10. GETTING AROUND
With a surface area of 181.7 sq. km, the Borough of Gijón is situated practically in the centre of the Asturian coastline, bordered by the boroughs of Carreño, Llanera, Siero, Sariego and Villaviciosa, between 43º 2'' 30" and 43º 34'' 18" latitude North and 1º 52'' 29" and 2º 8'' 0" longitude West of the meridian of Madrid.
The built‐up area of the town, which extends both sides of the primitive Roman settlement on the headland of Santa Catalina, occupies an approximate surface area of 13.9 sq. km ‐which supposes 7.6% of the surface area of the Borough‐ concentrating 90% of the population, which in total adds up to approximately 280,000 inhabitants. The remaining 10% of the population is distributed over the 25 parishes of the Borough. The rural parishes of Gijón/Xixón have a double calling: on the one hand industrial, those which have been absorbed into the outskirts of the metropolis and the large industrial facilities that are located in the western quarter of the borough, such as Fresno, Granda, Jove/Xove, Poago, Porceyo, Roces, San Andrés de los Tacones, Tremañes, Vega and Veriña.
ATHLETES’ AND TEAM OFFICIALS’ GUIDE Page 21 of 38
The countryside is characterised by an absolute predominance of meadowlands, above all in the central part of the borough. Patches of forests dominate at its boundaries, coinciding with hillier terrain. Inland, it presents a layout in the shape of an amphitheatre whose outer limits reach heights ranging between the 200 m of Mount Areo and the 500‐600 m of the Pico San Martin (St. Martin's Peak) and the Peña de los Cuatro Jueces (Peak of the Four Judges). The river network, relatively dense though of short courses, is basically arranged around two river valleys: that of Piles‐Peña Francia and that of Aboño‐Pinzales.
ATHLETES’ AND TEAM OFFICIALS’ GUIDE Page 22 of 38
Included, like the rest of the region, in the domain of Atlantic Spain, the Borough of Gijón shares its general climatological characteristics, though with slight nuances due to its coastal situation and the peculiarities of its relief. The climate of Gijón may be defined, in this sense, as being temperate, with an average annual temperature of 15º and slightly varying annual average maximum and minimum temperatures. Rainfall ranges between 800‐1,000 mm/year, fairly regularly distributed, with the absence of very dry periods and the non‐existence of heavy concentrations of rainfall at specific times of the year. Both variables, temperature and rainfall, are slightly modified at the south eastern border of the Borough, where the highest altitudes are to be found: the temperatures decrease and the rainfall increases. History The impetuous Bay of Biscay (or Cantabrian Sea as it is known locally), which embraces the city of Gijón, has marked its history for over 5,000 years. Seaport to the Ruta de la Plata, Gijón keeps its Roman past alive through the actions taken in the Campa de Torres Archaeological Site, one of the main fortified settlements of the north of Spain (before 490 B.C.), and especially in the restored baths complex at Campo Valdés, a public building which dates from the end of the 1st century A.D. The territory was occupied continuously during the Middle Ages, proof of which are the Romanesque churches dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. The founding of the Puebla (Village) in 1270 implied an urban expansion that was to come to a standstill at the end of the 14th century, when Gijón became the stage for the Trastámara conflicts, during which the town was almost completely destroyed. In the 18th century, the erudite Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos laid out the plans for the development of Gijón. The process of industrialisation begun in the mid‐19th century changed the city into the industrial center of Asturias, with its leading El Musel Port, shipyards and numerous manufacturing installations. The progressive modernization of the city, along with its own excellent natural conditions, has turned Gijón into a city that attracts a growing number of visitors, drawn by a good offer of culture and sports and a strong service sector. Now, at the beginning of a new century, Gijón is doing its utmost to preserve its remote historical past and to display this as an example of its touristic excellence.
