Pleasenotethatthedatainthefirstfileisidenticaltothedatainthesecond,third,andfourthfiles.Thesecond,third,andfourthfilesareprovidedforuserswhorequirealimitednumberofrowsperfile.Regardingthefifthfile,usersshouldbeawarethatpriortothetransferoftheoriginalGTDdatafromPinkertonGlobalIntelligenceServices(PGIS)toSTART,allrecordsofterroristattacksduring1993werelost.Severaleffortsweremadetorecovertheseincidentsfromoriginalnewssources.Unfortunately,duetothechallengesofretrospectivedatacollectionforeventsthathappenedmorethanfifteenyearsago,thenumberofcasescollectedfor1993isonly15%ofthenumberreportedbyPGIS.Asaconsequenceweexcludeall1993attacksfromtheGTDdatatopreventusersfrommisinterpretingthelowfrequencyin1993asanactualcount.However,weprovidethereconstructed1993casesforthoseresearcherswhowouldfindvalueinexploringtheseincidents.Together,withthePGISrecordedmarginalcountsforeachcountryprovidedintheGTDcodebook,analystscanusethesedatatointerpolatevaluesforthemissing1993cases.ItisthepolicyoftheDepartmentofHomelandSecuritytoprotecttheprivacyofindividuals.TheinformationyouhaverequestedfromtheGlobalTerrorismDatabasemaycontaininformationrelatedtospecificindividuals.DHSrequiresthatyoutakeeverypossibleprecautiontoprotectthisinformationandthatyouuseitforthepurposeofadvancingtheunderstandingofterrorism.Ifyouencounteranyinformationaboutyourselfthatyoubelievetobeinaccurateandwishtohaveremovedfromthedatabase,pleasecontactmeatgtd@start.umd.edu.AwebbasedinterfacefortheGTD,includingadditionalinformationonthedataanditsusage,isavailableatwww.start.umd.edu/gtd.ThankyouforyourinterestintheGlobalTerrorismDatabase.Wehopethatyoufindittobeausefultool.IfyouencounteranyproblemswiththeenclosedCDoritscontents,pleasecontacttheGTDteamviaemailatgtd@start.umd.edu.Wewelcomeyourfeedbackonthedataanditsapplicationtoyourwork.Sincerely,
