INFRASTRUCTUREPROVIDING GOOD VIBES IS YOUR JOB. PROVIDING GOOD TRANSPORT ROUTES IS OURS.

INFRASTRUCTURERAIL BRIDGE REPLACEMENT IN CHEXBRES

THREE BRIDGES, ONE WEEKEND AND 56 HOURS OF HIGH-PRECISION WORK

As part of its extensive infrastructure program, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) regularly inspects the engineering struc-tures along its routes. If necessary, dam-aged structures are replaced – as was the case in Chexbres near Lausanne, where three old rail bridges were identified. The

design work was performed by Gruner Wepf AG in partnership with Stucky Ltd, which assumed responsibility for on-site supervision. With the first two bridges completed in 2016, November 2017 saw replacement of the third, which is located in the center of Chexbres village.

The same concept was applied for all three structures: the replacement works were carried out in the course of a single weekend, starting on Friday evening with closure of the rail lines. Within 56 hours, the existing track and

bridge were removed, prefabricated supports and the new steel bridges pre-cision-installed, and the missing track relaid. The painstaking preparations and practiced teams were the decisive fac-tor in ensuring that the bridge replace-ment works went to plan and the rail section could punctually reopen to traf-fic on Monday morning.

INFRASTRUCTUREREPAIRS TO URBAN FREEWAY IN ST. GALLEN

ROAD REHABILITATION UNDER OPERATING CONDITIONS

After 30 years in service, the urban freeway in St. Gallen is now due for renewal. Since it opened in 1987, a substantial mainte-nance backlog has accumulated along the over 10 km section of the A1 freeway. The overall project covers some 150 individual structures and facilities, including four freeway interchanges, numerous bridges, underpasses, overpasses, retaining walls and noise barriers. All tunnels and the operating and safety systems will also be refurbished.

Renewal of the section between the St. Gallen Winkeln and Neu-dorf interchanges is likely to take five years. The main works are scheduled to commence at the start of 2020. The spatial con-straints and need to keep four to five traffic lanes permanently open present a huge challenge. Gruner was mandated by the Swiss Federal Roads Office to develop the maintenance concept and action plan, administer the public-sector tendering procedure and supervise site operations up to commissioning. This will be our contribution to a safe and trouble-free operation of the urban freeway over the next 15 to 20 years.

GENERAL PLANNINGCAR SHOWROOM EXTENSION

EXQUISITE SALES PAVILION FOR EXCLUSIVE VEHICLES

The Niki Hasler car dealer in Basel has represented the luxury Ferrari brand in north-western Switzerland for many years. New customer requirements and activities such as motor racing or the Ferrari Classiche restoration / mainte-nance service necessitated extension of the existing build-ing. Top priority was given to functional performance and a plain, aesthetic architecture reflecting Ferrari’s clear-cut formal language. Gruner’s mandate for the sales pavilion covered construction management and building physics as well as structural and room acoustics.

Designed by Diener & Diener, the new two-story pavilion features glazed, light-colored fair-faced concrete. A glass front in the otherwise blank white facade affords views of the showroom. The interior fittings and furnishings are exclusively inspired by the Ferrari brand. Even the Mediter-ranean-style roof terrace takes its cue from the iconic Ital-ian brand. A rotating automobile elevator acts as an attrac-tive and efficient link between the individual spaces and levels. Niki Hasler has been receiving his customers in the new Ferrari pavilion since the end of 2017.

GENERAL PLANNING SCHAUSPIELHAUS ZÜRICH

NEW INFRASTRUCTURE WORTHY OF A THEATER OF THIS STANDING

Schauspielhaus Zürich ranks among the most prestigious theaters in the German-speaking world. The “Pfauen” building hosted the world premiere of some of Bertolt Brecht’s most important plays and the first performance of numerous dra-mas by Max Frisch and Friedrich Dürrenmatt. To this very day, the theater basks in the artistic aura of outstanding authors, directors, actors and actresses.

