chosen based on their profession-al experience and expertise as well as demonstrated ability to teach online” said Totten. “Stu-dents can log into the courses anytime, day or night, from any computer but personal interac-tion is not compromised. They are able to make a personal con-nection with instructors through audio presentations over the length of the course.”

‘UGotClass’ courses have a 96% satisfaction rate with our students” said Zech Hipp, Mar-keting and Sales Coordinator for LERN. “While we give a full refund to any student who re-quests it, we have given out only 50 refunds out of 8,000 registra-tions in four years, an extremely low refund rate in continuing education.”

After finishing these cours-es, students can immediately use the skills they learn to improve their performance in the work-place and quickly see results. “I learned that it will take a lot of

trial and error to have a well-ex-ecuted and integrated marketing plan using Facebook. I look for-ward to using what I learned to help make this happen.” wrote a student in an evaluation for the Facebook for Business course.

A sample of courses and certificates that start September 2 are: Inbound Marketing – Im-plementing lead-nurturing cam-paigns that result in sales; Man-aging Social Media Platforms – Practical how-to techniques; Mobile Marketing – A hot new trend for business; Video Mar-keting – Creating videos that tell a compelling story; Non-profit Administration – Improving rev-enue generation and planning; and Customer Service – Retain-ing customers, serving your au-dience and turning inquiries into sales.

PORTSMOUTH -Abenaqui Country Club is

proud to announce its new 4,000 square foot addition to the main clubhouse and extensive inte-rior renovations to the original 100 year old Rye landmark. The newly expanded and renovated club is scheduled to open on Me-morial Day 2014 according to club manager Lee Pavlas.

Laura Malloy of Malloy Interiors said the new interior look creates an upscale, casual and comfortable feel. “Abenaqui Country Club members feel the club is like their second home and many have belonged for years, so we capitalized on the traditional feel of the club, but with a fresh look so that mem-bers of all ages would be com-fortable,” according to Malloy, who led the interior design effort.

The changes showcase the classic refined look of the main clubhouse while the expansion can better accommodate the

many needs of their members, according to Malloy. “Now, members can choose from the more elegant and quiet experi-ence in the main dining room, the lively and plush lounge scene or the family friendly dining room designed for parents and children,” she said. The expand-ed function room will accommo-date gatherings over 200 people to serve large weddings, family or business events. Furniture selection for the outdoor patio and newly upholstered seating for the main dining room were among the club’s priorities.

Club manager Pavlas said, “I want to thank all the profes-sionals who helped us bring our vision to a reality, including DeStefano Architects, Martini-Northern Construction and the hard work of staff and members of Abenaqui Country Club,” and added that these renova-tions will serve us well for many years. ROCHESTER - To continue to move the

home health care agency for-ward in a positive direction, The Homemakers Health Services has been restructured to include both a chief executive officer and a chief care coordinator.

“This is the first step in a proactive and on-going orga-nizational review process here at The Homemakers Health Services designed to provide guidance with respect to our organizational structure, orga-nizational culture, and building and managing work and teams,” says Susan Reid, president of the Board of Directors. “The pur-pose of this review process is to align all of our resources –which include people, programs and fi-nancial resources - with strategic objectives that will allow us to operate more efficiently and ef-fectively now and in the future so that we may continue to meet the increasing needs of the people we serve while maintaining finan-cial stability.”

As part of this restructur-ing, Heidi Morrison (photo on left), former director of clinical services, has assumed the posi-tion of CEO and former CEO and Adult Day Care Director Linda Howard (photo on right) has made a lateral move to take on the duties and responsibilities of the newly created Chief Care Coordinator position.

“As a Board, we believe this restructuring will better utilize the strengths and expertise of these two individuals,” says Reid.

Morrison, who holds a Master of Science degree from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor of Science in Nurs-ing degree from Capital Univer-sity in Columbus Ohio, has more than 20 years of clinical nursing experience as well as vast experi-ence in supervision and manage-ment of large staffs.

“I look forward to meet-ing the challenges home health agencies face today and also look forward to working together with Linda Howard to ensure we continue to meet the health care needs of people in our commu-nity while remaining fiscally re-sponsible,” says Morrison.

