DESCRIPTION

Three’s a charm for GT Active. In our third year of Good Times Weekly’s annual magazine, we salute the great outdoors in Santa Cruz County and also take a deeper look into the area’s fitness and health scenes. What thrilled us the most, however, was giving away several tickets to a lucky local who had the opportunity to experience a one-of-a-kind helicopter ride over our lush county and ocean, only to be set down at Talbott Vineyards nearby for a wine tasting. Fun. See page 56 for the full report on that. Also, take note of our center spread, featuring the best pictures of the year from Santa Cruz Waves. In the meantime, as you peruse this year’s publication, hopefully you will be reminded of how much there is to do here—not just in the great outdoors but in your ever-evolving exploration of health and fitness, too. Things are never dull whenthere is another humanstrapped to your back andyou are falling out of anairplane 10,000 feet aboutthe ground. (And really, if itwas dull, then wed behappy to slap some lifeback into you.) But thatswhat makes skydiving sothrilling. Thanks to onelocal portal, Skydive SurfCity, which has been gener-ating buzz over the last fewyears, locals are offered aterrific mix of havingexpertly trained jumpers attheir service and, well, plenty of adventure abovethe Central Coast.

Owner Volker Haag, who hails from Germanyand has been somewhat of aglobetrotter, experiencedhis first dive nearly adecade ago back eastinNew Jersey, in fact. Headmits that hes been drawnback to the diving experi-ence ever since.

I am a very ambi-tious person, Volker says.I went to school forever, got good grades and tried togo for the corporate career, but I had much more funletting go after moving toAustralia and New Zealand.Jumping out of planes andskydiving helped me let goout of that corporate box Iwas in. I was really set upto be a business person.

Not forever, thoughat least not in the tradi-tional sense. Several yearsago, he became sole ownerof Skydive Surf City LLCand, to date, has experi-enced 10,000 skydives.

The company has twobig-engine, 300hp planes, and dives take place sixdays during the week(except Wednesdays). Afreefall lasts approximately60 seconds, depending onbody weight. Individualswill then have about fiveminutes under the canopy

to relish the view and thejourney back to earth.Volker suggests planningahead: two to three hoursfrom the time of arrival atSkydive Surf Citys lair atWatsonville airport to thetime youre walking out thedoor and back to reality.

The beauty of what wedo is specialize in first-timejumps, Haag explains.Anybody can come in andthey will literally be strappedto us and doing a tandemjump. Anybody can do.

And he meansanybody. Recent visitorsinclude an 89-year-oldwoman and, over the lastyear, several individuals cel-ebrating their 80th birthday.

I love it because itsjust freedom, he adds. It's the closest we humanscan get to flying. When weare falling, you actuallyforget you are falling and itslike you are flying. Its quitepeaceful. | GREG ARCHER

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS1997 1st place O'Neill Cold Water Classic, Santa Cruz2011 1st place Crowned Big Wave World Tour Champion 2011/2012 1st place Mavericks Invitational

The veteran big-wave surfer Peter Mel,who won for his first time theMavericks Invitational Surf Contest inJanuary, attributes his victory to finallyfeeling like he could relax and enjoy thesession. The 43-year-old, Santa Cruz-reared pro has surfed and competed atMavericks for 23 years, establishinghimself as a staple favorite among thecolossal-wave-chasers, but, until now,has narrowly missed taking the title. Inthe past, Mel says he's always felttremendous pressure to win, but inrecent years, that's changed. Call it anepiphany, he says, but the reality hasbecome that my professional surfingcareer has given way to my son's career, and my marriage, so this was just kindof a fun thing for me to do. He saysthat those developments and otherfactors, like his taking on a full-time jobas marketing director for Quiksilver inNewport Beachwhich has taken off

the pressure to win contests in order toprovide for his familyand the decisionby the Mavericks competitors this yearto evenly split the prize money (Meltook home $5,333.33), all contributedto his feeling perfectly primed for thecontest. I was in a different state ofmind than previous years, he says. Iwas relaxed. If I'm not stressing, itreflects in my health, and it reflects inthe way I surf. While Mel says it feelslike the stakes and stress levels associ-ated with world-class surf competitionshave gone down, the crown title is stillone of the most gratifying experiencesof his life. It feels really good to be aMavs champion, that was always a goaland a dream. I almost kind of gave itaway, in the sense that I didn't reallyfeel like I needed it anymore, but ithappened. And now, it's justwow. Itfeels really damn good. Learn more atpetermel.com. | JOEL HERSCH

