Each year over 12,000 come togeth- er in Pigeon Forge, TN, to celebrate the God of The Resurrection. Through inspirational words and music led by nationally-known speakers and musicians, young people encounter the Lord in new and deeper ways. For many, Resurrection is an op- portunity for conversion, decision, and revival. For others, it becomes a moment of realization that their faith needs to grow deeper and more se- rious. Resurrection is hosted by the youth ministry of the Holston Con- ference of the United Methodist Church. Most of the youth and adults who attend Resurrection come from the geographical areas of northeast Georgia, eastern Ten- nessee, and southwestern Virginia. However, a significant and growing number of youth and adults come from churches outside of this region. Resurrection has become an inter- denominational celebration, wel- coming youth and adults from Bap- tist churches, Presbyterian church- es, the Christian Church, Lutheran churches, and more, as well as non- denominational churches; and from states as far away as Florida, Mis- sissippi, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Resurrection testifies to the common experience of Jesus Christ's living Lordship that binds all believers into one, despite our divi- sions. We desire to make all wel- come here. Although Resurrection has be- come a large gathering over its 30- year history, the focus of the event has remained constant: the individu- al young person and his or her re- sponse to Jesus Christ. We recog- nize the leadership of their parents, their peers, their leaders in their lo- cal churches, and youth groups to grow in radical discipleship that can change the world. Dates and Venue January 19-21, 2018 LeConte Center Pigeon Forge, TN Verse: Philippians 1:6 “I am sure that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Youth from FUMC have been attending Resurrection (REZ) for 30 years. In 2018 we sent 91 youth and adults, our largest group to REZ. It took one tour bus and two church buses to get them there. Each adult and youth member were asked to complete a questionnaire about their experience. One of the questions was “Please tell us what impacted you or changed you this week- end?” Here are some answers to that question: It made me feel closer to God. To be honest I came to be with my friends, but I got a lot more out of it than I thought I would. It inspires me to change and not just go back to all the bad things in my life. The speaker really impacted my life. It helped me get a lot closer to God. More humble. Those who attend REZ leave the weekend pumped and feeling “high” on God’s presence. Sometimes coming home and getting back to real life can be a letdown and being able to keep the spiritual momentum going is hard. Please keep these youths and adults in your prayers as they live daily for Christ.

Resurrection is an awesome an-nual event of worship and spiritual

growth for youth and youth mentors. Each year over 12,000 come togeth-er in Pigeon Forge, TN, to celebrate the God of The Resurrection. Through inspirational words and music led by nationally-known speakers and musicians, young people encounter the Lord in new and deeper ways.

For many, Resurrection is an op-portunity for conversion, decision, and revival. For others, it becomes a moment of realization that their faith needs to grow deeper and more se-rious.

Resurrection is hosted by the youth ministry of the Holston Con-ference of the United Methodist Church. Most of the youth and adults who attend Resurrection come from the geographical areas of northeast Georgia, eastern Ten-nessee, and southwestern Virginia. However, a significant and growing number of youth and adults come from churches outside of this region.

Resurrection has become an inter-denominational celebration, wel-coming youth and adults from Bap-tist churches, Presbyterian church-es, the Christian Church, Lutheran churches, and more, as well as non-denominational churches; and from states as far away as Florida, Mis-sissippi, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Resurrection testifies to the common experience of Jesus Christ's living Lordship that binds all believers into one, despite our divi-sions. We desire to make all wel-come here.

Although Resurrection has be-come a large gathering over its 30-year history, the focus of the event has remained constant: the individu-al young person and his or her re-sponse to Jesus Christ. We recog-nize the leadership of their parents, their peers, their leaders in their lo-cal churches, and youth groups to grow in radical discipleship that can change the world.

Each adult and youth member were asked to complete a questionnaire about their experience. One of the questions was “Please tell us what impacted you or changed you this week-end?” Here are some answers to that question:

It made me feel closer to God.

To be honest I came to be with my friends, but I

got a lot more out of it than I thought I would.

Please offer prayers of healing and wholeness for these members of our church family and friends:

Thelma Foglesong Carolyn Jones Debbie Martin Ruth Myers Bill Ogle Joann Pruitt Roy Simpson Katherine Teaster Jane Untiedt Ann Wolfenden

If you have a prayer request that you would like includ-ed in the newsletter, please fill out a prayer request card and be sure to check the box at the bottom of the card. Drop the card in the offering plate, and we will in-clude your request in the following month’s newsletter. You may also call the church office with your request.

