What a fantastic prizegiving celebration this week. It is wonderful to see our

students blossoming. All year, through Autumn and Winter our students have worked hard and we have celebrated

their Spring results. Being successful at school is simply a matter of turning up, believing in yourself and doing the

work – pretty much like life! Our top students have certainly shown their self-belief and discipline to come to school

and get their work done.

I want to take the time to acknowledge our teachers who continue to go above and beyond to help our students with

their academic, sports and cultural goals. Without their dedication and perserverance, many would struggle.

It is also vitally important to thank the work that our support staff does. They keep the wheels turning, and without

their commitment to doing a good job for the school, the wheels would quickly start to wobble!

A big thank you to all of those whānau members who have made submissions for the strategic plan review. It

pleases me greatly to see your responses. The first question I asked was what do you want your child to be like

when they leave Tamatea – all of the responses were about character. You want them to be confident, skilled, good

people who are clear about goals. The second question was what would you like them to do when they leave

Tamatea High and you’ve said whatever their heart desires – whether that be further study or working. Our teachers

want exactly the same things for your children.

Design Technology - Hard Materials, making a

new path at school.

Microbeads are particles of tiny plastic less than 1mm in size that can be round or irregular in shape and produced in different colours. Microbeads are manufactured for use in consumer products such as body and face scrubs like ‘Clean and Clear’ or ‘Neutrogena’. People are known to buy these type of products with microbeads because they give a “feel good factor”.

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Microbeads from exfoliating products go down the drain and into our lakes, rivers, and oceans — by the billions every day. Because microbeads are made of plastic, this means they do not dissolve. Instead they absorb toxins in the water, and are eaten by marine life, and then they can make their way up the food chain all the way to our dinner plates. Our marine life is affected by the increasing number of Microbeads.

Trades Academy @ EIT Prize-giving

Trades students and their families attended the Trades Academy prize-giving on 26th October. It was a night of celebration as after attending EIT every Friday for three terms almost all Tamatea High School students had attained all their credits. Congratulations to all who crossed the stage and special congratulations to Tipene Douglas, top Year 1 builder and Shannon Geenty, top Year 2 Hospitality student.

Jesse Phillip Nikora Warena 9/10/1998 – 12/10/2016

Jesse Warena addressed the school at the end of term three, to thank everyone for the fundraising burgers we had made and sold, to raise funds so that he could do a sky dive as part of his 'bucket list'. In return, he received a rousing school haka. Jesse hadn't been around school much lately as he had been having lots of treatment for his Lymphoma (a type of cancer). Bravely he told us that the doctors had said his cancer was now incurable.

We all knew Jesse as the Year 13 with the big smile and (until his cancer treatment) the big hair. Jesse was also a New Zealand Champion Darts player .

Just three days into term 4 on 12 October 2016 we learned that Jesse had died. It was just two days after his 18th birthday and three days after his father died. Staff, former and current students supported his family at a service here at school and at the tangi at Pukemokimoki. There are plans, to early next year, plant lots of cheerful, smiling daffodils along Taradale Road so that every year in Spring we can keep remembering Jesse and his beautiful big smile.