On the Monterey Bay, one of the most intimateand gratifying experiences with nature an adven-turer can have is a close encounter with a whale, and an early-morning outing with Venture QuestKayaking is a great way to do just that. Onemoment you're kayaking along on a cold, quiet morning through the glassy gray waters, not expecting anything, and suddenly, there'sa loud whoosh, and something massivebreaks the surface right alongside you, saysDave Johnston, a professional kayaker andhead guide for Venture Quest. That'll reallyget your heart going, he admits. It's amazing. You feel very connected to nature when some-thing as big as a whale suddenly pays attentionto you. It can change your life. Venture Questleads sea kayaking tours from the Municipal Wharfand also up the Elkhorn Slough in Watsonville.Johnston, who has been leading kayak tours formore than 25 years, starting out in the white waterrapids of the Sierra Nevada, also practices kayak-

surfing, -fishing, and -whale-watching, for which hehas developed a sixth-sense detection. Of all thekayak guides in the world, Johnston has the qualifi-cations to be among the best. He has been a

member of nine U.S. Surf Kayak Teams, hastwo World Championship titles, and five

National titles. During tours, Johnstoninstructs on basic kayaking, ocean safety, delves into the natural history of theMonterey Bay, and environmental aware-ness. It's the perfect way to go out andget a feel for the ocean, he says. Graywhales frequent the Monterey Bay close to

shore beginning in March and through May,he says. The best time for kayakers to have

animal encounters are early mornings, which iswhy Johnston advises that people come early.Because meeting whales: It reminds you thatthere's a whole world under there. VentureQuest Kayaking, Municipal Wharf #2, SantaCruz, 425-8445. | STEVE KUEHL

It's not just your physical ability, says Melissa Stoll, the assistant coach for thegirls' 14-year-olds team at Main Beach VolleyballClub (MBVBC). The only way you're going towin is if you're all on the same page. BURN BABY, BURNCALORIES THAT IS. CROSSFITS GREG AMUNDSON SHOWS US HOW. / PHOTO: KEANA PARKER

  • gtweekly.com l GT ACTIVE l 21

    GT / FITNESS

After a group of 12 adultssprinted through the parkinglot, they dashed into the gym todo a vigorous combination ofpushups and deadlifts.Throughout their workout, theycheered each other on andencouraged one another to keep

going. A combination of hardwork, sweat, and motivation filled the gym, andafter sitting through just one CrossFit class, it isevident that this is not the average workout.

Instructor Greg Amundson teachesCrossFit classes along with five other instruc-tors at his gym, CrossFit Amundson, located onPortola Drive in Santa Cruz. Amundson beganCrossFit training in December 2001 withfounder Greg Glassman at the original CrossFitHeadquarters in Santa Cruz. Amundson, whowas working as a deputy sheriff at the time, became hooked after his first workout. In 2007Amundson was recruited by the DEA tobecome a special agent in Southern California, but after working there for four years, he real-ized that while he enjoyed his job, he just lovedCrossFit. He retired from the DEA a year ago,and returned to Santa Cruz to open his owngym, which opened on July 2, 2012.

Amundson uses a unique approach toteaching fitness, which has been described asCrossFit with a mind, body, and spirit twist.

Its really easy to make the body strong;anybody can do that, says Amundson. But, tomake the mind strong and the spirit strong, andto harmonize the three is challenging, but thatswhat we do here.

Amundson came to develop this style ofteaching once he saw how his body, mind, and

spirit grew stronger due to his hard work in thegym. He attributes positive language in the gymas one of the major facets of his teachings. Were reinforcing things were doing right, headds. Were talking about things were gratefulfor, as opposed to things that were doingwrong or things that are lacking in our lives. That idea radiates through our physical fitnessand mindset.

By November 2012, Amundsons gymreached 100 members, which was his idealcapacity. Currently, theres a waitlist of about 50people to get into his gyms CrossFit classes, but every Saturday at 10 a.m., he offers a freeworkout that is open to the public. CrossFitclasses are offered four times in the morningand four times in the evening, every weekday.Amundson offers private training by appoint-ment, and works with professional UFC fight-ers, Jiu-Juitsu practioners, and boxers.