2018 Altar Flower Calendar Altar flowers are more than beau-tiful ornaments. They are the expres-sion of our love for God and a way to glorify his name in all the earth. Flowers are also a gift and offering from the families and friends of FUMC. Placing flowers on the altar for our worship services is also a wonderful way to honor someone you love and appre-ciate or to remember a departed loved one. We thank you for your willingness to serve God in this meaning-ful way. The 2018 altar flower calendar is posted outside the church office, across from the conference room. Ar-ranging to place flowers on the altar is simple: Sign up on the Altar Flower Calendar for the date

you want to have flowers on the altar. Bring flowers you have purchased. Or... Call the local florists to purchase and arrange for a

delivery. Or…. Bring nice flowers from your yard that are in season. There is no cost guideline for your arrangement. Your gift is appreciated and received with love by God and FUMC. Please be sure to have your flowers in the sanctu-ary before the 8:45 am service on Sunday. Sign up early to request the dates you wish! Also, if you want an acknowledgement to appear in the bulletin please contact the church office to let Teri know.

The COM will meet to plan for spring and summer activities. We welcome our new chairper-son, Kim Austin. All program committee chairpersons will also share their proposals for the coming months. If you have sug-gestions for activities you would like to see offered at FUMC, please make arrangements to meet with your committee or min-istry group prior to February 15

so your proposals may be included on the agenda for the meeting on February 18. Please remember that this planning helps us re-serve protected dates on our church calendar to avoid overscheduling and conflicts with other groups and community activities. An accurate church calendar also helps our janitorial staff with their Thursday clean-ing for Sunday activities and the building security staff as they daily lower thermostats, turn off lights and se-cure the building. Thank you for your help.

PLEASE NOTE New Safety Policy: The exterior doors of the church are now being secured at 11:10 am on Sunday mornings. This is an effort to make our nursery area safer by limiting access to that area. If you need to pick up children or youth and you need to enter the church building after 11:10 am, please make ar-rangements with the nursery staff or youth teachers to have them meet you at the exterior door. Your Trustees continue to explore suggestions to help make our church a “safe sanctuary” for all.

Recovery Court Information Meeting Thursday, February 8 at 6 pm Please make plans to join us for a followup meeting with all of those concerned about the opioid and sub-stance abuse problems in our area. Our first meeting about this epidemic was on April 2, 2017, and we were pleasantly surprised that 39 citizens and a panel of sev-en community leaders shared their concerns, proposals and plans for addressing this issue. The October 13, 2017 edition of the Smyth County News & Messenger reported that the Smyth County Re-covery Court had finally received funding from the De-partment of Justice. On January 18, 2018, the Recov-ery Court held its first session. At the Recovery Court information meeting on Thurs-day, February 8, participants will meet three members of the seven-person team that makes up the Recovery Court: the Honorable Judge Deanis Simmons, Recovery Court Coordinator Michelle Ward and Ruth Cox from Mt. Rogers Community Services Board. They will inform us on how the court works and will suggest ways we can be sup-portive of this new court. Please join us.

FUMC gave to U.S. Advance, International Advance, Conference Advance and UMCOR Advance. This giving qualified the church once again to receive the “5-Star of Excellence Recognition Award.” Unfortunately, we were only able to pay 83.3% towards our Conference Apportionments. Therefore, we will not receive the “5-Star of Excellence Recognition Award.” In addition to regular operating budget income, you also contributed $15,786.87 to the Commu-nity Assistance Fund. This helped individuals and families in our community, our neighbors, with their rent, utility bills, natural gas, heating oil, medications, etc. I am grateful to work at a church that is so giving and kind to it’s “less fortunate neighbor.” A total of $35,209.00 was given as memorials, honorariums or just designated for a specific ministry. These funds helped support the Food & Fellowship program, Food Pantry, Grief Share Program, Stephen's Ministry, Youth Fund, Youth Christmas Project, Garrett Halsey Memorial, Beyond BB & Upward Soccer and various other ministries. In addition to all of the income listed above, you then stepped up & contributed $45,612.00 towards the “Capital

Campaign” Building Renovation loan, which resulted in a loan balance of 0 as of September 7, 2017.

God bless each of you. I look forward to 2018 and am waiting with anticipation as the year progresses to see how you can once again impress with your generosity. I can only imagine what the end results will show. The church is so fortunate to have such gracious and generous givers. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7
