The district of Guadix y El Marquesado is a crossroads between the western Spain and Andalusia. Since prehistory it has been an obligatory route and boasts a complete road network, making it one of the region’s best-communicted districts.

The district is formed by an enormous high plateau loca ted be-tween the Sub-Baetic and Penibetic ranges, its northern limit is the Sierra de Cazorla and its southern limit is the Sie rra Nevada, which separates it from the Mediterranean Sea.

CrossroadsGrenade Guadix y El Marquesado

Only at 45 minutes away is Grenade airport. The A 92, backbone of Andalu-sia’s road network, crosses Guadix y El Marquesado from East to West and a new section of the dual carriage-way links Guadix to Huéne-ja, in the Almería direction. Neither must we forget the roads linking the district’s vil-lages or the railway, the best way to travel and enjoy the view.

T ranquil white villages, farmhouses, archae-

ological re mains, rivers, mountains, monumental towns... history and nature are intimately entwined in this land of many features, a land which captivates all who discover it. Its past, mainly Arab, is present in its wind-ing streets and of squares of large windows and balco-nies decorated with flowered geraniums. Its countryside, its people and above all, the peace which permeates each nook and cranny of Guadix y El Marquesado makes it a paradise within our reach.

In order to make your visit even more rewarding and to help you get to know this ancient land, this publication has been divided into two sec-tions. In the first section you will

find informa-tion about the district’s tourist products (herit-age, cave-hous-es, handcrafts, natural attrac-tions etc.) and in the second part various routes through its towns and beauty spots are presented.

Is formed by the city of Guadix and the villages that surround it, this area has a very rich archaeological and historical leg-

acy. Dolmens, Iberian remains, and the Roman city of Acci (Gua-dix), founded by Julius Caesar, all speak of the ancient settling of Guadix y El Marquesado, a crossroads dating from the most re-mote Antiquity.

The Muslims who came to the Peninsula in the 8th Century oc-cupied these lands for centuries. The Morisco rebellion in 1568 provoked the expulsion of the Muslim population and their sub-stitution by Christian resettlers.

Thus began a new phase in the history of Guadix y El Mar-quesado. New fi estas and celebrations were introduced and the churches and civil buildings which we can still admire in each town and village of the district were raised. The district’s Islamic heritage remained however as we can see in the Mudejar churches, agricul-tural methods, Arab placenames, etc.

Guadix y El Marquesado, with a rich monumental and ar-tistic heritage, which is enhanced by the beauty of the sur-

rounding landscapes, encloses within its ur-banistic walls a curious voyage through History. The Muslims left an in-delible legacy: castles, city walls, towers, cis-terns, baths and above all the towns with their narrow streets where time seems to have stood still since the mid-dle ages.

Guadix y Marque-sado’s two most im-portant monuments are: Guadix Cathedral

and La Calahorra castle. The cathedral, built between the 16th and and 18th Century, is a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles: the chapel of San Torcuato is the work of Diego de Siloé while outside the main façade recalls the style of Borromini.

La Calahorra Castle, in the ad-ministrative seat of the Marquesado del Zenete, houses one of the most beautiful Renai ssance palaces in Spain. Built in the early 16th Century and inspired by Italian models, its beautiful arcaded court-yard is an impressive sight.

The accommodation in caves of Guadix and El Marquesa-do, has become one of more attractive and singular tour-

ist attractions of the province of Grenade. The special geological characteristics of la Hoya de Guadix dale and the Fardes and Gor, river valleys with their easily-excavated earth have given rise to a singular type of dwelling: cave houses. We can see and ex perience these dwellings excavated in the earth, equipped with three stars acommodation comfort (te lephone, water, comfortable envi-ronment and electricity) thanks to the rural accommodation on offer in the area.

Cave dwellings have produced an at-tractive type of scenery, characterized by the contrast between the re ddish earth and the houses’ whitwashed chimneys and doorways. When you enter a cave house, you will under-stand why this way of life has lasted so long; its thermal insulation means that

the temperature remains constant throughout the year, with an aver-age of 18-20ºC.

Warm in Winter and cool in Sum-mer, rustic and welcoming, their whitewashed walls and simple forms captivate all who choose them for accommodation.

1The gastronomy of Guadix y El Mar-

quesado shows in its dishes the inheritance of the diverse cultures and populations that have inhabited it, using local products and traditional recipes which have sur-vivied the march of time. It is important to mention the virgin extra olive oil, with the Apellation of Origin “Aceite de Oliva Montes de Granada”. Stews, migas, or fried (garlic) breadcrumbs, gachas, a type of polenta, gurullos, a sun-dried pasta made of fl our, water and salt, shaped like wheat and used in rabbit and game stews, kid or lamb in persillade, marinaded partridge etc... dishes to suit every palate.

Guadix is the place to enjoy “tarbinas”, a fried bread and hon-ey-based pudding, polenta with peppers and herrings, papas a lo pobre, “paupers’” potato stew, paprika with sardines, olla de San Antón, a stew based on haricot beans and pork products, Gua-dix soup and Mozarabe-style lamb. And to round it off, tocino de cielo, a delicious egg-custard.

