Jill Perttula,MSED Literacy Specialist

This week, Graduate Studies introduc-es Literacy student Jill Perttula. Jill

just started in the program this fall and, as a graduate student, she hopes to gain valuable knowledge and experience in the field of lit-eracy education. She is from Ottawa, Ontar-io, Canada and completed her teaching de-gree in secondary school English and History from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Ed-ucation at the University of Toronto. While at the University of Toronto, she received the R.J. McMaster award for outstanding work in the intermediate/senior division of En-glish education. After graduation from the University of Toronto, Jill taught secondary school English in Norfolk, England. Teach-ing in England encouraged Jill’s interest in literacy education due to the fact that she encountered secondary school students who were struggling with basic reading and writ-ing skills. She was thrilled to be accepted to the program at SUNY Potsdam, as she hopes to become a reading teacher in New York State in the future.

We are pleased to announce that Jill has also joined the Graduate Studies team, where she will take on a leadership role in the creation of a graduate student ’blog. In addition, she will be involved in the administration of so-cial media and the creation of newsletter con-tent. We welcome her to the team, and we look forward to her contributions!
