African Leadership Academy (ALA) is a pre-eminent educational institution that seeks

to transform Africa by identifying, developing, and connecting its future leaders. The

Academy was founded on the philosophy that a new generation of ethical, committed

leaders is the key to Africa’s development. ALA seeks to become the training ground

for these future leaders. Each year, ALA draws the most outstanding students from

across Africa to its campus in South Africa for its flagship Two Year Pre-University

program; and every July and August, selected high potential students from across the

world attend the Academy’s Global Scholars’ Program. At ALA, young leaders build a

powerful intellectual foundation and develop their leadership capacity through ALA’s

unique curriculum and learning environment.

The Global Scholars Program (GSP) at African Leadership Academy is a nineteen

day leadership development program for students from all over the world agedbetween 15 and 19 years.

GSP provides a challenging and stimulating environment for emerging leaderswho will collaborate with a diverse group of their peers. It is a logical extension

of the Academy’s mission to develop the next generation of African leaders. Inthis unprecedented era of globalisation, Africa will not develop in a vacuum. The

continent’s future will depend on the connections made between young leadersfrom around the world and their ability to share ideas, identify opportunities and

build dynamic organisations.

GSP prepares future leaders from across the globe to explore their potential to create widespread

positive change. Using the Academy’s unique Entrepreneurial Leadership curriculum, participantsare pushed to discover their true potential, explore South Africa and the African continent, and toexamine models of leadership in a range of spheres.

GSP alumni return to their schools and communities equippedto make an impact and to drive positive change.

The Global Scholars Program differs from other leadership

development offerings through the depth of experience we

provide. African Leadership Academy is the leading pan-African

educational institution in the world, with an outstanding track

record of connecting the continent’s most exceptional young

leaders with each other and with opportunities across the

globe.

in just three weeks. We have managed to distill key learning objectives

from our unique two year program into an intensive 3 week period and

Our goal as GSP Educators is to support and guide students on their

leadership journey and to expose students to a variety of experiences

both inside and outside of the classroom in South Africa, which will inspire

GSP is a unique program in that the world of secondary education is filled

with opportunity for service learning and/or community work however,

Entrepreneurial Leadership goes a step further. It walks students through

a process that requires that they invest themselves in the use of their

knowledge, skills and networking abilities to do more than just visit

and serve. They partner, listen, and deliver based on the needs of the

community and most importantly, they then walk away, leaving the full

ownership of their proposed solutions to community partners without any

GSP is unique in all its aspects as a summer camp. The activities of the

camp have a way of impacting participants. The Soweto and Johannesburg

city tours bring alive the rich South African history that one only read about

in the history books. The excursions add a lot more emphasis to South

Africa’s culture. The life, bravery, courage and selfless determination of

the iconic leader, the late Nelson Mandela, becomes more vivid throughseminal readings and viewings.

Experientials teach life lessons and values that impact participants in their academic, professional and

private lives. The rich GSP curriculum and the intensity of the program as a whole encourage participants to

Our goal as GSP Educators is to support and guide students on their

During GSP all participants are accommodated on the African Leadership Academy campus in

Honeydew, a quiet suburb on the outskirts of Johannesburg. Our campus is fully residential and

boasts all modern amenities including wi-fi. GSP participants sleep two to a room with separate

dormitories for boys and girls.

All meals are provided in our dining hall which caters to a range of dietary preferences and

requirements including vegetarian, kosher, halaal, gluten free and vegan. Late meal options are

available during Ramadan.

At African Leadership Academy we place student welfare above all

other considerations. We provide all participants with private ground

transport throughout their stay in South Africa, including airport

transfers to and from the Academy campus.

Participants are accommodated at the ALA campus in Honeydew,

Johannesburg for the duration of the program. Our campus has a strict

access policy and is guarded 24 hours a day by a full complement of

security officers. There is an electrified perimeter fence and cameras

throughout the campus.

GSP includes numerous excursions and visits to sites aroundJohannesburg. As part of the Academy’s security protocols, all sites

are visited in advance by our risk management team to ensure that

the environment is safe and suitable; additionally our teams adhere to

stringent process to maximise the welfare of all participants.

GSP participants are required to obtain travel insurance that is valid in

South Africa as a condition of enrolment in the program.

A registered nurse and the school physician are on call to tend to

any medical emergency. The Academy is located four kilometres (2.5

miles) away from Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital a leading private medical

facility in South Africa. Facilitators have a first aid kit for all off campus

activities and excursions.

GSP participants can join early morning group exercise sessions run

by a team of facilitators or they can exercise around campus at their

leisure.

GSP is a truly global experience, participants will meet and work with

fellow participants, educators and speakers from all over the world.

Each individual will bring with them their unique perspectives to each

interaction, contributing to the cultural melting pot from which will

emerge a cohort of enlighted global leaders.

Global CommunityThis is international.

I attended GSP before moving to a new school in a different

country. My GSP experience changed and benefited me

especially because I was able to apply the Entrepreneurial

Leadership concepts and thinking strategies to navigate

my transition into a new environment. GSP was an eye

opener for me.

GSP is a life-changing experience, and the best journey

I have ever had so far. The GSP experience is a short

sample of the life train. We celebrated diversity, worked

in houses, shared ideas, were inspired by African leaders,

and collaborated to develop and deliver the solution to

the need we identified.

My school in England is very international but I can hand

on heart say that I have never been so close to and so

at ease with people from such diverse backgrounds. The

best aspect in my opinion was the way we bridged the

gaps between us, working together for the first time in a

large group and then being split into completely random

groups that were very different from the other groups

we had, thereby giving us the opportunity to work with

different people each time and get to know them.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS

Julia heard about GSP through her friends – graduates of ALA,who she met during the Yale Young Global Scholars Program.They told her about ALA and what and specifically about theGlobal Scholars Program which she could be a part of.She later applied and was accepted. She was excited to havebeen accepted as she is very passionate about changing theworld and being involved in programs that would enable her tomake that change.

