PORTSMOUTH –The Seacoast Repertory

Theatre launches 2016 with a look behind the joyful, bright-eyed image of jazz pioneer Louis Armstrong to reveal the deeper life of one of America's cultural treasures.

“Satchmo at the Wal-dorf”, directed by seacoast veteran Jeremy Abram, is a drama based on the private audio diaries recorded by Arm-strong over his lifetime. It de-picts a journey much like that of jazz itself, from the bars and brothels of New Orleans to the world's great stages. In addition to his exuberant public image, the play reveals a reflective, sometimes bitter Armstrong,

who cursed fluently and was determined to flesh out his own character for posterity.

The critically acclaimed play was written by Wall Street Journal drama critic Terry Teachout and it premiered in 2011. The story takes place after a 1971 Armstrong perfor-mance at New York's Waldorf Hotel, shortly before his death.

Jeremy Abram, a veteran performer in Seacoast musicals Ain’t Misbehavin’, The Full Monty and Chicago, will be re-turning to Portsmouth from his home in New York to make his Seacoast directing debut.

“Satchmo at the Waldorf” runs January 22 through Feb-ruary 14. Tickets are available

performance skills can study Chekhov or Lessac techniques, perfect monologues for audi-tioning, and learn voiceover techniques and acting for the camera. Workshop fees are $40 each, or $30 if you sign up for 4 or more classes. Financial assis-tance applications are available.

Winter courses for stu-dents include a creative drama workshop on Monday after-noons at 4-5 p.m. for ages 7-12 with Meghann Beauchamp. Creative drama will be held February 29, March 7 and March 14. The fee is $100. Also on Mondays, CJ Lewis will offer a teen acting lab from 5:15-6:45 p.m., January 26 to March 7 for $175. The lab will focus on a variety of different perform-ing techniques including move-ment, voice, classical, comedy and improvisation.

Music for 'Metropolis' will be performed live by Jeff Rapsis, a New Hampshire-based composer and silent film accompanist who performs at venues around the nation.

'Metropolis' (1927), regarded as German director Fritz Lang's masterpiece, is set in a futuristic

city where a privileged elite pursue lives of leisure while the masses toil on vast machines and live deep underground. The film, with its visions of futuristic factories and flying cars, set new standards for visual design and inspired genera-tions of dystopian fantasies from Ridley Scott's 'Blade Runner' to Terry Gilliam's 'Brazil.'

In 'Metropolis,' the story cen-ters on an upper class young man who falls in love with a woman who works with the poor. The tale encompasses mad scientists, human-like robots, underground spiritual movements, and indus-trial espionage, all set in a society divided between haves and have-nots.

Launch Party was held Thurs-day, January 14 at McKinnon’s Supermarket on Lafayette Road. Service Credit Union has signed on as lead sponsor for the project, supporting the fundraising initiative through their $15,750 contribution.

To date, Veterans Count has raised $100,500 from its sponsors, and they are just getting started. These local businesses include: McKin-non’s Supermarkets; Two Guys Smoke Shop; Dunkin’ Donuts Hampton; Margaritaville Foods; Rockingham Electrical Supply Company Inc.; Dom-

The Eagle Parade aims to benefit New Hampshire mili-tary members and their fami-lies, with all event proceeds di-rected toward providing them with emergency funds and aid services. The project centers on a public art exhibit, in which local artists are invited to dec-orate four-and-a-half-foot tall eagle sculptures that will be auctioned off on Veterans Day 2016 to raise money for Veter-ans Count.

Conceived in 2007, Veter-ans Count strives to bring com-prehensive, emergency aid to veterans and their families, and to provide critical and timely fi-nancial assistance and services when no other resource is avail-able, to ensure their dignity, health and overall well-being. The lost footage, discovered in 2008 in an archive in Argentina, has since been added to the existing 'Metropolis,' allow-ing plot threads and characters to be developed more fully.

"'Metropolis' stands as an stunning example of the power of silent film to tell a compelling story without words, and reach across the generations to touch movie-goers from the real future, which means us," said accompa-nist Jeff Rapsis.

To accompany a silent film, Rapsis uses a digital synthesizer to recreate the texture of the full or-chestra. The score is created live in real time as the movie is screened.

