It was founded in 1551 with the aim to provide formal education to young people without re-sources. It was restored in the 18th Century with a Renaissance and early Baroque decoration that still conserves and it was transformed from the 90s into a university residence. Its church hosts the old choir of the chaplains who attend-ed the facilities, the choir of the schoolgirls and a central altarpiece representing the Virgin and Child together with the maidens and its founder, cardinal Siliceo (1545-1557). We can access from the inner patio to the so called Rectory Hall, the visits room where the relatives of the residents were welcomed when visiting them.
Although it was opened for the worship in 1718, the Jesuits were expelled two years later by Carlos III and did not recover the ownership of the temple until 1903. Now, it is the Diocesan Sanctuary of the Sacred Hearts and preserves the reliquary, the great altarpieces of the transept and the so-called trompe l’oeil of the main chapel. It is a painting framed by columns and painted in perspective repre-senting the miracle of the Descent of the Virgin to impose a chasuble on Saint Ildefonso.
Built as a great catafalque or royal sepulcher by the order of the Catholic Monarchs, it was ceded to the Franciscan friars when the monarchs decided to be buried in Granada. With the disentailments of the 19th Century, the friars were expelled and the primitive temple was demolished. But, after an integral restoration at the end of the 19th Century, the monastery was recovered maintaining the orig-inal Gothic style and its Mudejar influences.

Dated in 999 as a Muslim oratory and later used as a Christian hermitage, it remained hidden for centuries until it was found again and restored in the 19th Century. It is known as the hermitage or mosque of Christ of Light due to its connection with the sculpture of Christ (now in the Museum of Santa Cruz) that gave name to the following legend: The horse of El Cid (Castilian military leader) knelt before the mosque as a sign of veneration to a figure of Christ which had been hidden during the centuries of the Muslim invasion and which, indeed, was discovered behind a partition wall with the help of a lamp.
It was built at the end of the 12th Century as the Greater Synagogue of the Toledo Jewish quarter. Later, it was converted for the Christian worship with the name of St. María la Blanca, because its principal statue is a copy of the Vir-gin Blanca of the Cathedral’s choir. Although it was used in the 16th Century as a beguinage for women and at the end of the 18th Centu-ry as military barracks and warehouses of the Royal Treasury, it was declared as a National Monument in the mid-19th Century for the ex-cellent preservation of its Mudejar elements.
It was founded by Alfonso VI after the reconquest of the city. Although it was rebuilt at the beginning of the 14th Century thanks to the noble Mr. Gonza-lo Ruiz de Toledo, the lord of Orgaz, it maintians some original elements. It underwent several later restorations until the transformation of the nave’s gallery into the current El Greco Painting Museum (with an independent entrance for visitors in order to not disturb the liturgical life), where the famous painting of “The burial of the lord of Orgaz” is exhibited”. It represents the miracle that occurred during the funeral rites of Mr. Gonzalo, in which St. Agustín and St. Esteban descended from heav-en to bury him.
It is the oldest temple of the city and the one that keeps elements of all the peoples and cultures that have passed through Toledo. The famous pic-aresque novel of the 16th Century El Lazarillo de Tormes also mentiones it when selling “the wines of the Archpriest of San Salvador de Toledo”. Al-though the parish was destroyed in 1842 due to the great fire of 1822 and the plunder suffered af-ter the invasion of the Napoleonic troops, it came back in the 20th Century becoming the headquar-ters of the Toledo’s Brotherhoods.

6th-7th C. The Visigoth king Recaredo built in 587 a
Visigothic basilica in honor of St. Mary. According to
tradition, the stone of the miracle of St. Ildefonso is preserved in the
current chapel of The Descent.
La Basílica es reconvertida en
Mezquita durante los 300 años de invasión árabe
de la ciudad (707-1085).
8th-11th C. The Basilica is converted into a

11th-13th C. Toledo’s Cathedral is consecrated again to Christianity in
1086. Two years later, it was appointed as Primate Cathedral of the Kingdom
of Spain by Pope Urban II and, in 1227, the works of the current Gothic
construction began under the archbishopric of Mr. Rodrigo Ximénez de Rada and the
reign of Ferdinand III the Saint.
14th-15th C. The works of the main nave end with the closing of the sides, and the construction of the cloister
begins under the archbishopric of Mr. Pedro Tenorio. In 1493, being archbishop
Pedro González de Mendoza, the work concluded with the
closing of the last vault.