As Chief Care Coordina-tor, Howard, who holds a Bach-elor of Science degree in Health and Human Services from New England College in Henniker, will be overseeing and working closely with both the Adult Day Care and the Home Support pro-grams.

“Working directly with cli-ents and coordinating their care to ensure we are meeting their needs has always been my pas-sion,” says Howard. “I’m very excited to be able to combine my passion with my educational background and experience here at The Homemakers.”

PORTSMOUTH -There’s no better way to

beat the heat of summer than by viewing a great film in the cool comfort of the Music Hall His-toric Theater on Chestnut Street, or in the Loft on Congress Street. Continuing the Music Hall tra-dition of singular cinema, July screenings span a wide range, including indies, international films, and documentaries exclu-sive to the Seacoast.

July features ‘Fed Up’ on Thursday, July 17 at 7 p.m. at the Historic Theater — a new docu-mentary about food and health in America from Katie Couric, Laurie David (Oscar winning producer of An Inconvenient Truth) and director Stepha-

PORTSMOUTH -This summer the Wen-

tworth Lear Historic Houses invites you to come aboard and view this season’s exhibition, titled “Water, Wood & Wind: Regional Craft on the Pisca-taqua.” This exhibit will focus on the history and construction of watercraft specific to the Pis-cataqua, including: the Pisca-taqua Wherry, the Whitehall Rowboat, the Merry Mac Sail-boat, and the Gundalow. The exhibition will be on display through September 5.

The Piscataqua River is known for having one of the fastest navigable tidal currents in the United States, making it necessary to design craft capa-ble of handling swiftly running waters. This dynamic exhibit

PORTSMOUTH -What does it really mean to

be a father? Absolutely nothing, at least according to The Myth of the Father, a new comedy writ-ten by Lawrence Hennessy and directed by Deb Barry, sched-uled to run as a part of The Late-Night Series at the Players’ Ring Theatre in Portsmouth from July 18 through July 27 at 10 p.m.; Sundays at 9 p.m.

Based on Hennessy’s Doc-toral Thesis of the same name, The Myth of the Father takes aim at the theory of, “essential-ism,” the idea that there are cer-tain parental functions which can only be performed by men or women. But don’t worry, when-ever the temptation to be taken seriously arises, there is plenty of word play, satire, and slapstick to keep things ridiculous.

Imagine Abraham and Isaac on an overnight camping trip or Joseph trying to convince his idealistic son to take carpen-try more seriously. The Myth of the Father takes three father-son relationships, Jesus and Joseph, Abraham and Isaac, and Oe-dipus and Laius and explores the different styles of parenting exhibited by each of the fathers involved. All of this is held to-gether by the world’s oldest talk show, Out of Character, hosted by none other than Tiresius, the blind seer from Oedipus Rex. The Myth of the Father is the second Barry-Hennessy col-laboration in as many years; the two having worked together in The Players’ Ring Theatre’s last season’s Late-Night Series on

Without Walls, the dark comedy about an alcoholic baseball an-nouncer with more than a few skeletons in his closet.

‘The Myth of the Father’, produced and directed by Deb Barry, features a stellar cast of both newcomers to and veterans of The Players’ Ring Theatre’s stage, many taking on multiple roles. The fathers and sons of the three highlighted stories are played by Michael Lavoie, Ben Bagley, Tomer Oz, and Alex Pease. Taking on the role of the ‘all-knowing’, blind Greek seer, Tiresius, is Mo Conley. Other not-to-be-missed characters are portrayed by Dominique Salva-cion and Robyn Orfield.

The Myth of the Father is sure to provide a laughter-filled evening and leave you with much to think and talk about after leaving the theatre.

Due to adult language and content, The Myth of the Father may not be suitable for young

audiences. Players’ Ring, 105 Marcy St., Portsmouth. For res-ervations and more information, visit www.playersring.org or call 603-436-8123.

EPPING -The word is out! Leddy

Center’s “oldest established, permanent, floating crap game” in the guise of Frank Loesser’s fable of Broadway’s ‘Guys And Dolls’ is some of the best en-tertainment in the state this summer. Join the celebration of Leddy’s 40th summer present-ing Broadway’s finest musicals.

