Workshop on “ New trends in chromogenic agars & ELISA process in

pharmaceutical /food/medical diagnosis –Microbiological approach”

A two day workshop was organized by the department of Microbiology on “

New trends in chromogenic agars & ELISA process in pharmaceutical

/food/medical diagnosis –Microbiological approach” on 22nd & 23rd Sep-

2013.The programme started on 22nd morning with inaugural session at

MBA seminar hall at 10.00 a.m. Director- Col.M.Vijaya Rao, Principal -

Prof.Y.Ashok, Resource person- Mr.Navaneeth Saxena from Chromogenic

lifesciences India ,pvt.ltd., & Dr.K.Anuradha, Head of the Department,

Microbiology addressed the students during inaugural session, which was

followed by the technical session.

Mr.Navaneeth Saxena briefed on conventional and modern methods of

culturing and identification of bacteria. Afternoon session started with

practical lab work on bacteriological agars – their importance in culturing,

enumeration, and identification/diagnosis. Clinical samples like E.coli,

Staphylococcus, Klebsiella, Proteus were inoculated on Blood agar,

chromogenic agar, Mc conkey agar, by the students.

M.Sc students of Microbiology (I & II years) & Biochemistry (II years) had

attended the practical session in Microbiology Department. Session was

successfully completed by active participation of students in

culturing/inoculating the bacteria wherein they were educated on different

streaking methods. On 23rd, programme started with technical session on

ELISA – principle, technique and types. This was later followed by practical

session in which ELISA kit was demonstrated and the results were read

using the ELISA reader arranged by the chromogenic Life sciences. Ltd

All student participants were given certificates at the end.

Page 12: GTVM...lifesciences India ,pvt.ltd., & Dr.K.Anuradha, Head of the Department, Microbiology addressed the students during inaugural session, which was followed by the technical session

University of Hyderabad organized the A.P Science Congress-2013 from 14-

16 November 2013. The congress was supported by various organizations

like Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences (APAS), Nuclear Fuel Complex

(NFC) etc. 65 students from B.Sc 1st and 2nd year (Life Sciences) from our

college attended the science congress.

About 380 students from schools within 5kms range of the university were

invited. Schools like Oakridge International, Oasis international, Kendriya

Vidyalaya, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, D.A.V Public school, Vidyanjali etc.

participated in the congress. Apart from these students, children of the staff

and faculty of the university also showed active participation.

The students of our college were given the job of mentoring the students

from various schools and demonstrating science-based experiments from

physics, chemistry and biology. Physics experiments included calculating the

lung capacity, air pressure, Archimedes principle etc. Experiments in biology

included calculation of BMI (body-mass index), pulse rate, digestion of

starch by salivary amylase etc. Chemistry experiments included quick

titration, quick chromatography and finding the pH of different food samples.

The students from the schools and our college were equally enthralled by

this experience. Various competitions like poster presentations, quiz etc

were conducted by the university in order to encourage the students. The

winners were appreciated and prizes were given away.

Workshops on Robotics were organized by the International Institute of

Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad. The programme concluded by a

lecture by Dr. Arunan from Homi Bhabha research centre on

“Neurosciences”.
