Welcome to Nebraska’s Landmark Country. Here you will find the perfect place to

begin your next exploration. Two towering

monuments of sandstone mark the way. Scotts

Bluff National Monument and Chimney Rock

let you know you’re on the original road

west, just as they did for the fur trappers.

Pony Express riders and the half a million

pioneers who came before you.

Trailblazers have always been welcome

here. People who want to leave the beaten

path and find their own adventures. Those

twin beacons of sandstone are calling you

now. Touch the wagon wheel ruts of the

Oregon Trail. Fish the same waters

of the mountain men. Hike in

history’s footsteps. And

follow your own destiny.

Robidoux Pass & Trading PostGering’s Robidoux Pass, located one mile

south on Highway 71 and eight miles west

on Carter Canyon Road, boasts three old fur

trading post sites, one of which has been

reconstructed. The trading post was moved

several times to accommodate travelers. The

pass was used by emigrants traveling to

Oregon, as well as fur trappers, traders,

Native Americans and gold rushers. It was

named for the Robidoux family, who opened

fur trading posts all along the Oregon Trail,

especially Joseph Robidoux III, for whom

St. Joseph, Mo., is named. One of the posts,

located in Carter Canyon, is known as post

number two was used between 1851 and

1853. It was excavated and reconstructed

from sketches in 1995.

Pioneer graves include the “Dunn” grave,

one of only seven marked burial sites along

the Oregon Trail, are seen in Robidoux Pass.

Markers show the exact location of the trail

in places where ruts have been eroded.

Agate Fossil BedsNational MonumentAgate Fossil Beds and its surrounding prairie are preserved in a 3,000

acre national monument. Once part of “Captain” James H. Cook’s Agate

Springs Ranch, the nearby beds are an important source for 19.2 million

year-old Miocene epoch mammal fossils. Cook’s ranch also became a

gathering place for Chief Red Cloud and other Oglala Lakota (Sioux)

Indian people. The monument’s Cook Collection of American Indian

artifacts reflects years of gifts brought by the Indians during visits to the

ranch from the 1880’s through the early 1900’s.

Wildcat Hills Nature CenterNature lovers should take a hike! A hike, that is,

through the trails of Western Nebraska’s Wildcat

Hills State Recreation Area. The picturesque paths

reveal a side of Nebraska that most people don’t

realize is there. Thousands of Ponderosa delight

the senses with their rich pine scent and towering

beauty. Scenic vistas provide a perfect backdrop

for a peaceful day in the woods. And wildlife such

as birds and deer only add to the tranquility of the

experience. Animal displays, live beehive and bird

observation area, and a 27-foot ponderosa pine in

the building. And it’s not uncommon to look out

the window and find a wild turkey pecking on the

building’s ground-level windows. A walk out on the

deck reveals a bird’s-eye view of the park area, which

encompasses just under 1,000 acres. Picnic and

camping areas are available. Located 8 miles south of

Gering on Highway 71. The Center is open daily.