Is it the cast, spearheaded by the awe-inspiring talents of Jane Button, Don LaDuke, Deirdre Bridge, Ralph Twom-bly, and Paul Gustavson? Is it the brilliant direction for 40 years, by Elaine and Bruce Gatchell? Is it the jaw-dropping vintage New York scenery? Yes, it’s all that and more. The show runs through July 27.

Performances of ‘Guys And Dolls’ at Leddy Center’s air-conditioned, fully acces-sible, and beautiful theater at

nie Soechtig. ‘Fed Up’ is billed as “the film the food industry doesn’t want you to see”. The screening will be followed by a discussion panel featuring no-table UNH professors as well as local authors.

July’s wildcard feature, Thursday, July 24 at the Historic Theater, is also a documentary, a film about Ultrarunning (run-ning distances longer than a marathon) made by local film-makers of Hammer & Saw Films, titled ‘100: Head/Heart/Feet’. The film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring the runner/subject of the film and the filmmakers.

July cinema features actors ranging from Emma Roberts to Woody Allen and from Marion Cotillard to Jeremy Renner — and one of the classic musicals of all time — ‘An American in Paris’. Programming Coordina-tor Chris Curtis says, “There are many exciting films to see at The Music Hall in July. Come join us in one or both of our air-conditioned venues. Get out of the heat and get into some great on-screen stories!”

Installations of some of the boats themselves will be fea-tured, such as the hard-working, yet graceful Piscataqua Wherry that filled the Piscataqua in the 1800s, serving as water-taxis.

The Piscataqua Wherry’s other claim to fame was that it was most likely the boat used by Louis Wagner to row out to the Isles of Shoals to commit the in-famous 1873 Smuttynose mur-ders. A handsome Whitehall

What Can Investors Learn from the All Stars?Baseball’s best players

gathered in Minneapolis this week to participate in

the All-Star Game. If you’re a fan or even a “weekend ath-lete,” you can admire these players for their abilities, even if you — like the vast majority of humanity — can’t hope to duplicate them. But if you’re an investor, you may be able to learn some practi-cal lessons from the All Stars.

So let’s look at a few common All Star traits to see how they might apply to in-vestors:

ConsistencyAll Stars typically don’t

just have a few good weeks or months — they tend to be consistently excellent, year after year. As an inves-tor, you, too, need to strive for consistency. Instead of periodically chasing after “hot” stocks, try to follow a long-term strategy by stay-ing invested in the financial markets, through both “up” and “down” periods, and by rebalancing your holdings, as needed, to reflect changes in

your life.

Ability to avoid errorsEveryone makes mistakes,

but All Stars seem to make fewer of them. Whether it’s fielding balls cleanly, success-fully executing a sacrifice bunt or not walking a player with the bases loaded, All Stars seem to avoid errors while making the right moves at the right time. When you invest, you need to avoid common “errors,” such as investing either too conser-vatively or too aggressively. In-stead of going to either of these extremes, build a portfolio ap-propriate for your risk toler-ance but still capable of helping you reach your goals.

PreparednessAll Stars keep themselves

in great shape and often devel-op additional skills as the years go by, such as developing a new pitch or learning to hit the ball to different parts of the field. By preparing themselves in this way, they can take advantage of opportunities as they arise. As you invest, you will also need to be prepared to take ad-vantage of new opportunities.

One such way to prepare is to have enough liquidity in your portfolio to make appropriate investment moves. In addition to preparing for opportunities, you’ll need to prepare for chal-lenges that could jeopardize your investment strategy. So, for example, you may want to build an emergency fund con-taining six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses. With such a fund in place, you may not have to dip into your long-term investments to pay for short-term needs, such as a major car repair, a new furnace or a big bill from the dentist.

Awareness of limitsNot even the best All Stars

can do everything well. A good “singles hitter,” for instance, won’t waste a lot of effort in trying to hit home runs, while a powerful, but slow, slugger might not attempt to steal a base. Investors have limits, too, based on their sophistication and their financial resources. To illustrate: Some wealthy and highly experienced inves-tors may embark on complex or risky strategies, or purchase

hard-to-understand invest-ments. But these risky tech-niques and complex invest-ments are not for everyone — and smart, “everyday” inves-tors know this and stick with proven strategies and compre-hensible investments.

You may never step foot on a baseball diamond. But as an investor, you can still pick up some “gems” of wisdom from the All Stars.

