the English Graduate student continued the call for collective bargaining rights forming the “Graduate Students’ Union (GSU)”; GSU grew beyond English Department by 1964 Spring and set out eight issues to push the University to address that included: 1) formal communication between graduate students and faculty; 2) re-establishment of “thesis only registration”; 3) an end to the requirement that graduate students be continuously enrolled in school; 4) a demand to either reduce tuition or increase salaries to cover tuition; 5) higher wages to help cover the costs of a “minimum standard of living” for married students

the GSU President, Vice-President, and Corresponding Secretary all resigned with an open letter to its members after divided battles over the fight for its official recognition in 1964 Fall. In 1965 Fall, working with the Graduate School and the Dean’s Office, ASUW created a Joint Committee on Graduate Programming to survey graduate students and discuss the creation of a graduate student social organization that could respond to student concerns without granting them collective bargaining rights. But the members of the committee were appointed by GPAs.
