HAMLER — The Patrick Henry boys basketball team used a sim- ple strategy in its game against Archbold last night: force some- one beside Gene Goering to beat them. Josh Johnson nearly did. Johnson almost quadrupled his season scoring average to keep the Blue Streaks in front through most of the contest. Then the senior just missed a jumper in the final seconds, allowing the Patriots to escape with a 49-48 victory on their home floor. “I got hot, and I just figured I’d keep shooting until I started missing,” said Johnson, who finished with a game-high 19 points. “I guess my luck just ran out on the last shot.” With the win Patrick Henry took sole possession of first place in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League at 4-0. Kyle Bru- baker and Zack George each had 12 points for PH, now 8-2 overall, while Marc Krauss added 11. Josh Wyse backed Johnson with 12 points while Goering worked to finished with 11 for Archbold, which falls to 10-3 and 5-1. After the Patriots scored the first six points of the game, John- son took over. He hit a pair of 3- pointers to get the Blue Streaks on the board and scored 17 first-half points to give Archbold a 30-27 halftime lead. Johnson’s scoring helped the Streaks overcome the defense played on Goering, who came into the contest as the NWOAL’s leading scorer at 20.2 points per game but had just one in the half. “We wanted to stop Goering, but Johnson went off on us so we had to tweak [the game plan] at halftime,” Brubaker said. “He was making shots, and he was making plays. So we had to close down Johnson at the 3-point line.” While Archbold outplayed PH much of the game, it never led by more than six points. “The good thing for us is that they never got too far ahead, so we never lost contact with them,” PH coach Dave Krauss said. “They would have a five-point or six-point lead, we’d make a play and stay in contact.” The bad news for the Patriots was that they never seemed able to close the gap and claim the lead. Five times in the third quarter PH cut the lead to two points or fewer, only to see Arch- bold score. “We came in here thinking we just had to compete,” Blue Streaks coach Doug Krauss said. “They’re bigger, maybe stronger and faster, but that doesn’t make any differ- ence. You have to compete. “I thought our guys did that for the most part. When it came down to the end, they made one more play than we did.” And when it came down to the fourth quarter, the Archbold of- fense struggled. The Streaks made just one of 10 shots from the floor and scored just six points. Yet they managed to hold PH off until Brubaker drove the lane and scored with two minutes to play, giving the Patriots a 47-46 lead. Brian Yarnell made two free throws with 58.1 seconds left to give Patrick Henry a three-point cushion, and Archbold managed just two free throws by Goering 16 seconds later. “The thing that hurts the most is that we were ahead most of the game, and that we had them where we wanted them,” John- son said. “Then that last minute or so they took the lead away. It was frustrating.” — John Wagner More boys: CARDINAL STRITCH 65, OTTAWA HILLS 47 Michael Ameling had 19 points, nine rebounds and seven assists as Cardinal Stritch defeated visiting Ot- tawa Hills. By JOHN WAGNER BLADE SPORTS WRITER GIBSONBURG — A 2-19 sea- son doesn’t sound like much of a building block toward a champi- onship season. But the Gibsonburg boys bas- ketball team feels the seeds of its current success were planted during a dismal 2-19 season in 2002-03. That year Brent Liskai was in his first year as coach of his alma mater, and his roster included several freshmen who saw extensive varsity action. The results weren’t pretty. “We weren’t just 2-19 — we lost our first 15 games,” Liskai said. “It’s hard to lose your first 15 games in your hometown. But so many people stuck behind me. They said, ‘Coach, you’re doing the right things.’ “At times it’s easy to doubt ourselves, but I knew we did the right thing and we’d be OK.” The group of freshmen that year were talented, having won the Suburban Lakes Leagues’ eighth-grade title one year ear- lier. But having freshmen play against seniors turned out to be a mismatch. “Playing varsity my freshman year was totally different than it is now,” said senior Derek Wasserman. “Freshman year, it seemed everything we tried to do, we struggled. We couldn’t get anything to go.” But those freshmen had faith in Liskai, who as a player helped lead the Golden Bears to SLL titles in 1988 and ’89, as well as a district title in ’88. “He’s a great coach who knows what he’s doing, and he was a good player when he was younger,” senior Brent Ernsthausen said of Liskai. “We hear some of his stories, but he wants us to hang a banner of our own up in here.” Senior Nathan Kirwen agreed, adding, “Through those times when we were struggling, [coach] kept reminding us that things would get better. He had tough years when he was young, and as they got older they went to the regional. He told us to be patient.” Liskai also told his team to work hard. And they did, surviv- ing double practices during the Christmas break that season, and occasionally mixing in three practices in one day. “We really put in a work ethic that season,” Liskai said. “Some- times I feel bad that we worked them so hard, but it has paid off in the long run. And that tells you what kind of kids we have. It’s not fun when you’re losing, but to work that hard when you’re losing says something about all of those kids.” The results of that patience and hard work were slow but steady. One of Gibsonburg’s wins that season came against Otsego, one of the league lead- ers that season. Two years ago the Golden Bears inched toward .500 before improving to 13-8 last season. This year the Bears have blos- somed. With eight seniors, most of whom boast extensive varsity experience, Gibsonburg enters tonight’s contest with Wood- more at 11-1 overall and alone atop the SLL standings with a 7-1 record. While the team’s first-place status has been satisfying, Liskai said it is even more satisfying to see the players’ work ethic re- main the same. “These kids worked as hard when they were 2-19 as they do now,” he said. “We do the same things. There have been some good players who taught these guys how to work, and these guys took it and ran with it.” As a result the Golden Bears, who were the hunters as fresh- men, have become the hunted. “It was much easier being the hunter, going out each night thinking you can spoil some- one’s season by beating them,” Kirwen said. “Now the roles have changed. We have a big target on our forehead, and teams are out to beat us. We have to get used to playing hard each night because we never know what we’re going to see.” Liskai feels that’s a good prob- lem to have. “[Tuesday] we got an out- standing effort from Otsego, and I told [our guys], ‘You are a lot of people’s championship game,’ ” he said. “You have to play hard and stay focused.” “But these kids don’t change — they’re as goofy now as they were [as freshmen]. But know- ing the other end of [winning and losing] helps us appreciate where we are now.” Contact John Wagner at: [email protected] or 419-724-6481. HAMLER — The Patrick Henry boys basketball team used a sim-ple strategy in its game against Archbold last night: force some-one beside Gene Goering to beat them.

