ImagIne If cancer preventIon was as sImple as the foods we eat. Progressive research at The Ohio State University

is finding links between the foods we eat and the

prevention and treatment of cancer.

If we can develop a tomato product that, when consumed in modest amounts, reduces prostate cancer risk by even 10% then we are talking about

preventing 22,000 cases per year in the United states.4

the risk of prostate cancer is at

least 10 times lower in asian countries, where soy is a standard part of the daily diet.4

researchers are looking at ways to put the bioactive components of black raspberries into foods including: a candy-type product, a juice and a gummy snack for

oral cancerprevention.5

early studies have shown that

strawberry consumption may decrease precancerous lesions in the mouth which could lead to cancer.1

researchers are studying whether adding a component of cotton plants (gossypol) to chicken feed might result

in anti-cancer eggs. this could potentially inhibit breast, ovarian, cervical, uterine, adrenal, pancreatic and colon cancers.3

researchers have isolated compounds in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables which are

believed to prevent or slow the progress of many cancers.2

We are proud to donate $.05 per unit of soybean seed and $.10 per unit of corn seed sold to benefit the Cooperatives for the Cure of Cancer Fund at The Ohio State University.

Because we believe that food fights cancer, we are Growing the Cure™

The Cooperatives for the Cure of Cancer Fund at The Ohio State University was established in 2010 to support food-based research at the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) and The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James).

OSUCCC – James is the only cancer program in the country that features an National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center aligned with a nationally-ranked academic medical center and free-standing cancer hospital. As one of the nation’s largest public universities, some of the world’s leading experts and brightest minds from a broad spectrum of disciplines join forces to create knowledge and integrate groundbreaking research with excellence in education and patient-centered care.

We are working together to fight cancer through food research.

The Collaborative Effort

agrIcUltUre Farmers collaborate with The Ohio State University to grow the crops that head to the clinic for trials. Through a very advanced breeding program, growers are working to increase the bioactives in foods that help to prevent certain genes from mutating and forming cancerous tumors.

the ohIo state UnIversIty Faculty members, graduate students, scientists and researchers from diverse fields of plant genetics, horticulture, crop science, food technology and marketing (within CFAES) collaborate to develop novel crops or food products that are optimized for cancer prevention studies.

the James The James Cancer Hospital provides patients with the opportunity to participate in the coordinated Crops to the Clinic™ research studies of novel food products and nutritional strategies to prevent cancer or enhance cancer therapy as well as survivorship.

consUmers This collective effort of expertise will translate discoveries into the marketplace by way of food products that may reduce one’s risk of chronic disease. The ultimate goal of this collaboration is the prevention of human cancer.