The project began in 2017 and will be keeping us busy until 2020. The scope of the work – refurbishing the building’s technical installations and service elevator and renovating the stage management system when no productions are running – has not changed since we tendered for this contract.

Once the project had been approved, the construction ser-vices were put out to tender and procured during the first half of 2018. This paved the way for the refurbishment of the first part of the building services installations and service elevator for the Pfauen auditoriums during the theater’s summer break. Preparatory work for renovation of the stage management system was carried out at Schiffbau. Temporary arrangements were made for tenanted areas such as the restaurant, shops, medical practices and galleries.

As the architect and coordinator, we ensure that planning and site supervision work complies with quality, deadline and cost requirements. We contracted a Zurich-based architecture prac-tice to provide a local site management presence on our behalf during construction work.

BUILDING SERVICES ENGINEERINGUNIVERSITY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL, ZURICH (KISPI)

A PIONEER IN HIGHLY SPECIALIZED PEDIATRIC MEDICINE FOR THE PERIOD FROM BIRTH TO FULL GROWTH

The University Children’s Hospital in Zurich is the largest insti-tution of its kind in Switzerland and one of the leading centers for pediatric and adolescent medicine anywhere in Europe. The Kispi offers a full range of medical and surgical treatment for children, from the time they are born up to the time they reach their legal age.

Due for completion by 2022, a new child-friendly hospital in Zurich Lengg will provide state-of-the-art facilities in an attrac-tive and peaceful setting. As part of a consortium with archi-tects Herzog & de Meuron and acting as senior construction manager, Gruner is overseeing the design and construction of the new acute hospital and neighboring teaching, laboratory and research center.

Our aim as building services engineers is to create a comfort-able, hygienic indoor environment in line with the complex space allocation plan. The use of digital design tools allows the efficient coordination of spatial and technical criteria with all project par-ties at the relevant stages of design – and long before the start on site. Adopting an integral approach to the various building services systems, we explore all aspects of energy efficiency while paying due attention to cost-effectiveness and sustain- ability throughout the life cycle. We thus create the conditions for young patients at the University Children’s Hospital in Zurich to receive the best possible care in a child-friendly environment.

BUILDING SERVICES ENGINEERINGSCHLOSS SCHADAU, THUN

SCHLOSS SCHADAU REFURBISHMENT TO CREATE BIGGEST DINING ROOM AND PARLOR IN THUN

The time-honored Schloss Schadau in Thun is one of Swit-zerland’s best-known Neo-Renaissance buildings. Dating from the mid-nineteenth century, the prestigious edifice houses a popular restaurant with banqueting halls. Unknown to most guests, however, time is taking its toll on the pala-tial structure. The now critical condition of some wall / ceiling areas and the building services installations has prompted the City of Thun authorities to embark on the refurbishment and restoration of the building.

This will include modernization of all catering areas and M&E systems. Also planned is an additional kitchen on the ground floor and the use of previously inaccessible spaces. Among various other measures, nine guest rooms, each with a sep-arate wet area, will be installed on the upper stories. Gruner is responsible for the building services design – which, due to the conditions placed on the historic landmark building, is proving a tricky operation.

To facilitate performance of the refurbishment works, the showpiece building will remain closed until spring 2019. We are doing everything to ensure that, after that, Schloss Schad- au will awake from its slumbers with a new lease of life.

STRUCTURAL DESIGNGOLFPARK HOLZHÄUSERN

TEEING UP FOR SUCCESS

Holzhäusern has been a golfing venue for over 20 years. Migros Cooperative Lucerne has fully modernized the golf course and invested heavily in improving the infrastructure. After the three-year revamp, the Golfpark Holzhäusern with its breathtaking views of Lake Zug and the Rigi massif is fit for the future.

The Academy building now unites all the golf-related facili-ties, e.g. changing rooms, shop, fitness suite and adminis-tration, that had previously been spread over three buildings. It also houses a driving range with 30 stalls on two levels. The filigree, two-story, reinforced-concrete and timberwork structural frame supports a stunning multilayered facade assembly with space-forming arcades. The existing restau-rant building was fully renovated and a three-level terrace added. The modernization project also included the erection of a greenkeeping building, completed in early 2018.

