Liturgy: Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Readings: Isaiah 56:1, 6-7 Romans 11:13-15, 29-32 Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28 Message: God’s grace and mercy are promised to all. The readings today wrestle with the questions of who is in and who is out. When it comes to God’s grace, who will receive it? We learn that all who accept the gift of faith are incorporated into the covenant relationship with God.

Growing In Your Faith
The Assumption of Mary feast day is August 15 The Feast of the Assumption of Mary is the teaching that: The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into heaven, before her body could begin to decay. We get a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time. Because this signifies the Blessed Virgin’s passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a Holy Day of Obligation. The Proclamation of the Dogma of the Assumption November 1, 1950. “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” Pope Pius XII
Why is St. Hyacinth depicted holding a monstrance and a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary? According to legend, there was a Mongol attack on the city of Kiev. As the friars prepared for the invading forces, Hyacinth went to the tabernacle to save the Blessed Sacrament in the monastery chapel. He heard a voice of Mary from the stone statue of her asking Hyacinth to take her too. Hyacinth easily lifted the heavy stone statue of Mary and the ciborium out of the monastery and away from the invading forces despite of the fact that he should not have been able to lift and carry the statue. He saved both Jesus and Mary. For this reason, St. Hyacinth is usually seen carrying a statue of Mary and the ciborium or monstrance (which did not come into use until several centuries later.)
St. Hyacinth died August 15, 1257 in Poland and his feast day is August 17th.
Come Join us for a Mass for the feast of St. Hyacinth: Monday, August 17th at SS. Mary & Hyacinths 5:30 p.m. Adoration and Confession 6:30 p.m. Mass
David said to his son Solomon: “Be firm and steadfast; go to work without fear or discouragement, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or abandon you before you have completed all the work for the service of the house of the Lord.” The Lord is speaking the same words to us today. The phrases about fear; “fear not”, “do not be afraid” etc. can be found over 300 times in the Bible. The Lord knows that we will have difficult times in our lives: separation, death, disappointment, illness, loss of friends, family, freedom, jobs, homes, lack of faith, doubt, worry, pandemics, rioting. The Lord knows what we are going through. I can just hear the Lord tell me, “I got this!”. So, take a deep breath and remember His words: Isaiah 43:5 Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.

Receives Grant from the United Way The Charity Fund was a recent grant recipient from the United Way
of Langlade County. The grant was received on our behalf by Committee Chair, Steve Bradley and member, Gary Smits. Jane Szmanda Zeller and Jim Fittante presented the grant. SS. Mary & Hyacinth Charity Fund assists, through an application process, those in Langlade County who request assistance with basic needs and generally are not covered by another city or county program. The funds for this particular grant are designated for those whose work situation and income are directly affected by the Covid Virus. Applications are available at the SS. Mary & Hyacinth Parish Center and office. Much of the funding has come from interest income through an account set up by the Koszarek brothers. We rely also on parishioner and community donations to carry out our mission: “For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger and you welcomed me…” (Mt.25:35). The committee meets monthly to review applications and award grants. Our thanks to the United Way and to all Charity Fund donors.
