Growing Up on Weber Point

The Lake Sammamish of today is surrounded by homes, but a few

Life & Learning before Education Hill

Patsy Rosenbach was recently asked by Bob Yoder a series of questions about

growing up in Redmond that Bob published in his redmondblog.org. Thanks

Bob for bringing out that history, some of which is reproduced below.

I grew up on "Education Hill" before it was Education Hill. It was a

dirt road that had huge washouts annually. … I have never lived farther

than 10 miles from Redmond. I truly enjoy the fellowship with those I

grew up with and the broadened scope of friends and acquaintances I

have acquired from my attendance at the Redmond Historical Society and

the annual reunions of Redmond (my mother's generation) and my alma

mater, Lake Washington High School, which was then the home of

students from Redmond, Kirkland, and Juanita.

I'm the youngest graduate in my class of 1958. I graduated at age 16. I

had the unique experience of knowing how to read, spell, and do

arithmetic before I entered school. My dad was blind and an invalid, but

he taught me and my older sister these facts before we entered

school. We had an older brother who suffered a severe reaction to a small

pox vaccination (I believe) as a youngster, and had to have his books sent

home with him to continue his studies. These lessons were repeated for

my sister and me. (A phenomenon in itself.)

Years later, I asked my dad how he could teach us to read when he

could not see the page. He said, "Your mother read to you, and you could

spell the words you didn't know, so I could work with you." I went to the

first grade, as there was no kindergarten offered that year (the taxpayers

had to vote it in and they declined that year), so I went directly to grade

one. I was there for about three weeks when I was sent to a combined

first and second grade room with Mrs. Shobert. I did all the second

graders work, but didn't go with them to music in Mrs. Woelcker's

room, so I knew I was a first grader.

When report cards came at year end, I couldn't resist the temptation to

open it on my walk up the dirt road home. It said "Promoted to Grade 3".

That's the first I knew I had been a second grader after all. So that put

little me in a position that required continual perseverance and stoic

determination. My elder sister had also skipped a grade and I had to

measure up, so I required the ultimate of myself throughout the years.

Membership Drive – Renewals Too!

We don‟t like bringing this up, but the fact is our membership revenue is

far below previous years, and most of that is because renewals are way

down. So if you haven‟t renewed, or joined for that matter, but appreciate our

efforts to preserve Redmond‟s heritage please consider doing so before the

end of 2011. That revenue is a key component of the funds that allow us to

keep the office open for history business. Thanks from your friendly

volunteer board at Redmond Historical Society!

Centennial Time Capsule? The City turns 100 in 2012 and among the ideas for celebrations is

creating a time capsule for the 200th

anniversary! What would you want folks

to know about us 100 years from now? Send ideas via email to

[email protected] or via US Mail to Redmond Historical Society,

c/o Miguel Llanos, 16600 NE 80th

St, Redmond, WA 98052.

Sammamish last month

dedicated the Evans Creek

Preserve just off Redmond-

Fall City Road and across

from Luisa May Alcott

Elementary. On that property

is the sign seen here, but the

city doesn‟t know what it

represents. Anyone know if

it‟s a family, a business, a

club? If so please contact

[email protected] or

425-802-3806. And do check

out the 180-acre park, more

info is at:
