• MStar and GS have been working together

successfully for over 2 years.

• Over 1.5M STB already shipped together o Proving both Mstar and GS teams work together well.

o MStar complements the excellent GS R&D teams.

• Today we are supporting GS SIP projects o GSN / MStar sip with lcs1 is in MP for GS in Bangladesh

TV Trends

• 4K is in the news – but not taking off just yet

o MStar is the world leader in 4K, having shipped over 20M units in the first 9

months of 2014. No one else has shipped any significant volume

o But even 20M units is small.

• (Mstar ships around 200M units of TV chip per year)

o Major 4K markets so far have been China Domestic and USA

o Other markets have very small deployment of 4K TV so far.

• Ramp expected 2016 and 2017 as Panel prices level with HD panels

• SMART is the Buzz for 2015 o Market has been Fragmented …

• But Software standards such as HbbTV and HTML5 are becoming

standards.

o Today we see a major leap forward in Connectivity between IP and

Broadcast


Key Future Technologies

• 2015 - is about SMART and Connectivity o HTML5

o Hybrid Broadcast Broadband - linking the two worlds together

o Browser based UI

o Wifi

o PowerLine

o 4K TV (people have to own 4K TVs before they can use a 4K STB)

• 2016 - is about SMARTER and 4K o 4K STB begins

• 2017 - 4K o 4K STB takes off


Consumer Trends: Content

• Content is Key. o Users will pay to get the content they want.

• And pay again to get it WHEN they want it

• Consider micropayments for catch up services, to get what you want

when you want it.

o Quantity of Content is more important than Quality of Content.

• Box sets – previous shows – series wind back, catch up TV

• Better to have multiple HD channels showing the same show at

different times, or companion content, instead of one UHD at a fixed

time.

• Deliver the right content – when the user wants it

and where he wants it !


Content Anywhere

• Users expect to view their content anywhere o Multi-Screen, Multi-Room, On the Move

• Increased need for Technology o DRM – Networking – Transcoding - storage

• The UI is vital to the UX o Increased need for TV and STB High level software,

o TV must be the HUB if Operator wants to stay in control of the user

• Partnerships needed to cross boundaries to mobile. o MStar –Mediatek merger is a good example.


The Importance of the TV

• The TV is key – it’s the last link to the EYEBALL o Consumer can source change AWAY from the STB.

• The customer does not sit in front of the STB, he sits in front of the TV!

• So you need to make sure you’re your content always has the opportunity to be in front of the TV viewer

• TV EPG can have Tricolor channels even if no Tricolor satellite dish is connected to the TV. o We can display Tricolor Satellite STB content in the TV Terrestrial EPG

• So when the user is browsing the TV Terrestrial EPG the TV can suggest content available from the Satellite STB. The user chooses the Tricolor channel and the TV automatically switches to HDMI content to watch the Tricolor content. Or streams the video from a Tricolor Box in another room.

o MStar TV solutions can enable these features on Smart TV


Search and Recommendation.

• Users want to find content quickly. o Need to make sure the user is guided to the Tricolor content.

o Even if the user is not currently using the Tricolor STB!

• Social Networks are increasingly important o Chatting about what you saw on TV is a social activity.

o Use social networks to push more viewers to Tricolor content through viral

social network activity

o MStar partners can provide this functionality for use in our HTML TV UI

• EPG is the centre point o Forward and Backward EPG – pulling content from IP sources.

o Linking the EPG from the STB TV and Mobile device.

• The hardware technologies exist… o WiFi - 4K – Big CPU – Powerline… its all easy …

• The investment needed today is Software. o Industry Standards can help

• HbbTV – OIPF – HTML5

o But developing all this from zero is a lot of work.

• Mstar has invested in software components which

GS can use to speed up development.