The required provision for fall protection in the upper-story driving stalls proved a particular technical challenge. Given that a solution without balustrades was needed, we opted for a steelwork assembly with safety net, such as that used for helipads. Empirical investigations also fed into the design process.

STRUCTURAL DESIGNBALOISE PARK, BASEL

NEW LANDMARK NEAR BASEL’S MAIN STATION

The Baloise Park project close to Basel’s main (SBB) station is being developed by the Baloise Group and is scheduled for completion by 2020. The ensemble comprises a hotel tower, two office buildings and a public plaza. The three buildings bear the signature of three distinguished archi-tectural practices: Miller & Maranta, Diener & Diener and Valerio Olgiati. Gruner is developing the structural design for the architecturally sophisticated hotel block and the new corporate headquarters.

The first development phase, in progress since the summer of 2017, is the tower, which houses a 260-room five-star hotel plus 600 office workplaces for third-party tenants. Standing 89 m tall, this building will be the highest in Baloise Park and the visually dominant element. It is adjoined by a training center and the new Baloise Group headquarters with a total of 700 workplaces. The imposing, fair-faced concrete exterior will lend the head office building a strong and prestigious presence. The new buildings frame a pub-lic plaza that poses a further structural challenge: Located below this open space is a ballroom with a column-free area of 24 × 33 m, created through the use of prestressed in- situ-concrete transfer beams.

SAFETYNEW STADE DE LA TUILIÈRE, LAUSANNE

A VENUE TAILOR-MADE FOR THE AUTHENTIC SOCCER EXPERIENCE

A new ground is currently under construc-tion for soccer club FC Lausanne-Sport. Based on English models, it takes the form of a soccer-only stadium, rectangular in shape, with open corner entrances reminiscent of a sporting trophy. Overall, the new Stade de la Tuilière will accom-modate some 12,000 fans. Plans also exist to use the pitch area for holding concerts and other major events with up to 20,000 visitors.

The foundation-stone-laying ceremony took place shortly before the end of 2017. The first match in the new stadium is scheduled for the summer of 2019. The first kickoff will, however, be preceded by the implementation of a comprehensive safety and fire protection concept. To prepare for this, we have already under- taken extensive planning and coordina-tion, and defined the necessary safety and fire protection measures for the stadium. The adoption of our structural, technical and organizational recommen-dations will eliminate all worries about match day safety.

SAFETYGERMAN RAIL LINES ON SWISS TERRITORY

ENHANCED SAFETY FOR CROSS-BORDER PASSENGER TRAVEL AND FREIGHT SHIPMENT

The German and Swiss rail networks include several cross-border sections around the cities of Basel, Schaff-hausen and Constance. Under a state agreement between the Grand Duchy of Baden and the Swiss Confederation dating from 1852, Deutsche Bahn (Ger-man Federal Railways) operates a num-ber of rail lines on Swiss territory in the Cantons of Basel-Stadt, Schaffhausen and Thurgau.

Gruner has been commissioned by Deutsche Bahn to handle a wide range of safety issues on these sections. Apart from creating a comprehensive safety management system, the required mea-

sures include the development of fire safety concepts for various station buildings, risk analyses compliant with the Swiss Major Accidents Ordinance, emergency operations planning and reg-ular emergency drills. Our joint aim is to ensure safe passenger travel and freight shipment, irrespective of national borders.

FIRE PROTECTIONBAGGAGE SORTING SYSTEM, ZURICH AIRPORT

MODERNIZATION AND SAFETY UPGRADE FOR TRANSPORT HUB

Zurich Airport is the Swiss gateway to the world. Over 29 million people now travel via Switzerland’s largest airport each year. And the numbers are rising, with 2017 recording a year-on-year jump of around 1.7 million passengers. To ensure that the infra-structure keeps pace with this growth, the facilities at Zurich Airport are constantly evolving.

