Hardly any visitors can resist the fascination: even from a distance, the Hohensalzburg Fortress immediately attracts everyone’s attention. In its interior, it impresses with an abundance of art-historical details: the magnificent state rooms are among the most beautiful secular gothic rooms in Europe, the main tower promises unimaginable views of the mountains and the »Salzburger Stier« – a unique historical pipe organ – can still be heard today many times daily. The fortress provides an exclusive setting for events of all kinds and sizes. The valley station of the funicular is located directly in the old town of Salzburg.
Since autumn 2019, the new exhibition in the »Armory« is open. All about cannonballs, black powder and early modern fortress construction.

MODULE B The Late Gothic State Rooms In the Late Gothic around 1500, the State Rooms were created in the Hohen-salzburg Fortress. Learn more about their origins, the Gothic style of their furnishings and the courtly life of the time.

2 PERSONAL, INDIVIDUALLY ASSEMBLED TOURThe Hohensalzburg Fortress offers, in addition to the basic ticket, personal tours based on a modular principle. A tour consists of Module A and other modules, which are freely selectable. Each module takes about 20 minutes.

Visitors to Hohenwerfen Castle immerse themselves deeply in the history of the 11th century fortifications. Together with an historically costumed castle guide, you will explore the torture chamber, climb the bell tower, and look into the distance through the embrasures. You will meet the hunters of the air during the great birds of prey flight demonstrations and visit the fascinating exhibition »The Myth of Jackl – Witches and Wizards in Salzburg«. For events, the Fortress Courtyard, the Castle Tavern, the Great Hall, the Vaulted Casemate and three other rooms are available. From the free parking lot, a modern lift leads directly into the fortress courtyard.

3 THE MYTH OF JACKL – WITCHES AND WIZARDS IN SALZBURG
The people called him "Wizard Jackl" and his mother "Schinder Bärbel". He was a kind of Robin Hood of the 17th century and there are many myths about the man from Werfen. This fascinating exhibition with its themes of "Fantasy, Friends, Fire and Fate", explores the myths surrounding the world of witches and wizards – from the witches of fairy tales to the Salzburg witch trials to the latest witch cults all over the world.

Since the 13th century, Mauterndorf Castle has meant for travelers: open your purse and pay the toll. The trade route across the Alps once led through this important toll road. Today, figures and staged scenes invite you to a newly interpreted journey back in time to the Middle Ages. Among the highlights are a tour of the 44 meter high defense tower as well as the exploration of the private quarters of Prince Bishop Leonhard von Keutschach, who once used the castle as a summer residence. The Castle Tavern and Culture Hall can be rented for meetings and events of all kinds.