Toledo’s Cathedral, Dives Toledana, was built with white stone from Ol-ihuelas on the foundations of the primitive Visigothic basilica of the 6th Century, which was later covered and used as a mosque during the Mus-lim invasion of the city. It restarted the Christian cult in 1086 with just a position change of the presbytery since King Alfonso VI ordered to respect the structure, traditions and the Mozarabic worship. And thanks to the efforts of King Ferdinand III the Saint and archbishop Jiménez de Rada, the current Gothic-style masonry began to be erected in 1227.
Master Martín made the first traces and the construction of the head of the temple, but the placement of the last stone would not arrive until 1493, at the time of cardinal Pedro González de Mendoza. Other older masters of the temple were Juan Guas, Enrique Egas or Juan de Her-rera, referents of the Spanish architecture of the end of the Gothic and the Renaissance. Of its later reforms they stand out, undoubtedly, those driven in the 16th Century by cardinal Cisneros, promoter, among other initiatives, of the Mozarabic Chapel and the Chapter’s House.
20th-21st C. Since the last century, Toledo’s Cathedral has not
undergone significant changes, apart from the specific restoration
of the broken stained glass windows in the years of the
Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the permanent repair of the
roofs in recent years.
S.XVI-XVII S.XVIII-XIXS.XX-XXI
16th-17th C. The archbishop and later cardinal Cisneros closes all the stained glass windows and builds the Chapter’s House, the High Cloister, the Mozarabic Chapel and the altarpiece of the Main Chapel.
18th-19th C. The so-called transparent altar was built between 1729 and 1732,
work of Narciso Tomé, and they were also renovated the façades and other exterior
elements with the current Neoclassical style under the archbishopric of Mr. Francisco Antonio

(allowing access to the temple from the same street’s level).

We are before one of the most imposing cathedrals of Spain, with 113 meters in length, 56 meters in width and a maximum height of 44 meters. Of rectan-gular floor to which it is added an ambulatory or circular head, it is divided into 5 longitudinal naves. The ribbed vaults that cover the temple rest on a total of 88 pillars. While small chapels are located around the perimeter, the most out-standing ones are arranged as apsidal chapels of the head area, being also the largest ones. The Mozarabic Chapel, at the foot of the temple, is outside this delimitation, but with the special feature that this site was originally occupied by the Chapter’s House.
The most important spaces of Toledo’s Cathedral are the Main Chapel, where the Eucharist is celebrated; the Choir, the place where the Cathedral’s Chapter meets for prayer and for the choral office; and the new Chapter’s House that cardinal Cisneros ordered to built close to the apse. A large bell tower beautifies the feet of the temple, while the cloister is attached on the north side.

We can access to the cloister from inside Tole-do’s Cathedral or from the street itself, through the Mollete or Lost Child Door. Prior to its con-struction —promoted by archbishop Tenorio in 1389—, the Jewish market occupied this place.
It is a quadrangular space arcaded by pointed archworks, whose perimetral galleries are cov-ered by ribbed vaults. The part of the cloister that does not have a roof is landscaped, following the aesthetics of the conventual or monastic cloisters.
The cloister walls showed several frescoes made by Pedro Berruguete. But they were replaced by the current ones of Mariano Maella and Francisco Bayeu, of 18th Cen-tury Baroque style. They represent passages of life of Toledo’s saints. The northeastern corner joins the Chapel of St. Blas and the old sum-mer Chapter’s House.
We owe to cardinal Cisneros the addition of the high cloister. His intention was to con-vert the Cathedral’s Chapter into an entity of almost monastic life, something that did not bear fruit, although his work did last. It has a modest and simple style, without important changes or improvements in the lower ma-sonry. Today, both the Chapter’s archive and the library are there located.