Julia values the lessons she learned while being at GSP, and hasbeen inspired to use what she has learned in college going forth,as well as in her career.

Julia founded both the organisations she is a part of in 2012.Pretty Purposeful is a non-profit she founded to help providefunding and raise awareness for child birth injuries in SierraLeone, Kenya and Malawi. Youth Corp is a network of youth-runorganisations, such as non-profits, businesses and initiativesthat seek to encourage youth to aspire to make a difference by

starting up organisations headed by the youth.

Her experience summed up in her own words: “This experiencehas been amazing. I can honestly say it has been life-

changing and I have learned so much about South Africa and

that leadership is really about taking ownership as a leader.

You can’t control others and what happens around you, but it

is all about your response-ability to situations.”

Dumi heard about GSP through United World Colleges (UWC),the school he attended at the time. He applied and was acceptedto be a part of what he says was “a lot of fun”.

He valued the fact that he was able to learn and interact witha diverse group of people from all over the world. It was alsoan opportunity to learn about South Africa’s rich history. Theexperientials and excursions were another aspect he foundenjoyable, as his perceptions and way of thinking were beingchallenged.

Dumi decided to join the 2015 GSP sessions as an intern duringhis summer break. He was glad to be back to play a role in thelives of others and to show gratitude to ALA for what the GSPexperience taught him.

Dumi is passionate about healthcare and is currently a Biologystudent at Duke University and hopes to work in the healthcareindustry once he completes his studies.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS

Kelvin learned about GSP through the UJIMA Subukia ScholarshipFund, a charitable organization which operates a scholarshipprogram for secondary school students in Kenya. Kelvin appliedand he attended GSP in 2011, a year before he graduated fromhigh school.

In 2012 he started his own company in Nairobi using theentrepreneurial skills he learned at ALA after identifying aneed in his community soon after he returned home. SunriseTracking provides vehicle tracking systems for individuals andcompanies that can be fully managed through a linked mobilephone. His latest innovative addition to his system is the abilityto immobilize a vehicle via text message.

Kelvin says GSP was a ‘brain-opener’ that allowed him to learnand fully explore his leadership and entrepreneurial potential andaddress an issue in his community. Since its inception, SunriseTracking has assisted hundreds of vehicle owners to manageand secure their assets through a mobile phone applicationfor both tracking and CCTV surveillance. “With the leadershipskills I acquired, I managed to be an effective change-maker

who transformed society positively.”

Nana Ama was interested in the Global Scholars Program whilstattending Loyola Jesuit College in Nigeria. The Global ScholarsProgram offered a chance to learn about African LeadershipAcademy.

The experience she had as part of the program was anenlightening one for Nana Ama. She had the opportunity todevelop entrepreneurial skills through the EntrepreneurialLeadership curriculum, which composed of experientials thatenforced critical thinking.

She was able to identify her passions and interests which sheharnessed when she eventually attended ALA. Nana Ama is abeliever of doing well for her country and was excited to use thelessons she learnt to their maximum potential. GSP was a greatpath for Nana Ama to develop and grow as a future leader.

She takes initiative on a lot of projects, one being MUNATICS,which she co-founded as a student enterprise at ALA.MUNATICS sought to improve ethics education in schools and

business environments. She also developed a keen interest inyouth employment as she believes is key to the prosperity ofthe African continent.

She is currently enrolled at the University of Toronto and hopesto study International Business and Law. She also hopes toinvest in vocational training through the establishment of a topclass training school in Ghana that would train young peoplein developing skills in bead making, catering, hairdressing andfashion design. She is keen to invest in young people who haveentrepreneurial potential and help under-privileged children inGhana and Nigeria.

GSP seeks dynamic, motivated high school students between the ages of 15 and 19years from across the world who are thrilled at the prospect of an intense program inwhich they will develop as global leaders, contribute value to a social venture and buildlasting friendships.

Each year we are delighted to welcome participants from partner schools and youthorganisations from around the world. Students can enrol in GSP as part of a school groupof 2 or more students. Schools that send a group of five more students are allocated a spot in the Academy’shighly regarded Educator Program – a four week professional development opportunityfor educators from around the world that runs parallel to GSP.

Prospective participants are asked to complete a series of short essays outlining theirleadership experience to date and their motivation for applying to the Global ScholarsProgram.

Applicants must be aged between 15 and 19 years at the time of attending GSP.

The application for admission to GSP is available online at www.alasummer.org/apply

The full program fee is $4,200 of which a $500 deposit is required at the time ofregistration, with the balance due before the program commences. A strict refund policyapplies and will be made available at the time of registration. Payment plans can bearranged on request.

Limited financial aid is available for students with demonstrated need, the financial aidapplication form is made available on request to admitted participants.

Please note that financial aid is preferentially awarded to African students and is cappedat $1,500 per participant.

There are opportunities for interested individuals and organizations to sponsor GSPparticipants. The Academy can match interested sponsors with students who havedemonstrated financial need. Alternatively, sponsoring organizations can nominate theirown Global Scholars, provided they meet the admissions criteria.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and close on 30 April 2015. You will receivea final admissions decision within two weeks of submitting your completed application

and paying the deposit. If you are not admitted to GSP, then you will receive a refund onthe deposit of $450.

Each GSP session is limited to 60 participants. A waiting list will become effective oncethe class number has been reached. As such interested applicants are encouraged toapply early to avoid disappointment.
