Grouse Mountain Lodge Grouse Mountain Lodge is set in the south west foothills of the Blue Mountains of north east Oregon. This is a beautiful area of mountain ranges up to 9000 ft; valleys of the upper John Day basin at 3000 ft; vast areas of forest and rolling grasslands and deep forested draws. Although sparsely populated at less than 2 persons per square mile, Grant County has full service amenities in the main cities of John Day and Canyon City, which are located at the junction of US highways 26 and 395. Climate is moderate, with few summer days over 90 F and few winter days below 20 F. Most of the year daytime highs are in the 40 F to 80 F range. Snow in winter rarely disrupts road travel and falls mostly at the higher elevations. Excellent roads provide easy year round access to the region. The lodge property of 715 acres has diverse topography and vegetation. It ranges from 3200ft elevation along 3/4 ml. of the heavily wooded riparian area of Beech Creek … an important steelhead spawning tributary of the John Day river; rising through juniper/bunch grass prairie to 250 acres of pine and fir forest above 4000 ft. From the upper reaches of the property it is overlooked by the summit plateau of Grouse Mountain at 4400 ft. Deep wooded draws connect the various zones. Wildlife is abundant with elk, antelope, deer and wild turkeys being regular visitors. The Lodge itself sits at 3800 ft on a south facing bench below Grouse Mountain. It overlooks a deep draw, to rolling hills and the forests and peaks of the Strawberry Mountain range in the middle distance. The views are spectacular, continually changing with season and weather. Clear night skies are common, with no light pollution and brilliant views of the myriad stars of the milky way. Adjacent to the property is a 3000 acre wildlife refuge that is currently in common ownership with the Grouse Mountain Lodge Property. The Lodge itself was completed in 2003, built by Storm Carpenter, a master full scribe log home builder, for the current owners. Logs of 18” to 24” were used throughout. It was built to the highest standards of finish, fittings and amenities … and maintained to that standard. Indeed it is one of the finest log homes to come on the market in Oregon in recent years. A barn with stalls, hay storage, tack room and workshops is conveniently close to the Lodge building and has associated pens, grazing paddocks and round pen. The main county town of John Day is just 20 minutes away. It offers more than the essentials of country living … full service grocery store, drug store, hardware and building supplies, sports supplies and several good restaurants. UPS has a local depot and provides excellent delivery service. Professional services including legal, accounting, doctors, dentists, and an excellent small hospital that operates as a satellite of a major medical facility in Bend is close at hand. John Day is a regional center for several government natural resource agencies. The local school system serves all age groups. John Day also sports a modern airport with many recent upgrades providing runways to 5000 ft plus and ILS approach systems. There is effective and efficient law enforcement with minimal serious crime. Folks feel safe here!