One focal point of this development is Zone A. The existing baggage sorting system, which is located at the heart of the airport, directly next to Terminal 1, is being refurbished and extended, and an early baggage store added. Here, Gruner was entrusted with all design work and coordination for the building services along with the fire safety planning. We collaborated closely with Zurich Airport’s fire safety expert in the development of a fire safety concept geared to the building code protection targets and validated by engineer-ing methods (fire development simulation). This verifica-tion allows the approx. 25,000 m2 baggage sorting hall to be designed as a single fire compartment. A full-coverage fire-alarm and sprinkler installation plus sophisticated smoke extraction system vouch for the required safety standards.

One particular feature of the project relates to the fire engi-neering aspects of the structural design, which was specially developed to allow for major upward extension of the bag-gage sorting hall during a later development phase.

FIRE PROTECTIONLIDL DEUTSCHLAND HEADQUARTERS, BAD WIMPFEN

GUARANTEED ALL-ROUND PROTECTION WITHIN ONLY A FEW MONTHS

The spa town of Bad Wimpfen in the German Federal State of Baden-Württemberg is set to become the home of Lidl Deutschland’s new headquarters, housing 1,500 work- places. The scheme targets a sustainable symbiosis of building and landscape. The sizeable development is designed as a terraced ensemble of five separate blocks which – through planted roof areas, intermediate spaces and internal court-yards – are permeated by the greenery of the setting. The new facility reads as a group of stacked, landscaped plateaus that rise up from the site, merge into a coherent structure and respond to the immediate surroundings through subtle dif-ferences in height. The preliminary excavations for the up to 18 m deep pit on the approx. 3.8 ha lot will require the move-ment of some 450,000 cubic meters of soil.

Gruner has developed an integral fire safety concept for the complex. The key challenge consisted in drawing up an over- arching fire safety concept covering the diverse requirements of the special building regulations for parking lots, for sales out-lets, for places of assembly and even for industrial buildings. The location of numerous facilities on the basement levels also imposed particular demands. At the same time, we had to find ways of compensating for the many deviations from the afore-mentioned statutory requirements or, alternatively, supply engineering verifications of compliance with the building code protection targets and cost-effectiveness criteria.

ENVIRONMENTBAD ZURZACH EASTERN BYPASS

TRAFFIC CALMING AND UPGRADING OF HISTORIC LANDMARK VILLAGE CENTER

The Canton of Aargau implements systematic measures to divert traffic away from historic urban cores. A new eastern bypass is also planned for Bad Zurzach to keep traffic out of the center. The two-lane road runs through a nature reserve on the south-eastern fringes of the town and disappears into a tunnel in the built-up areas. The planned bypass will boost the appeal of the little town on the River Rhine, both as a residential location and as a regional development hub.

Gruner was commissioned by the Canton of Aargau Civil Engineering Department to prepare an environmental impact assessment and, at the same time, to perform a detailed soil and contamination survey. The recommended ecological mitigation and compensation measures included, among other things, the uncovering and widening of a nearby stream – a measure now in progress. In executing our ecological site supervision mandate, we will use our experience during the several-year construction period to minimize the impact of the works on the environment and local residents.

COMPLEX BUILDING PHYSICS AND ACOUSTIC CHALLENGE INVOLVING VARIOUS HOSPITAL AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES UNDER THE SAME ROOF

As the healthcare market becomes more competitive, patient comfort is gradually becoming as significant a consideration as planning requirements. This makes acoustic comfort in the form of appropriate sound protection between rooms and unobtrusive room acoustics even more important.

With specialist planning support from the client, designers and contractor, it is possible to do the groundwork for the vari-ous functional units within a hospital in good time, then scale, optimize and plan the necessary measures.

We oversaw planning for the noise protection, thermal insu-lation and interior and exterior sound protection and drew up a matching room acoustics design. In the course of inten-sive dialogue with the various partners in the project, poten-tial solutions were devised, optimized and finally developed through to implementation. As a result, we were able to make our contribution to the new, efficient and contemporary hos-pital complex.

