Renault’s Kadjar proves a family affairRENAULT has climbed ontothe family-sized crossoverbandwagon after watching theNissan Qashqai runaway withsales for the last eight years.

And the new Kadjar has agood starting point: it’s basedon the same chassis as thedominant Nissan.

This isa cardesignedto buildon the runaway success acrossEurope of the Captur compactcrossover. Expect bold colouroptions and neutral, easy-go-ing driving dynamics.

You’ll find the svelte Renaultstyling distinctive from thefront, but less so from the rear,where it mirrors the Clio’sstyling and raises it up a bit.That’s not a bad thing; the Cliohas a fine derrière, but thosehoping for a more mature lookwill have to deal with the Kad-

jar’s more youthful visage.There’s lots of room in the

cabin. While the Kadjar isn’t

especially wide it makes gooduse of its interior space andrear passengers shouldn’t feel

cramped, unless the seats arefilled by NBA stars.

The door pockets are a bitnarrow, but the storage bin be-tween the front seats is huge.

The glovebox is evenlyshaped but will interfere withyour kneesif you’resittingtooclose. The boot has two panelsthat can be adjusted to formdifferent layouts, twoof whichinvolve dividing the large bayinto two smaller chunks. Therear seats can be lowered re-motely from inside the boot.

It’s best to avoid the TCe 130petrol, which is nowhere nearas beefy as its on-paper fig-ures imply. It struggles withovertakes and needs frequentdown-shifts to get it up hills atany speed.

The 130-horsepower dieselis much better, muscling theKadjar along with no worries.It’s tuned for flexibility, sittingat a relatively busy 2,160rpm

at 70mph, but that does meanno down-shifts are needed onthe motorway.

Only the top trim level feelsparticularly premium, withswathes of hard plastic put-ting a dampener on parts of mid-range models’ interiors.The navigation and media in-terface is marvellous, though;sharp and responsive withgood graphics (and adjustablecolour themes...).

You’ll enjoy the composedand settled ride despite ahealthy dollop of body roll incorners. To add to the refine-ment the Kadjar is a quietbeast.

A lot comes down to the styl-ing. There’s plenty of spacefor five, a good boot and whatseem like easily-cleanable sur-faces, so families are an obvi-ous target. But the Qashqaiagainst which the Kadjar isso boldly pitched sells a hugenumber as company cars, soit will be interesting to seewhether Renault targets busi-

ness users as well.This car summed up in a sin-

gle word: Bold

Fears that plans couldrisk jamming up roads

THE Government’s housebuildinganddevelopment plans could cause grid-lock on the roads, a campaign grouphas warned.

Planning policies should be basedaround the supply of public transport,said the Campaign for Better Trans-port (CBT). If transport is not takeninto account, “new housing, retail andoffice developments risk jamming upthe roads and pushingpeople intohav-ing to drive everywhere,”it said.

The CBTcited research showingthatbuilding conventional office spacealongside the trunk road network sig-

nificantly increases the number of ve-hicles on the road and journey times.Land-use planning and transport poli-cies which support public transport,walking and cycling should be used,it said, to promote development thatgeneratesless traffic while helping theeconomy, the environment and publichealth.

The CBT report detailed a range of projects across the country that havesuccessfully combined all of these ob-

jectives.CBT chief executive, Mr Joseph,

said: “You can tackle housing short-ages and support new developmentwithout resorting to more sprawling

suburbs, acres of car parks and bignew roads.

“Our research shows that acrossthe country new housing and retaildevelopment planned around pub-lic transport is successfully creatingbetter, more economically productiveplaces.”

“There is clear evidence that whenpeople are offered high quality publictransport a lot of them use it.”

A spokesman for the Department forCommunities and Local Governmentsaid: “Far from ignoring transportneeds the Government has in fact put

sustainable transport at the heart of its planning reforms.”

Electric vehicles score ‘sociapoints’ with peers says surv

TWO thirds of British driversaspire to own an ultra-low-emis-sion vehicle towin a moralvicto-ry over friends and neighbours,according to a new government-backed study.

The Go Ultra Low survey foundthat 67 per cent of those ques-tioned wanted to own high-tech

electric and hybrid vehicles toscore ‘social points’ in the facesof their peers.

And it’s people with the sur-name Jones who are among theguiltiest when it comes to ‘keep-ing up with the Joneses’.

As many as 77 per ses admitted to wantlow-emission car forsocial one-upmanshto the national 67 peage.

And 88 per cent think that the poterunning cost savin
