COME AND VISIT

This Autumn we are 40 Years Young!

We have grown and changed during that time.

We would love to catch up with current or ex employers or ex apprentices or anybody

who is interested in the Motor Industry. Why not visit and have a look around.

Doncaster Rotherham & District Motor Trades Group Training Association Limited (Also know as GTA)

The GTA was started by the R.T.I.T.B. (Road Transport Industry Training Board) on 28th September 1972.

(The same day a certain actress – Gwyneth Paltrow was born)

The GTA was initially based at ‘Edwards Motors’ on York Road (now where Mothercare is). Edwards were

the local Triumph dealer having been established in 1933.

In 1976 Mr Geoff Thompson, aided by his wife Myra, took over the management and development of

Doncaster GTA and guided the Association until their retirement in 2006. Geoff still sits on the Board of

Directors.

The organisation is currently managed by Chief Executive Mr Clifford Bacon. Cliff has been with GTA for

over 25 years and will be known to many of you.

From Edwards the GTA moved next door to ‘Thompsons’ who were the Bedford Vauxhall main dealers for

Doncaster.

In 1976 GTA moved again to ‘Jacksons’ the British Leyland dealership for Doncaster. Jacksons were sited

next to the Minster Church where Tesco now stands and were eventually to become part of the Perry Group

(Rocar Moores).

In 1984 GTA purchased our current site in Armthorpe where we have grown significantly in terms of size

and training opportunities provided.

GTA today employs over 40 staff. We offer Specialist Training for the Retail Motor Industry, The Road

Haulage/ Logistics Industry, Business Administration/ Management, Health and Safety. We also have a

large site in Sheffield. We deliver Industry Apprenticeships, Manufactures Training Programmes, Small

Bespoke Courses, and School Vocational Programmes. We have an excellent reputation built on 40 years of

serving industry needs.

Over 40 years we estimate that:

We have assisted in creating over 8000 full time jobs many of whom are now in senior positions or have

their own business.

We have trained over 8000 Fork Lift Operators

We have successfully trained over 1000 Lorry Drivers

We have drunk over a million cups of coffee!

No wonder there’s a hosepipe ban!

We would love to know where our ex learners have ended up, you are welcome to contact us at any time.

On Tuesday the 19th June our Chief Executive Mr Clifford Bacon will be a guest at the IMI Outstanding

Achiever Awards at Fanshaw.

We have been short listed in the category of Approved Centre of the Year.

We are pleased to have made it this far and hope that Cliff brings back the top award! Watch this space.

The awards are to be presented by HRM Prince Michael of Kent who is patron of the IMI.

CENTRE OF AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRONICS

DRIVER CPC

After the predicted slow start to this new

qualification interest levels are now improving.

Saturday modules are proving extremely popular

with most being fully booked. At GTA we offer

a complete Driver CPC syllabus for LGV/PCV

licence holders enabling drivers to complete their

5x7 hour modules (35 hours approved training).

We have programmed Driver CPC dates

throughout the remainder of 2012. The most

popular module remains the ‘Social & Legal’

unit which covers Drivers’ Hours, Digital

Tachograph’s, Working Time Directive and

other transport legislation.

All prices include 7 hours approved training, all

course handouts etc., certification, uploading of

driver details to DSA database and lunch/

refreshments. As a point of interest several

delegates have successfully completed their 35

hours of training resulting in their Driver

Qualification Card (DQC) being issued by the

DSA/DVLA. These delegates include two GTA

instructors: Ian Goldacre and Richard Marsh.

Well done!!

BODY SHOP

On the GTA website you will find four new

courses been uploaded:-

Basic MIG/ MAG Welding

Basic Vehicle Refinishing

Vehicle Fade Out Repair

Advanced Vehicle Refinishing

For more information on these courses please

contact Steve Chappell or Ryan Warren.

TRANSPORT MANAGER CPC

These are changing times for the Manager CPC with

the National and International qualification being

combined as one in January 2012. This means

anyone wishing to take the exams will now have to

sit two exams (one multi-choice and one case study

written paper) rather than the previous system of

three exams for a National qualification plus a fourth

if they required the International element.

We still offer a ten day block study course for the

Haulage (LGV) qualification with the added

possibility of Passenger (PCV) block courses

depending on demand. Home study courses will also

be available and we remain an approved OCR

Examination Centre so the exams will take place on

our site. The exams continue to be held quarterly.

Anyone with an existing National CPC can still

upgrade to International level during 2012 exam

series’, we have programmed at least one block

study course (4 days) to cover this eventuality.

DGSA

Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA)

training courses are programmed every

quarter to prepare delegates for the external

DGSA exams.

For details of any logistics courses or

prices please contact Darren Ieronimo or

Charlotte Clark.

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS

We are trailing a computer

programme that allows learners to

speak to the computer and it will

recognise speech. This programme

will embed punctuation skills.

The lorry as it came to us from DHL. The lorry finished and ready to go back to DHL.

THIS YEARS APPRENTICE CHOSEN CHARITY IS THE YORKSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE FIRST

EVENT 2012

The Air Ambulance First Event 2012

Several apprentices, staff and friends undertook the Yorkshire Three Peaks on Saturday 21st

April.

The weather had been wet for the week before and the day was no different. Due to the bad

weather the walk was cut short. So we, staff, friends and apprentices reattempted it on 23rd June 2012 and suc-

cessfully completed it.

On the 22nd September 2012 we are holding a car boot sale and car wash at the Rands Lane Training Centre.

Pitches are £7.00 and a car wash is £5.00.

GTA PROUD TO SUPPORT ‘LIFEWISE’ (DHL)

Following a recent request from our friend’s at DHL Tickhill, the Apprentices on the Heavy Vehicle, Body

Repair and Vehicle Refinishing programme have refurbished an old yard shunter for use in the purpose built

Lifewise Centre at Hellaby Rotherham.

The vehicle was in a rather ‘shabby’ state with lots of missing parts, thanks to the support (parts) from John

Hudson of Bawtry we managed to rebuild it and then with great effort we refinished it in DHL yellow.

The truck will be used to promote road safety around Commercial Vehicles and is part of DHL’s national

commitment to road safety.

Around 8000 school children a year will access Lifewise and learn safety and other important life skills. The

project is joint managed by South Yorkshire Fire Service and other community groups.