This article was written by Edward Jones and submitted by Financial Advisor Joseph Mittica. If you would like to reach Mittica, you can do so by calling 603-964-1947.

Dear Computer Lady,How do I convert a Word

document to a PDF? I need to send documents to my clients that can be easily opened. I am using Microsoft Word 2013.

Thanks, Doug

Dear Doug,Converting your Word

document to a PDF file is a good choice when you don’t know what your clients have for soft-ware, since just about any com-puter can read a PDF file. I can even read PDFs on my iPad.

Fortunately for you, no extra software is needed to save a copy of your Word document as a PDF and then send by email.

First, open your document in Word 2013.

Click on the “File” tab in the upper-left corner.

Click on “Export” in the

menu.Under the heading,

“Export”, click, “Create PDF/XPS Document, then in the next section click the square box that says, “Create PDF/XPS”.

You will now be able to select the location you want to save your file to, and be able to change the file name if desired. When you are ready, just click the, “Publish” button to save the PDF version of your document.

Once you export your PDF, you will not be able to make changes to it. You will, however, still be able to make changes to your original Word document, and then simply export it to PDF again. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,I have Microsoft Office

Outlook for my email. When I send an email to a

group of friends, I have to select each person one at a time. Is there a way to save that group of friends so I can send emails to them more quickly?

Thanks, Ron

Dear Ron,Yes, you can easily create

a group in Outlook (and most other email programs) and then just put the name of the group in the “To” section of your email message.

Here is how.1. Open Outlook (the ver-

sion that comes with Microsoft Office)

2. Click on “People” or “Contacts” (depending on what version of Outlook You are using)

3. Click the “New Con-tact Group” button under the “Home” tab. (or click “File” then “New Entry, and click “New Contact Group” for the type of entry)

4. Type a name for your group, then click “Select Mem-bers” to add members from your address book.

When you are finished, click “Save and Close” to save your list.

You can always open the contact list to add or remove members any time you want.Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,

Every time I sit down at my Windows 8 computer, a screen comes up with a picture, the time and date displayed. I have to click on the picture in order to start using my computer.

I don’t need to know the date and time, and I don’t want the extra step of clicking on the picture before I can start using the computer.

Is there any way to skip this step?

Thanks, Gary

Dear Gary,The screen you are describ-

ing sounds like the Windows 8 lock screen, and yes, you can dis-able the lock screen and skip that extra step when starting your computer. The secret is knowing where to find the setting. ;-)

Here is how:1. Tap the windows logo

key on your keyboard, and type, gpedit.msc then, press the enter key on your keyboard. This will open the “Local Group Policy Editor” window.

2. In the left column of the, Local Group Policy Editor, window, click the small triangle to the left of, “Administrative Templates” to expand the menu.

3. In the same manner, expand “Control Panel” and then click on “Personalization”.

4. In the right column of the window, find, “Do not dis-play the lock screen” and double

click on it. A new dialog box will open.

5. In this new dialog box, click to select, “Enabled” then click the “OK” button at the bottom of the dialog box.

Now, when you wake your computer, you will not see the lock screen. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,One of the things that I

don’t like about my new Win-dows 8 computer is that there are so many steps to shut down or even restart the computer.

Is there any way I can put a shortcut to shut down the com-puter on my desktop?

Thanks, Don

Dear Don,Yes, you can put a shut-

down shortcut on your Win-dows 8 desktop.

Here is how:1. On your desktop, right

click on a blank spot, and in the context menu that appears point to, “New” then click on “Short-cut”.

2. A dialog box will appear. In the middle is a box where you can enter the location of your item. In this box, type the follow-ing: shutdown /s /t 0

3. Click the, “Next” button, type a name for your shortcut (Shut Down works for me, but

Rowboat from Kittery Histori-cal & Naval Museum will also be on display, as well as one of the region’s most sought-after vessels --- the nimble Merry Mac sailboat, designed by Ned McIntosh, and popularized during the 1950s. Models of the Gundalow, as well as related ar-tifacts, and artistic renderings of local gundalows will tell the story of these flat-bottomed, car-go-bearing ships that dominated the region’s waters through the early 1900s.