Dear Computer Lady,How can I change my desk-

top icons so that they reflect what they are about, a picture of an envelope, a picture of a crochet hook, a planet etc. Thank you, Juliet

Dear Juliet,It is actually quite easy to

change the image of icons on your desktop. 1. Right click on the icon, and click, "Properties" from the context menu that ap-pears. 2. Click on the, "Change Icon" button. Different types of links have that button in differ-ent places, but it is usually on the tab that is first displayed. 3. The, "Change Icon" dialog box will appear. Again, depending on the type of link you are working with, there might be a collection of icons displayed in the window, or you might need to use the,

"Browse" button to find them. 4. Click on the icon you want to use, then click the, "OK" button to close the dialog box and save your changes. There are several files in Windows that contain icons, one is shell32.dll, another is imag-feres.dll and pifmgr.dll. They are located in C: \Windows\System32\. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,I would like to know what

I should buy to improve my graphics and speed while play-ing games, especially GTA5 with all it's super high textures, shad-ows etc. I'm not exactly looking to have a certain brand recom-mended to me, but rather WHAT items I need to buy to improve my system. So, in short, what do I buy in order to speed up my FPS and improve graphics? Is it graph-ic cards? And can you have more

than one graphic card at the same time? Thanks! Kelly

Dear Kelly,The short answer is that you

do, indeed need a powerful graph-ics card. However, you can't just go out and buy one. You first need to know what will work in your computer. I'm assuming that you have a desktop computer (I am not aware of any way to add a graph-ics card to a laptop). You need to do a little research. You need to find out if your motherboard sup-ports additional graphics cards and if the physical case has room for one or more. Motherboards come with different types of slots for cards, find out what yours has. Then, with that information in hand, look for a graphics card with the most onboard RAM you can afford. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,I have gotten myself into

problems by installing programs that are supposed to make my computer operate more efficient-ly. I completely trust your advice. Is registry reviver by Riversoft a safe and reliable program that will do what it advertises to do? If not what program would you sug-gest.? They also offer a program to keep all my driver updates cur-rent. Please Help! Thanks so very much. You are a blessing to so many novice computer learners. Carroll

Dear Carroll,I am not a big fan of pro-

grams that claim to make your computer run faster or more effi-ciently. I am also not a big fan of driver update programs. Most of the time, these programs are just making empty promises so they can sell you their product, and many of them come with toolbars and helpers that slow your com-puter down even more. Instead of installing this type of program, I would suggest a couple of things. First, check for windows updates and install them every month. Windows updates often include driver updates for your computer. Second, run Disk Cleanup on your computer. This is available in all versions of Windows. Just open Windows Explorer, right click on your hard drive, click "Properties" and then click the "Disk Cleanup" button. These two features are already on your computer, won't cost you any money, and won't slow your com-puter down. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,My Dell Inspiron desktop

computer is 6 years old and came with Vista. Now Vista is on the way out. I have saved a lot of family pictures, genealogy and other important stuff on Outlook Mail. I was assured by a friend that a technician can transfer everything to a new computer. I would like to save ALL the things

on Outlook 2007 to my WD 1.5T remote hard drive. I wonder if Is it possible for me to save this to my remote hard drive, just so I don’t lose it all...just in case. If so, how computer savvy must one be? Thank you! Betsy

Dear Betsy,Actually, your Outlook

(Not Outlook Express or Out-look.com, but Microsoft Office Outlook) mail and everything in it is in one file that is easy to backup. All you have to do is find it. Outlook stores all your messages, contacts and calendar entries in one file called a post office file. It ends with .pst. Here is how to find your .pst file: Start Outlook. On the Tools menu, click Options. On the Mail Setup tab, click the Data Files button. Note the path and file name of your .pst file. For example, C: \Exchange\Mailbox.pst indi-cates a .pst file that is named Mailbox.pst located in the Ex-change folder on your drive C. Click Close, click OK, and then click Exit and Log Off on the File menu to quit Outlook. Now that you know where the file is located, you can copy it to your remote hard drive. On the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer. Browse through the files to the location of your .pst file. Drag to copy your .pst file to the location that you want. Elizabeth