Stucky Ltd has been entrusted by Tajikistan’s state-run energy provider, Barki Tojik, with the technical supervision of the rehabilitation program for the Nurek hydropower plant. The nine Francis turbines were initially designed for a capacity of 2,950 MW. However, due to the frequent breakdowns at the 40-year-old plant, only 70 % of this capacity is currently achieved. The ageing generators now have to do be shut down at regular intervals for repair.

The comprehensive rehabilitation project will secure the long-term energy production at the Nurek plant. A capacity increase to a maximum of 3,375 MW is also planned. These measures will guarantee a reliable electricity supply for the population and economy of the Central Asian country, with surplus power due to be exported. The project additionally includes investments in the safety of the dam. Management of the design and tendering procedure for this megaproject will require a supreme team effort on the part of Gruner if the tight deadlines are to be met.

ENERGY SPITALLAMM ARCH DAM, LAKE GRIMSEL

A NEW ARCH DAM WILL REPLACE THE EXISTING DAM AT THE LARGE GRIMSEL RESERVOIR

The Spitallamm dam project, one of the two dams forming the Grimsel lake, consists in replacing the existing arch gravity dam by a new double curvature arch dam. The existing dam, built in the years 1928 to 1932, presents signs of ageing. For this reason, the owner, Kraftwerke Oberhasli AG (KWO), in agreement with the federal authority, has decided to build a new dam immediately downstream of the existing one. The new arch dam with a concrete volume of 215,000 m3 and a height of 113 m will be built from 2019 to 2025. The crest of the new dam will be at the same level as the existing dam. The existing dam will stay in place and will be impounded on both sides thanks to a hydraulic bypass tunnel.

Stucky’s engineering mandate, following a previous contract for the preparation of the tender documents, includes fol-lowing services: owner’s support during the bidding phase, construction design of the dam and preparation of as built drawings.

OUR VALUESWE ARE FULLY AWARE OF OUR RESPONSIBIL- ITY TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIETY

The Gruner Group’s Ethics Charter expresses how we view our responsibilities as an engineering and design company. Apart from adhering to the legal framework in all countries in which we operate, we are bound by clear principles: these include equal opportunities and diversity, the provision of safe and healthy workplaces, transparent communication and ethical conduct, even under commercial pressure. We expect of ourselves, our managers and our employees that these principles be lived out and implemented every day – and ever more efficiently as each day passes.

OUR COLLABORATIONWE OFFER WORK WITH GOOD PROSPECTS

We ensure that our company is constantly developing. We invest in modern tools and a pleasant working environment. We offer training courses that promote technical expertise and the various competencies – including communication skills, which our employees need in order to work with customers on an equal footing. We train our executives with the aim of turning them into better bosses. Although we are evolving, one thing remains unchanged: We are a company that oper-ates globally, but which preserves its family spirit.

SOME THINGS CANNOT BE PLANNED.

BUT YOUR CAREER CAN.Many things can go wrong in the daily work routine – especially in the complex world of construction, with its many imponderables and interdependencies. So it’s good when you have a company behind you to back you up. And it’s good when, thanks to colleagues, good advice isn’t hard to come by. And it’s good when a company prepares its employees for all kinds of challenges, both great and small.

This is how the plan works.

OUR COMMITMENTWE OFFER SUPPORT, INVESTMENT AND HANDS-ON ASSISTANCE

The knowledge and skills of our staff are our company’s most valuable asset. Our employees belong to a larger network of professionals working in construction, engineering and related disciplines. It thus makes perfect sense for us to invest in this network: in research projects, in partnerships with higher education institutes, in talent development and in the working groups of industry and professional associations. In honoring our role in society, we also provide hands-on assistance, for instance through our long-standing engagement as expert consultant in projects in mountain regions. Last year’s Gruner

Christmas present went to the Gredig family, who run a farm in Seewis in the Canton of Graubünden. The Graubünden fam-ily was visited by a delegation of Gruner Group trainees, who spent time working on the farm and putting their theoretical knowledge into practice. This was just one small contribution towards a better quality of life and working environment.
