A little history lesson:

GRSP was born in 1946Founded on WWII experienceBasic idea was to give young adults a chance to broaden world understanding and peace through an scholastic environmentFirst class was 4 students

Where the $ come from

First class: $1 per Ga. Rotarian ($4000)Now each Rotarian: $7 as part of dues.Early in program, clubs paid all of the students expensesEndowment Fund ~1985 to helpNow part by clubs and part by EF based on EF earnings.

Where the $ go (Actual amounts to be

distributed later.)

The “overhead” is the office and staff in Savannah. A small amount goes to education and awards (such as Will Watt Fellow pins) The student budget is the big part! Trustees receive no compensation

Leadership

GRSP is governed by a Board of Trustees made up of Officers , Directors, Trustees, Advisory Trustees, and Trustees Emeritus Officers: Chair, Vice Chair, Sec., Treas.,District Chairs, Parliamentarian. Directors: 2 per Rotary District plus IPDG, DG, and DGE

Trustee Expectations

Coordinate activities between students and sponsoring clubs Lead clubs in selection of students Present GRSP programs at club meetings Promotion of Endowment Fund Attend 3 GRSP meetings each year

GRSP Meeting Expectations

Trustees are expected to attend the three meetings each year: Annual Meeting in July Student Selection Meeting in Jan or Feb Student Conclave in Aug or Sept

(Must be excused in writing by Dist Chair)

Trustees and Clubs

Present educational program on GRSP at least once per year Make up at assigned clubs often enough that members associate you with GRSP Maintain contact with student host families to know how they are getting along.

Student Selection

Book of applicants mailed to Trustee for delivery to club Pres – Elect With assistance of Trustee, clubs narrow down to small list of desired students Trustees meet and draft students for clubs

Home Office Notifies ApplicantsHome Office Submits Entrance Forms to SchoolClub/Trustee Notified After 1)Applicant Accepts and 2)School Issues I-20

Student Qualifications

Must Be SingleMust be 18 by 8/1 but not 25 by 8/1 entry yr.Previous Study in USA for more than 4 months disqualifiedIf Applicant Rejected by School, the Offer Withdrawn

Important Point

Our students are expected to conduct themselves in a higher manner that other students as they are representing GRSP, Rotary and their home country.

Student Responsibilities

Students must attend Conclave & District Conference (Host District Only)Students must reside in dorms and attend classesHost Families are expected to coordinate holiday activitiesStudents must present at least 2 club programs for each sponsoring club.

Student Must:

Provide TransportationProvide Health InsuranceHave $3000 in available US funds for personal expensesPay any taxes due on scholarship

Welcome Student prior to arrival Meet student at airport and provide housing until dorms open Provide student with dorm housekeeping essentials (sheets, towels, etc.) Hosting students on holidays, etc.Host Family Handbook on website