Other products and dishes from the district are “los sus-tentos”, a popular stew from Lanteira, Valle del Zalabí’s pork products and cured meats, its wines, bread, cakes and pastries, while Diez-ma, is reknowned for its partridges, chees-es and liqueurs.

Ancient handcraftGuadix y El Marquesado

Its ancient craftsmanship has survived thanks to its

revaluation as artistic work. The most widespread craft in Guadix y El Marquesado is pottery, a tradition that dates back to Prehistory. Esparto, chairmaking, wickerwork and wought iron are other handcrafts practised in the district, with the added value of each craftsman’s personal stamp.

The clayey Guadix, earth is the raw material for its char-acteristic pottery with native forms such as water pitchers, Accitan jars and the Guadix torus. To purchase pieces of handcrafted pottery we can visit any of the numerous

pottery stands in Purullena, where Accitan jars are made and pot-tery is thrown in the Levantine tradition can be bought. In Diezma we will fi nd esparto and plaited esparto handcrafts.

With a wide f o l k l o r e ,

there is in Guadix y el Marquesado fes-tivities, pilgrimages, traditions and curi-ous characters of the popular imagination like the Cascamorras of Guadix, declared a Festival of National Interest, celebrated on September 9.

Excitement is as-sured in the Gor bullruns, held during the celebrations in honour of San Cay-etano, or enjoy the fi estas celebrated in La Peza in honour of Our Lady del Ro-sario. Savour the at-mosphere of pilgrim-ages such as that of Our Lady Virgen de la Cabeza in Esfi liana (Valle del Zalabí), or of San Antón, celebrated in Gua-dix and in Alcudia, also in the Valle del Zalabí.

Fiestas and traditionsGrenade

In Andalusia Holy Week celebrations enjoy a long tradition. It has been celebrated in Guadix since the 16th Century; its streets, squares and other spots are an incomparable setting for the processions in a special, Baroque at-mosphere. During this time in Cortes y Grae-na the Enramao, a col-lection of branches, is hung out and a “Ju-das” is burnt, curious traditions which have been grafted onto the religious celebrations.

T he landscapes in Guadix y El Marquesado, located in the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, are of great beauty. It´s a

land characterised by its contrasting scenery: from the foothills of the Sierra Nevada to the mysterious, arid lunar landscape of the Montes Orientales, or western hills and from the reddish tones of Hoya de Guadix dale to the green valleys of the rivers that fl ow through the district.

Between Alamedilla and Guadahortuna is erected the Hacho Bridge, opened on the 22nd of March of 1898. The authors of the project were two direct pupils of the French architect Gustave Eiffel.

In Iznalloz, the Cueva del Agua of Sierra Arana is one of the most spectacular grottos and one of the best preserved in Andalusia. It is home to 23 different species of animal, some of which are unique. Within tourism in Píñar highlights a visit to the Cueva de las Ventanas, declared of cultural interest and natural monument.

To the south, near the Vega of Grenade, is Deifontes with its abundant spring of clear water.

Montejícar is the natural limit of the Grenade province with

the one of Jaén; the Parochial Church of San Andrés, of the XVI century, is raised in its particular town centre. Nearby, Guadahortuna has one of the most outstanding buildings of the architectonic patrimony of the region, the church of Santa Maria la Mayor.

Very often a frontier area,

it knew few periods of lasting peace in the times of Islamic domi-nation and finally suf-fered a whipping from the Castilian riders bil-leted in Cazorla. Both History and the beauty of the contrasting scenery are the inspi-ration for this route in which the attraction of the past combines with rural tourism. This is a land which has long been witness to the adventures of Man’s history.

Alamedilla is a good spot from which to contemplate semi-arid surroundings next to fertile lands irrigated by the Guadahortuna river.

Enjoying the delightful, impressive desert scen-ery of Pedro Martínez, dotted with farmhouses among the hills and gorg-es, we arrive in Laborci-llas which together with Moreda, constitute the borough of Morelábor; lands with a true frontier nature, as its archaeolo-gical remains testify.

The long history of Huélago and Fonelas can be seen in Prehistoric engravings and Mudejar architecture. We finish our trip in Benalúa, an obligatory route between Jaén and Almería (the Ro-man Via Augusta) which reflects its importance in the district’s history. We are now close to the A 92, the backbone of An-dalusia, which brings any point in the region within easy reach.

Villanueva de las Torres is blessed with a bounteous climate, its fertile farmlands bathed by the Fardes river and our visit is made even more rewarding by the remains of a Roman road and baths.

Passing the ruins of lon g-gone civilisations and unforgettable scenery, we reach Gorafe, with the highest concentration of dolmens in the Iberian Peninsula. It boasts a funerary complex, the quality and variety of whose archaeological re mains make it an important site, not to mention the beauty of its surroundings. There is a Megalithic Interpretation Centre.