Puerta de los Leones / Portal of the Lions
With allusive reliefs at the finish of the six columns which hold the railing of 1646 forming an open space as an atrium that protects the portal. Also known as Portal of the Olive or Portal of Happiness (due to the reliefs of the Assumption of the Virgin celebrated by angels, saints and prophets), or New Portal (because it was the last one to be opened in the church in the 16th Century).
Puerta Llana / Level Portal
Current portal for the Cathedral’s public access, it was built in the days of cardinal Lorenzana (Arch-bishop of Toledo between 1772 and 1800), in order to replace that one known as Postigo de los Carre-tones witch it was the only one built at street level to allow the entry of carts.
Puerta del Reloj / Portal of the Clock
It is the oldest of the Gothic doors and opens on the North end of the transept towards Chapin-ería Street (place where the chapines —old foot-wear— were made and sold). It has been also called along time as Puerta de la Feria (because it gave access to the street where the fair was once celebrated), as Puerta de las Ollas (for the miracle’s perfomance of the conversion of water into wine), or as of the Kings and of the lost Child. Its current and most common name is that of Puerta del Reloj, not only because of the clock that now can be seen on its façade, but also be-cause of the knocked down tower that was on top (demolished in 1889) with clock and bells of the 18th Century, just like the old engravings and photographs indicate.

Campanario / Bell Tower
It rises above 90 meters high and retains inside the largest bell of its kind. At the foot of the tower there is a small door that allows access to the cloister. This door is known as Puerta del Mollete (doughy part of bread) because it was the place where the poor were fed a piece of bread.
It occupies the space of the old Chapter House (of which only a recently discovered starry sky is preserved) and of the old Corpus Christi chapel. It was built between 1502 and 1510 by the architect Enrique Egas, although the son of El Greco, Jorge Manuel, rebuilt it in 1622 when the dome or small tower that crowns it burned down. By order of cardinal Cisneros, from 1504 on a daily mass is here celebrated in the so-called Hispanic Mozarabic Rite.
Puerta de la Torre / Portal of the Tower
Portal on the left of the main façade. Also called Portal of the Hell (due to the content of its carved scenes) or Portal of the Palm Leafs (because it was reserved in the past for the entrance of Las Pal-mas procession on Palm Sunday).
Puerta del Juicio Final / Portal of Forgiveness
Also called Portal of the Notaries (due to the content of its carved scenes).
Puerta del Perdón / Portal of the Forgiveness
Central portal of the main Cathedral’s façade that, like those which flank it, keeps the pointed arch with the original archivolts and gable of the 15th Century. It takes its name from the content of its reliefs, among which they stand out the statue of Christ that occupies the mullion and the scene of the imposition of the chas-uble to St. Ildefonso in the tympanum, although it is also known as the Door of the Kings or of the Archbishops.

y TextilesLocated a few meters from Toledo’s Cathedral, in the old Colegio de Infantes, keeps the 1600 textile pieces of the Cathedral’s Chapter, in addi-tion to the Holy Thursday’s monument. They stand out the 48 tapestries which are placed every year on the Cathedral’s walls during the celebration of Corpus Christi and which can be grouped into four different categories. On the one hand, tho-se who refer to the Apotheosis of the Eucharist. Others with scenes from the Old Testament linked to the old Covenant. Others related to Toledo’s Bishops, and a last group with scenes from the history of the life of man.
Nor can we forget that one known as the As-trolabe. Its origin takes us unequivocally to Flanders, possibly to the second half of the 15th Century. Its decoration tells us the conception of Medieval man regarding the universe in a singu-lar symbiosis of Religion, Mythology and Science. We can appreciate in three different spaces: God ordering the angels to activate the crank that gi-ves movement to the universe (left); a cartogra-phic description of the universe, with the polar star in the middle and the representation of the constellations with their mythological figuration
(center); and the figurative appearance of philo-sophers and poets (right). We can say that we are before the fusion of religion, science and philo-sophy in a piece of a marked symbolism and rich
intellectuality, so much to the like of the no-bility and the high ecclesiastical hierarchy of the time, which began to imbue the precepts of Humanism.