In conjunction with this exhibit, WLHH will be raffling off a Bevin’s skiff. The skiff was donated by Tammi Truax and

family. The Truax family built the skiff as part of the Univer-sity of New Hampshire Marine Docent’s Family Boat Building program. The Bevin’s skiff is a twelve-foot, flat bottom, row-boat with beautiful lines. The four-foot beam allows it to safely carry two adults and a child. The skiff was constructed from marine grade mahogany ply-wood over a mahogany frame and transom. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the opening reception of ‘Water, Wood & Wind: Regional Craft on the Piscataqua.’ The lucky winner will be revealed on August 23 at WLHH during the

closing ceremonies of the Round Island Regatta.

Wentworth Lear Historic Houses is comprised of both the Wentworth-Gardner House and the adjacent Tobias Lear House. PORTSMOUTH -‘Eat It Up: Food Talks!’

will be taking stage as an on-going series of talks at the Sea-coast Repertory Theatre. The series will provide a space for local, regional and national chefs, food writers, brewers, sommeliers, farmers, foragers, and others to showcase their insights into food culture and creation. The goal of the series is to provide the Seacoast com-munity a look into local and national food culture with a

focus on sustainability, artistry, and innovation. Eat It Up aims to provide a space for food en-thusiasts and professionals to experience the passion of each speaker in an interactive and intimate setting.

Each event will feature a guest speaker who will present a 30-45 minute food-focused talk and talk-back on a topic of the speaker’s choosing. The series will occur once monthly starting Monday, July 28 at 7:30 p.m., and will run monthly through December 2014.

“We think the Seacoast has a want and a need for this kind of educational engagement with the food community,” says Evan Mallett of Black Trum-pet. “We really want this to be a community resource as much as it is an entertainment event.”

The show will be co-pro-duced by Evan Mallett, Brian Kelly and Kathleen Cavalaro of eight/one productions, and Knate Higgins of the Seacoast Repertory Theatre. Kelly will host the events, with Mallett as the first guest. Other guests will include Gregg Sessler of Cava, Matt Louis of Moxy, Evan Hennessey of Stages at One Washington, and Mark Segal of

general admission ticketholders. VIP reception at 6:30 p.m.

VIP tickets are $40 and include an exclusive meet and greet featuring personalized hor d’ oeuvres with Chef Mallett with ingredients provided by Dole & Bailey, a pairing generously donated by Smuttynose Brew-ery, and priority seating. Gen-eral Admission tickets are $12 and include the Smuttynose pairing as well. All Industry Workers who provide proof of employment in the industry ( i.e. paystub, etc.) will be given

“Pay-What-You-Want” tickets. Industry tickets are available day of show only and are sub-ject to availability. VIP Tickets are limited to 60, seating is lim-ited and due to high demand, advance purchase is recom-mended.

Tickets may be purchased online at www.seacoastrep.org, in person at 125 Bow Street Portsmouth, NH 03801, or over the phone at 603.433.4472. For more information, contact Knate Higgins at 603-433-4722 or at [email protected].

PORTSMOUTH -Tickets are on sale now

for one of the best bargains in town this summer: the new Left Bank Cabaret series in the Music Hall Loft on Congress Street in downtown Ports-mouth. Beginning on July 25 with the hiphop dancers from Harlem, The Wondertwins, and ending on August 9 with the popular contemporary vo-calist Taylor O’Donnell, the series features six musical acts to reflect a range of highly tal-ented artists.

The Loft will transition into a European inspired night-

club complete with cocktail tables and low lighting. A new menu with signature cocktails, an updated wine list, as well as new small plate offerings will also be making a debut for the Left Bank Cabaret series.

“We’re thrilled to present so many amazing artists in our Left Bank Cabaret series debut this summer — in a unique setting resembling a night-club on the left bank of the Parisian Seine,” says Thérèse LaGamma Deputy Director of Programming/Performing Arts Curator. “I’m especially excited to introduce some phe-

nomenal emerging acts and local favorites who we think are en route to national star-dom. For instance, on Tuesday, July 29 you can hear the beauti-ful pop music of indie harpist/singer-songwriter and YouTube sensation Mikaela Davis and her opening act, the intriguing local favorite Clara Berry and Wooldog.”

Music Hall Season Spon-sors include River House Res-taurant; Carey & Giampa, Real-tors; The Residences at Portwalk Place. Left Bank Cabaret Series Sponsor is That Event Co.