Everyone, regardless of your experiencelevel, trains together, he says. In any givenclass, we can have Olympic-level athletes train-ing alongside people who havent been exercis-ing in twenty years. The environment we createis very loving and supportive, and everyonetrains together as a team.

Adriana Torres, 26, of Santa Cruz recentlyjoined CrossFit Amundson because she wantedto feel healthy and be pushed to do more. Theexperience here is so unique, and I think itsbetter than the gym, Torres says. Youre a partof a team that pushes you. You can really feelthe encouragement and motivation.

Amundson notes that CrossFit is not likefitness boot camps, where they congratulateyou upon reaching your goals and send you onyour way. CrossFit is a lifetime, he explains.

Its an understanding that fitness is a part oflife. I bring in this concept of longevity, and mygoal for the athlete when they join my gym is toinspire them to be physically, mentally, andspiritually fit for the rest of their life.

Amundson, who also teaches Krav Magain his gym, works for CrossFit Inc., whichallows him to teach seminars and lecture on thewarrior spirit of CrossFit around the world. Ilearn during my travels, and I bring that coursecontent and the information Ive learned backin to the gym, he says. My teachings arealways relevant and new, and challenging forthe athlete in their mind, body and spirit.

Another unique teaching component ofAmundsons is the Question of the Week, which can range from simple questions like,What are you grateful for? to What is yourpurpose in life? On the day that the questionis proposed, the workout is shorter, but thattime is substituted with a period of contempla-tion, reflection, and journaling.

Were teaching people to think deeplyabout their life, purpose, and how they can bestgive back and serve, he says.

The definition of CrossFit, according toAmundson, is constantly varied, high intensity, functional movement. The workouts are scala-ble to fit the needs and the physical capacity ofthe individual, which allows the average indi-vidual to participate in CrossFit.

Many gyms are promoting the physiqueto look a certain way, says Amundson. Wecare about what the mind, body, and spirit cando. Were chasing performance.

Cat Willis, director, founded the organi-zation in 2011 and officially opened its doorsin Feb. 2012. She has been dancing all herlife, professionally training since 20 years oldand studying in places as far away as Jamaicaand Ghana, but now puts all of her energyinto her new and growing center.

Willis says speech can be communicat-ed through movement, and that movement istrans-cultural. Willis wishes, in establishingthe center, to create more diversity in Santa

Cruz, and celebrate more the culture alreadyhere. She also wants to create a space whereartists can perfect their art and teach, andcreate really high art.

With no cultural dance classes for children existing previously in Santa Cruz, she also wishes to fill that gap for a reallymulti-generational community, accessible to manythrough scholarships the center provides.

I love the idea that there would be aplace thats sort of a centerpiece within a citywhere people could come and learn aboutother cultures through movement anddance, Willis says.

With more than 15 teaching artists, theTannery Dance & Cultural Center sees theattendance of hundreds of people on a weeklybasis, ranging from 5 months and up. Classesinclude yoga, pilates, capoeira, kickboxing, and African dance. Some of the hottest classescurrently are the Haitian Folkloric,AfroHouseHop, and Modern Dance classes.

Flashback to the past with Santa Cruz Swing Club, found-ed by Chuck Dicks, one of 12 co-organizers that run theorganization. Originating in 1992, this lively dozen holdsa monthly dance party at the Mid-County Senior Centerin Capitola, an all-volunteer-comprised club, and allmoney made at these dances stays and goes back into theclubs next dance. Ive danced all my life, Dicks says ofhis long swing career. Im 72 right now, so I was a teenag-er when swing dance was really popular. His interest hasbeen contagious. Dicks says up to 100 people attend themonthly dances, but about 400 people are officially ontheir mailing list. He says there is so much interest inswing because not only is it a hobby, it can also be exer-cise. Many group members compete locally as well. But

If theres one thing Santa Cruz does not want for,it is artistic expression. And artistic expressionfinds its homesince 1978in the Santa CruzBallet Theater (SCBT), where petite, junior andsenior companies are classically trained in ballet.Longtime owners of the studio and artistic direc-tors of SCBT, Robert Kelley and Diane Cypher, have been with the institution since 1999. Having been bullied in her highschool years because of being over-weight, then later suffering a humiliat-ing slander from a poor fitness instruc-tor, Pate felt virtually lost in not want-ing to exercise. But with the help ofher family (that was populated withaerobics instructors), she found a wayto overcome these personal imageobstacles and gathered an impressivearts education, later mastering in exer-cise physiology. She then earned herfaculty status at San Jose State, excelling at teaching fitness programsthere for the last 18 years.