Following the course of the river Gor, we approach the foothills of the range which bears its name and where numerous farmhou-

ses and villages dot the countryside. In Gor, our destination, it is impossible not to admire the remains of its Islamic castle walls or visit the Las Víboras beauty spot.

The stream of Gor is a natural depression located in a geographic pass very popular during the Prehistoric period,

border between the eastern tribal groups and those of the Low Andalucia that occupied this area in the V millennium b.C.

A trip back in time is assured in this route which takes us to the Sierra de Gor. Both history and nature combine in each town and in the countryside, showing us man’s imprint on his surroundings.

Our trip through History begins between the archaeological remains of Alicún de Ortega and of Dehesas de Guadix, where as well as its notable cave-houses we can also admire the impressive Cerro del Reloj hill.

We are in the Hoya de Guadix dale, completely surrounded by vari-ous mountain ranges. Here we can admire the ero ded reddish peaks crowning the fertile valleys, eternal guardians which have jealously protected these lands throughout their His-tory.

We set out from Darro which, together with Diezma, nestles in the foothills of the Sierra Arana, an ideal base for activities such as hik-ing. Towns and vi llages in the leafy valleys bathed by the various tributaries of Fardes contrast sharply with the naural ochre walls surrounding them. Passing through picture

Only 7km from Gua-dix we come cross Cortes y Graena, a borough formed by three different vil-lages si tuated in a beautiful valley, the

colour of whose vegetation displays an incredible range of tones. The most important elements of its history are the ven-erable house caves which were inabited as far back as the Muslim occupation. In nearby Purullena, set among sce nery well worth admiring, visits to the Cuesta del Ne gro archaeo-logical site and its large quarter of cave-houses are a must; while its traditional pottery is a joy to see.

Marchal reached its apo-gee in the Nasrid period, a fact refl ected by its he ritage. Among its buildings the Gallardo palace set upon the central hill is outstanding. It is important to mention the gullies of Marchal, classed as natural monument. Continuing southwards, we can see beautiful urban views of Beas de Guadix, a small village next to the river Alhama. Resuming our journey through this unforgettable scenery, we arrive in Polícar, a picturesque town of narrow streets and intimate squares overlooking a gorge, seeming to accompany its visitors in the quiet contemplation of its surroundings.

This is the area where most of the city’s monuments are to be found: the 16th-Century Archbishop’s Palace and the Renaissance Villalegre Palace lead us to the Torreón del Ferro to wer. More churches such as the 16th-Century church of San Miguel and of the church of la Magdalena, one of the oldest in Guadix, are testimo-

ny to the city’s Christian herit-age. From the nearby Mirador de la Magdale-na we can ad-mire some truly beautiful views.

The area where Guadix is located has been inhabited since Prehistory and it is one of the oldest human settle-

ments of Spain due to its condition of crossroad. The ancient city of Guadix, was a Ro man colony Iulia Gemella Acci, and later the Muslim town of Guad-Haix (Arabic for “river of life”). In the 15th Century it was the seat of the El Zagal court before being conquered by the Catholic Kings. This long, rich history can be seen in its streets, its squares and its nume rous monuments. A stroll through the Alcazaba quarter and its surroundings will delight the senses.

The colonnaded Plaza de la Constitución, square is ev-idence of the legacy of the Christian resettlers. Worthy of admiration is the 17th-Century Corregidores Balcony on the South façade of the Town Hall. We are now in the oldest part of Guadix, close to one of its most emblematic buildings: the Alcazaba. Declared a National Monument, its origins date from the Caliphate. Both a fortress and palace, its towers dominate the city and the plain.

Nestling between mansions and Huerta de los Pastores is the church of Santiago. This church was built upon the site of a for-mer mosque. Its Mudejar tower recalling its Islamic legacy com-bined Die go de Siloé’s Renaissance portico. We can also visit the church of San Torcuato before continuing to the Gate of the same name and on to the 15th-Cen tury church of San Francisco and the church of Santa Ana, built upon a the site of a mosque.

One of the bourough closest to Guadix is Valle del Za labí, which comprises three settlement of which Charches is one. It is located in the Gor foothills, next to the Sierra de Baza Na-ture Park. A great day out is to be had in Fraguara de Charches, a recreational area managed by the Enviromental Agency. If

not, we can always en-joy the town’s cuisine. Alcudia, plainly vis-ible from El Monterón peak, is also part of the borough, its past evident in its street-plan.

On the out skirts of Gua dix are a series of towns and villages we cannot afford to miss. Set between

mountain ranges from which swift rivers flow and with a great variety of scenery, their location, history and their in-habitants’ hospitality make them a must.

Walking the streets and around the vil-lages, we can see the influence of differ-ent civilizations that inhabited this land, leaving all kinds of testimony.

The district of El Marquesado, to be highlighted for its history

and for its natural beauty, divides its territory between the slopes of Si-erra Nevada and the plateau that lies at the foot of this Grenade massif. The whole of this route is through the majestic scenery of the Sie rra Nevada foothills.
