El Plan de Competitividad T Guadiana Internacional se marca como objetivo que urstica el lector de este cuaderno descubra algunos de los rincones ms hermosos de las comarcas de Olivenza y Lcara-Los Baldios siguiendo las aves para su observacin y/o fotografa, aunque el visitante no sea un gran aficionado a las aves. Para incitar a tal ejercicio proponemos el presente paseo didctico/informativo por esta parte fronteriza entre Extremadura y Portugal teniendo al gran ro Guadiana como referente en todo momento. Aves ms destacadas, principales reas protegidas, IBAs, rutas ornitolgicas, miradores, observatorios, etc son resaltados aqu para que este territorio enamore a todo aquel que se acerque a conocerlo.Pequea rapaz residente comn catalogada como vulnerable en Extremadura. Presenta uno de sus mejores cuarteles en los Llanos del entorno de Olivenza. T Guadiana-Internacional T Competitiveness Plan aims the reader of this booklet he ourism to help discover some of the most beautiful corners of this region, fol owing birds by observation and / or photography, even though the reader may not yet be a great enthusiast of birds. T encourage such an interest, we suggest this didactic tour along the border line between Extremadura o and Portugal using the River Guadiana as a reference, at all times. T most important Birds, the major he Protected Areas, IBAs*, Ornithological routes, Viewpoints, Observatories, etc are highlighted here, so that anyone who visits, falls in love instantly with all that there is to see. 3

Acercndose a las aves/ Getting in T with Birds ouchUna de las mejores maneras de disfrutar de la naturaleza es a travs de la observacin de las aves. Para conseguir plena satisfaccin en esta tarea hacen falta una serie de ingredientes que gustosamente desvelaremos en este cuaderno. El elemento estrella para cocinar esta receta es tener aficin por las aves, o al menos curiosidad por acercarse a ellas, solo o en compaa de personas que desborden pasin por estos animales, como los guas ornitolgicos, los voluntarios de asociaciones conservacionistas o simplemente algn amigo pajarero. Una vez el ingrediente principal est conseguido debemos ir mejorando el plato con el condimento que proporciona los conocimientos necesarios para disfrutar ampliamente de esta aficin, sobre los Espacios Naturales ms atractivos de cada territorio y sobre rutas, observatorios y miradores de los lugares donde vayamos a practicar este bello y sano ejercicio. T main object of this recipe, is to have a love he for birds or at least the curiosity in getting closer up to them, alone, or in company of people who have an overflowing passion for these animals, such as the Ornithological Guides, Volunteers of a Conservation Association, or just a birder friend . When the main ingredient is found, you should go about improving the recipe with little titbits of knowledge, along with the kinds of important tools that you wil need to ful y enjoy this hobby. Existe un predominio de hbitats de caractersticas abiertas que facilitan mucho la observacin de las aves, como las zonas pseudoesteparias de la imagen, los grandes y medianos embalses, las dehesas, las zonas de cultivos, etc. Esta caracterstica, unida al nmero elevado de especies y de individuos de cada especie, hace que practicar esta aficin en este territorio extremeo sea sencil o y atractivo en cualquier poca del ao. Especies residentes, invernantes, estivales y en los pasos migratorios sern objetivo de nuestras pticas, nuestras guas y nuestros cuadernos de campos ayudados de los observatorios, miradores, rutas, etc. In the centre is a picturesque image of the Llanos de Olivenza, an example of where we can see an area ful of a variety of species and remarkable places, where there exists an enourmous predominance of habitats with wide open characteristics, that make very easy the observation of birds such as the pseudoesteparia areas in the photo, the large and medium size reservoirs, the Dehesas, the crop areas, etc. T feature coupled with a high his number of species, and individuals of each species, make it very easy to carry out this hobby in this part of Extremadura, very simple yet very attractive, all the year round. T resident species, the winter he visitors, the summer time visitors and all their migration paths, wil be the focus of attention of all our lenses, our guides and our field notebooks, helped by observatories, lookouts, routes, etc.. 5

Aquellos que empiecen en este mundo del Birding deben tener en cuenta las 5 pistas bsicas que debemos seguir para adivinar de qu animal se trata : 1.- La silueta del Ave (forma y tamao) 2.- Su plumaje y coloracin 3.- Sus hbitat preferentes 4.- Su comportamiento 5.- Sus cantos Adems de conocer algo sobre las aves hay que considerar que estamos ante un territorio con gran variedad de especies dentro de este grupo faunstico, debido a la enorme diversidad de ecosistemas presentes, como humedales, roquedos, dehesas, bosque y matorral mediterrneo, zonas de regados, cultivos de cereales y pastos o zonas urbanas. Hecho que a su vez se ve reflejado en el gran nmero de espacios de inters para las aves (protegidos o no) tales como ZEPAs (Zonas de Especial Proteccin para las Aves) y LICs (Lugares de Importancia Comunitaria) dentro de la RED Natura 2000, IBAs (Important Bird Areas) e incluso un Humedal RAMSAR. T esto se deriva de la presencia de buena parte de las especies de aves visibles en odo Extremadura, en algunos casos con un nmero notables de ejemplares.

Its Song In addition to knowing something about birds we have to consider that we are confronted by a large territory ful of a great variety of species within this faunistic group, due mainly to the enormous diversity of these ecosystems including the wetlands, rocky outcrops, dehesas*, forests and Mediterranean scrub, areas of irrigation, cereal crops, pastures and urban areas. T fact is, its presence is reflected in he the many areas interesting for birds (protected or not) such as SPAs (Special Protection Areas for Birds) and SCIs (Sites of Community Importance) within the Natura 2000 Network , also IBAs (Important Bird Areas) and even a RAMSAR wetland. All this makes upfor the existence of many of the bird species that we can find in Extremadura, in some cases with a significantly high number count.

Dehesas/Dehesas

T typical landscape of Extremadura together with the wide span of the T torio Guadiana-Internacional, originally he erri woodlands, cleared and created by man, we find birds like the Hoopoe or Azure-winged Magpie, .... But not only in the Spring time is it impressive, but also in the winter, with the arrival of the Common Crane and other wintering visitors, the Dehesa* is the perfect habitat. Amongst the Birds of Prey looking for a great nesting area, we find the Black-shouldered Kite, the Black Kite and the Booted Eagle and as a prized feeding area, the Imperial Eagle, the Bonellis Eagle and various types of Vulture that we have in Extremadura. Important areas of the Dehesa* are the SPA areas known as the Dehesa de Jerez
