In Celtic religion there is a God known as Cernunnous, the deity of the forest and wild animals. The stag is the physical representation of Cernunnous, and his spirit lives within all deer.

The deer – guardian of the forest – is the largest living animal in British woodlands, with no predator other than man. These herbivores, with no need to harm other living creatures, protect all animals that are smaller, and more vunerable.

The large illustration of the stag, and the ascending branch antlers, contain smaller animals featuring cedar tree tails, flower bud feet and twig legs. The layers depict the depth of the forest he guards.