Josh Johnson nearly did.Johnson almost quadrupled

his season scoring average to keep the Blue Streaks in front through most of the contest. Then the senior just missed a jumper in the fi nal seconds, allowing the Patriots to escape with a 49-48 victory on their home fl oor.

“I got hot, and I just fi guredI’d keep shooting until I started missing,” said Johnson, who fi nished with a game-high 19 points. “I guess my luck just ran out on the last shot.”

With the win Patrick Henry took sole possession of fi rst place in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League at 4-0. Kyle Bru-baker and Zack George each had 12 points for PH, now 8-2 overall, while Marc Krauss added 11.

Josh Wyse backed Johnson with 12 points while Goering worked to fi nished with 11 for Archbold, which falls to 10-3 and 5-1.

After the Patriots scored the fi rst six points of the game, John-son took over. He hit a pair of 3-pointers to get the Blue Streaks on the board and scored 17 fi rst-half points to give Archbold a 30-27 halftime lead.

So we had to close down Johnson at the 3-point line.”

While Archbold outplayed PH much of the game, it never led by more than six points.

“The good thing for us is that they never got too far ahead, so we never lost contact with them,” PH coach Dave Krauss said. “They would have a fi ve-point or

six-point lead, we’d make a play and stay in contact.”

The bad news for the Patriots was that they never seemed able to close the gap and claim the lead. Five times in the third quarter PH cut the lead to two points or fewer, only to see Arch-bold score.

