, video and Norwegianprogrammes on Television. A Ling-uaphone course Bridges to Norwayis available at our library.

    Reund o Health Care ExpensesYou may get some o your healthcare expenses rom dentists, doc-tors, psychologist, physiotherapistsor chiropractors reunded by SIV.Contact SIV to get application ormsand terms.

    The Student Society(Studentsamunnet) organizesmost o the sports and social activi-ties or students. There is a widevariety o activities and organisa-tions at the college where studentscan meet. The sports activities varyrom soccer, volleyball, handball,mountain climbing to swimming

    and so on. Since the studentsorganize these activities, thereare variations rom year to year.The student society also organ-izes a student disco (Student Kro)every other Thursday at a discoin Tnsberg. These gatheringsare very popular among the Nor-wegian students and it is a great

    opportunity to meet ellow stu-dents. International students are,o course, welcome to take part inthe many social or sports activities.A membership costs NOK 300, - ayear or NOK 150, - or a semester.The membership gives discountsto concerts and student discos aswell as good deals in dierent shopsin Horten and Tnsberg.     Bus CardThere is a small ee or the elec-tronic card. This card can be boughtat Narvesen kiosk at SjsidenShopping Center in Horten or atFarmandstredet Shopping Center in

    Tnsberg. The card is valid on all lo-cal busses in Vestold. You can buy arell on the bus every month.

    It is expected that you return thebicycle in the same condition thatyou got it.

    BankingExchange students staying longerthan 6 months: in order to get abank account in Norway, you needa social security number. Ater youhave received your social securitynumber rom the authorities, youcan go to a bank o your choice toopen an account.

    Students staying in Norway lessthan 6 months are not eligible ora social security number. I youneed a bank account, ask the bankto apply or a "D - number" on yourbehal, a simplied version o thesocial security number. It takes upto our weeks to receive this D -number. For students staying or 3to 6 months it might be just as wellto use your Visa/Credit card romyour bank at home.

    There is an ATM machine or cashwithdrawal on Campus Bakkenteigen.

    Mobile PhonesI you bring your own mobile phonewith you, it is cheaper to get a Nor-wegian SIM card and buy prepaidcards. However, i your phone islocked to a mobile phone companyin your home country, you mustcontact them to unlock your phone

    beore you buy a Norwegian SIMcard.

    You can buy prepaid cards at gasstations, in most grocery shops,kiosks and in shops selling mobilephones and other electronic equip-ment. At the latter you can also buya SIM card.

    Travel DiscountsIn most cases students are entitledto reduced airs at domestic ightswith airlines, boats, erries and theNorwegian State Railway (NSB),provided they have a valid StudentIdentity Card. For discounts oninternational ights, specialdiscount cards should be obtainedrom Kilroy Travels.
