Tours and Events - justforyou

Our alumni come in varying sizes, shapes and colours, have graduated from various of the University's colleges and schools, and are in an age g rou p that spans 70 years - give or take a decade 0 r two.

Their characters, their likes and dislikes, their habits, wants, needs and desi res are as varied as the very pebbles on a beach - and long may they remain that way, they're all interesting individuals.

But that individualism creates problems for committees whose aim is to plan alumni happenings that will attract the necessary complement of enthusiastic alumni.

Well, your Program Events and Alumn i Tours Committees have bravely faced up to the problems - and they've come up with some value-packed programs for you for 1978. Help yourself to some good fun by making plans now to participate.

If you've a mind for the myths, then Greece awaits you from April 16 to May 1 when you'll find yourself cruising to romantic places like Aegina, Poros and Hydra, and enjoying incredible scenery, good food, music and the fun-loving people of those sundrenched islands.

If you 've a yen for Europe and the heights of the Alps then it's off with you to Yugoslavia and Austria from September 4 to 19. You'll visit the cities of Belgrade, Salzburg and Vienna , and travel through the Danube River Valley to the setting where "The Sound of Music" was filmed.

If you're looking for a holiday that's really different then sign up for the Alumni Tou r to Colombia and Ecuador and go to Cartegena, a new place, not yet a tourist mecca, on Colombia's Costa del Caribe.

Then there are the closer-to-home events.

A brand -new happening for the alumni who enjoy skiing and winter outings, an Alumni Winter Carnival will take place at Deerhurst Lodge near Huntsville. Reserve February 24 to 26 to enjoy the down-hill slopes, the cross-country trails, the relaxation of sizzling saunas, coddling whirlpool baths, and the gathering of friends around a huge crackling stone fireplace.

~-- ~================~~E~•"

Don 't miss an outing to the University of Guelph Arboretum come Green ThumbDaySunday May 29. It 's being planned as a fun day forthe whole family - out in the fresh air.

Another fresh ai r event will be the Alumni Fly-In on June 11. The rendezvous field has yet to be selected so watch your mail for more details on th is one.

A return to the alma mater for Alumni Weekend, July 14 to 16, is a must. One of the major events of the weekend will be the official opening of the Mac/ FACS Alumni Association's 75th Anniversary Project, the renovated lounge complex at Macdonald Institute. Continuing Education will again be offering its Family Summer Campus program the week before and the week following Alumni Weekend. Bring the whole family and treat them to a rare educational experience you'll all enjoy.

Another first, an Alumni Colour Tour will whisk you off on September 30 for visits to apple growers and processors. You'll taste their ciders, visit antique shops and enjoy the colourful autumn countryside along the route.

And, of course, many will return to the University for Homecoming on October 14th to take part in the activities, be it the football game, class reunions, any of the many school Alumni Association annual meetings, or the big one - the annual dinner of the University of Guelph Alumni Association .

On October 25 you're invited to enjoy a relaxing dinner while you pit your wits against the odds during Alumni Night at the Western Fair Raceway,

As the year progresses more Alumni events will beorganizedandoffered. lntheair currently are thoughts of a Carribean cruise, a car rally , a camping weekend, a retirement seminar and lots more.

If you have any suggestions for gettogethers -let us know.

Meanwhile, this special Datel in e issue will serve to jog your memory about all the exciting alumni programs and events planned just for you . We hope you'll participate in as many as you can.

A new hang-up It's hard to believe, but one whole year has passed since we published that hanging visual and verbal link with your alma mater that's been your faithful daily reminder and recorder fo r 1977.

However, no matter how attached to it you've become, it's time to part w ith your old friend and hang this new one in its place.

With this special 1978 Dateline issue of the Guelph Alumnus comes warm and sincere seasons greetings from your University of Guelph Alumn i Association President Olive (Thompson) Thompson, Mac '35; from Director of Alumn i Affairs and Development, John K. Babcock, OAC '54, and his staff, including myself Derek J. Wing, your editor who, at this time, would liketothank all those al umni who took the time to drop a line for the letters to the editor section . I'm hop ing more will do so in 1978 - including you! Ed .