    WHATS

    EATINGYOU?

    by Andrea Wachter

    THE HIDDEN

    DILEMMA:Eating disorders and

    the recovery that awaits

  • gtweekly.com l GT ACTIVE l 45

    GT / HEALTH

An eating disordercould equally be called athinking disorder. So manyunkind thoughts plaguethe minds of people whobattle their body and food.As people overcome eatingdisorders, they realize thatits their thinking, waymore than their body thathas been the cause of theirsuffering. A critical internaldialogue (or more accu-rately monologue!) causesanxiety and/or depression. To recover from an eatingdisorder a person mustretrain their brain andlearn how to challengerather than believe everythought their mind con-jures up.

Our culture has pro-grammed us to see foods in

terms of good and bad.We need to upgrade thatprogram and learn to seefood in terms of nourish-ment and periodic pleasurerather than constant com-fort, punitive punishmentor sweet sedative. In thebook I co-wrote, TheDont Diet, Live-ItWorkbook, we call thisnew paradigm a Live-It.A Live-It is about livingwith food rather thanavoiding it or overdoing it.

Learning to Live-Itmeans finding a balancebetween movement andrest. Many people exercisewith an internal whip thattells them what to do.Others find it hard to moveat all. A Live-It allows peo-ple to move in ways theyenjoy and rest without anounce of guilt.

Learning how to copewith emotions is anothercomponent of a Live-It. Inthe same way that we cate-gorize foods as good andbad, many people believethere are good and bad feel-ings. All emotions are natu-

ral and when we welcomethem, they pass. Many ofus were taught to stuffdown our feelings, whichcauses depression and/oraddiction. A Live-Itinvolves welcoming all feel-ings, alleviating the need tonumb them unnaturally.

It is possible to retrainyour brain. It is possible toeat only when you arephysically hungry and tendto your emotions whenyou are emotionally hun-gry. It is possible to movein ways you love and restwithout guilt. It is possibleto learn to Live-It!

We use a very light touch, oftentimesjust barely touching the body in very specif-ic areas, says John. It starts a process oftension release, and at the same time theperson becomes more aware of what thattension was related to.

The yin to Johns yang, his wife andbusiness partner, Dr. Christina Amaral, alsospecializes in NSA, but she brings her ownunique approach to each patient. Peoplecan access different parts of themselves thatthey wouldnt with just me, or maybe theywouldnt with just him, she says. Whenpeople come to see the two of us, they getvery well-rounded care.

    In Tune?Get there with Acutonics

Having been introduced to the benefits ofacupuncture just three years ago, I had oncebeen skeptical of the process and above all,the needles. But the ills I sought relief fromwere treated, so when given the chance todiscover more about Resonation Acupuncture(known as Acutonics, or the use of tuningforks and sound vibration in conjunctionwith acupuncture) I was intrigued.

Katie Briggs, a local licensed acupunctur-ist who graduated from Five Branches nineyears ago, specializes in this technique. Ischeduled a session with her and sheallowed my regular practitioner to sit in withus to observe and take pictures. Katie offersa quaint studio treatment room within a one-minute walk to the beaches by 16th Avenue. She has lived in Santa Cruz for more than 20years, having also graduated from UCSC andtraveled to China to further study heracupuncture field, followed by an in-depthtraining of Acutonics in New Mexico.

Briggs explained that the sound of vibra-tion is really effective for individuals who

may be over-stimulated with needles or beintimidated by the idea of needle insertion,or it might be that they are in so much painthat the needles could cause the patient fur-ther issues. Briggs originally came acrossthis therapy when she had a nerve conditionthat was not responding to any kind oftouch or acupuncture.

Briggs goal as a practitioner is to solicit adeep level of relaxation. She explained thatthese vibrations also work well with boneyoutcroppings, in addition to the rib area ofthe liver and lungs.

After the initial patient/practitioner inter-view, she placed some heating pads on areasof my body that helped with relaxation andthe needle. Her needle work was deft andpainless. But when she started the tuningfork resonations, I felt a whole new wave ofcalm and, literally, a body resolution. Sheeven used several large gongs toward the endwhose sounds helped me recollect my worldtravels. A soothing and worthy experience.234-6616, resonationacupuncture.com. | SK
