Dear Eugene:

(1) Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT I below) in response to my list distribution of the Reference (a) above.

It was my great pleasure to have met with you at the Content and Communications World (CCW)/SATCON convention at the Javitz Center on November 14th.

(2) As mentioned to you at that time, I would like to explore the possibility of cooperation among Victor’s “Africa Coast to Europe (ACE)” (5 tera bps) broadband Internet submarine cable (US$700 million) and Greg’s GLORIAD (10 gbps broadband Internet — about US$260 million — see ATTACHMENT II below) and your Lightower Fiber Network (100 Gbps).

This map should be revised since GLORIAD is now being extended to South Africa through ACE of Baharicom — see Figure 3 above.

This is really amazing, since when I initiated the globalization of Internet (References (b) to (d) and (m) and (n) above), there were only a dozen or so universities hocked to the original packet-switching data telecom network;

BTW, Greg kindly says that his GLORIAD started at the 1994 Global Lecture Hall (GLH), which was held at his University of Tennessee in Knoxville (UTK) (Reference (e) above).

(3) Greg Cole will make his presentation about his GLORIAD in the evening of December 19th (Wednesday) at the Faculty House of Columbia University (Reference (f) above).

The dinner will start at 6:00 pm at $25.00.  If you want to have it there, pls inform to Jerry Spivack — see his email address above — he is now arranging Greg’s travel etc..  Greg’s talk will start around 7:15 pm at the Faculty House.  I strongly suggest to attend his seminar.

This occasion is under the auspices of the “Knowledge, Technology and Social System” seminar of the Columbia University, for which I am the co-chairman.

Dear Eugene and Greg:

(4) I would like to have a private mtg with you at the lobby of the Quarter Club at 40 West 45th Street, which is located just behind the front desk which telephone is 212-626-9222 — say, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm of December 20th — we can have a lunch there, too.

Eugene, you may describe your Lightower Fiber Network to Greg in details. I was glad to hear at the Javitz Center on November 14th of your possibility of signing MOU with Greg of GLORIAD (and later with Victor of Baharicom) -- as I arranged for the later two (Reference (k) above). At this mtg, you can discuss about this further — sorry to say that Victor cannot make this mtg since he will be in Mozambique on that day.

Greg and Eugene, pls let me know if you both can make this mtg.

Looking forward to receiving your prompt response,

Best, Tak

GLORIAD:  Supporting the Globalization of Science and Education with an

Advanced, Optical Network Encircling the Northern Hemisphere

Building on early efforts by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) in extending the Internet globally in the 1980s and 1990s, the Global Ring Network for Advanced Applications Development (GLORIAD - http://www.gloriad.org/) has been funded by the NSF ($20M) and government science ministries and private sector partners around the world ($240M) since 1997.  It provides high-speed, dedicated communications services for science, education and health research between communities globally (and connecting with nearly all US universities and federally-funded research facilities) - providing end-user capacities up to 1000 times that commonly available over today's commodity Internet - and to an end-user community numbering in the

millions.

GLORIAD's evolution will be briefly described (since it's early work connecting US with Russia and China in the late 1990s) - with a focus on core principles, architecture, services, public/private partners and future plans.  Special attention will be placed on how the advanced network is used to support science and education collaboration - from high energy physics, atmospheric science and climate change, health research to modern genomics research (and hundreds of other disciplines).   The talk will also describe recent work with partners in India, Singapore and Egypt in extending the partnership, connections and shared infrastructure within the Gulf region, in Southeast Asia and across the African continent.  Some discussion will be made about GLORIAD's decentralized model of operations and governance - and the case made for how this best serves the purpose of fostering continuous, flexible, community-driven innovation required for modern science infrastructure supporting collaboration globally.