“We came in here thinking we just had to compete,” Blue Streaks coach Doug Krauss said. “They’re bigger, maybe stronger and faster, but that doesn’t make any differ-ence. You have to compete.

“I thought our guys did that for the most part. When it came down to the end, they made one more play than we did.”

And when it came down to the fourth quarter, the Archbold of-

fense struggled. The Streaks made just one of 10 shots from the fl oorand scored just six points.

“The thing that hurts the most is that we were ahead most of the game, and that we had them where we wanted them,” John-son said. “Then that last minute or so they took the lead away. It was frustrating.”

GIBSONBURG — A 2-19 sea-son doesn’t sound like much of a building block toward a champi-onship season.

But the Gibsonburg boys bas-ketball team feels the seeds of its current success were planted during a dismal 2-19 season in 2002-03.

That year Brent Liskai was in his fi rst year as coach of his alma mater, and his roster included several freshmen who saw extensive varsity action.

The results weren’t pretty.

“We weren’t just 2-19 — we lost our fi rst 15 games,” Liskai said. “It’s hard to lose your fi rst 15 games in your hometown. But so many people stuck behind me. They said, ‘Coach, you’re doing the right things.’

“At times it’s easy to doubt ourselves, but I knew we did the right thing and we’d be OK.”

The group of freshmen that year were talented, having won the Suburban Lakes Leagues’ eighth-grade title one year ear-lier. But having freshmen play against seniors turned out to be a mismatch.

“Playing varsity my freshman year was totally different than

it is now,” said senior Derek Wasserman . “Freshman year, it seemed everything we tried to do, we struggled. We couldn’t get anything to go.”

But those freshmen had faith in Liskai, who as a player helped lead the Golden Bears to SLL

titles in 1988 and ’89, as well as a district title in ’88.

“He’s a great coach who knows what he’s doing, and he was a good player when he was younger,” senior Brent Ernsthausen said of Liskai. “We hear some of his stories, but he wants us to hang a banner of our own up in here.”

Senior Nathan Kirwen agreed, adding, “Through those times when we were struggling, [coach] kept reminding us that things would get better. He had tough years when he was young, and as they got older they went to the regional. He told us to be patient.”

Liskai also told his team to work hard. And they did, surviv-ing double practices during the Christmas break that season,

and occasionally mixing in three practices in one day.

“We really put in a work ethic that season,” Liskai said. “Some-times I feel bad that we worked them so hard, but it has paid off in the long run. And that tells you what kind of kids we have. It’s not fun when you’re losing, but to work that hard when you’re losing says something about all of those kids.”

The results of that patience and hard work were slow but steady. One of Gibsonburg’s wins that season came against Otsego, one of the league lead-ers that season. Two years ago the Golden Bears inched toward .500 before improving to 13-8 last season.

This year the Bears have blos-somed. With eight seniors, most of whom boast extensive varsity experience, Gibsonburg enters tonight’s contest with Wood-more at 11-1 overall and alone atop the SLL standings with a 7-1 record.

While the team’s fi rst-place status has been satisfying, Liskai said it is even more satisfying to see the players’ work ethic re-

main the same.“These kids worked as hard

when they were 2-19 as they do now,” he said. “We do the same things. There have been some good players who taught these guys how to work, and these guys took it and ran with it.”

As a result the Golden Bears, who were the hunters as fresh-men, have become the hunted.

“It was much easier being the hunter, going out each night thinking you can spoil some-one’s season by beating them,” Kirwen said. “Now the roles have changed. We have a big target on our forehead, and teams are out to beat us. We have to get used to playing hard each night because we never know what we’re going to see.”

Liskai feels that’s a good prob-lem to have.

“[Tuesday] we got an out-standing effort from Otsego, and I told [our guys], ‘You are a lot of people’s championship game,’ ” he said. “You have to play hard and stay focused.”

“But these kids don’t change — they’re as goofy now as they were [as freshmen]. But know-ing the other end of [winning and losing] helps us appreciate where we are now.”
