The story is about a woman named Anna,

from Philadelphia, who loved her mother very

much. So after her mother had died, she wanted to find a way to express her love for her mother, and also expected others to say “ thank you” or “ I love you” more to their mothers, while they were alive. In 1907, Anna and her supporters (支持者) began to write to churches, businessmen, and politicians( 政治家 ) for a national Mother's Day. It was successful at last. By 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. In 1914, President Wilson, made Mother's Day a national holiday. Millions of people have celebrated it with candy, cards, gifts, and flowers on the second Sunday in May every year since then.

While listening to a Mother's Day in 1909, a woman in Washington, Mrs. Dodd, first had the idea of a "Father's Day." His father took care of the five children by himself after his mother had died. He was a hero in the eyes of his daughter. He was born in June, so Mrs. Dodd chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. But President Nixon signed the law that finally made it permanent ( 永久的 ) until 1972. People celebrate it in different ways every year. Fathers often get many presents from children. They can also do whatever they want.
