message from your CEOThis year has started for Kentz like many others, with a relentless focus on health and safety. Wehave taken the opportunity to launch the HSE Best Practice Programme to encapsulate our safetyvision. The programme takes each Leadership Habit and provides practical advice on how to ensurethat it is being embraced across all our sites.
It seems to be working. We have just celebrated the fantastic achievement of 2.5 million man-hourscompleted without Lost Time Incident on the Moma Mineral Sands Project in Mozambique andKentz was also delighted to be part of the team that won the ExxonMobil Development Company2009 Contractor Safety Award for the RasGas off-plots project in Qatar.
Achievements are a recurring theme in this issue of the newsletter as we report on more projectsuccesses than ever before. One of Kentz’s strengths has been our ability to adapt to meet thechanging demands of the environment and, most importantly, our core clients. This is more pertinentthan ever.
To support this we have implemented a reorganisation of Kentz along our three business lines;Specialist EPC, Construction and Technical Support Services. This will facilitate the sharing of sectorexpertise and resources right across the global offices of Kentz and will be in place by the end of 2009.
This year is an historic one for Kentz as we celebrate 90 years in business. It is an achievement ofwhich I am proud to be a part. I joined Kentz in 1991 and can safely say it has changedimmeasurably in the intervening years. It is hard to imagine what Michael Francis Kent would thinktoday of the small electrical engineering company he founded in Clonmel in 1919. But the words ofAnthony Dempsey, Senior Contracts/Commercial Manager in Qatar who has worked for Kentz for45 years, would no doubt resonate with him: “I am part of it and it is part of me”. You can read moreabout the history of Kentz, Anthony’s career and many other employees’ stories and achievementson pages 10 to 13.
People are Kentz’s greatest resource and it is their dedication which positions us well to deliverstrong growth in the coming year despite the challenges presented by the poor state of the globaleconomy. Our strategy of focusing on oil and gas, petrochemicals and energy projects in developingregions has been highly successful and we have entered 2009 with a backlog in excess of US $1bn,the largest in the Company’s history.
Our pipeline of target project prospects is in excess of US $2.15bn, and gives me great optimismfor the next chapter in Kentz’s history – to deliver bigger and better projects for our clients whilstensuring that everyone goes home safe and well.

Kentz’s scope of work on the SaudiKayan project has continued to growin 2009 with the award of anothercontract in January for theEquipment Installations andassociated works for the additionalfive substations on the site.
This recent contract follows theaward in December 2007 of an initialcontract for the HV Installation, under utilities and off-sites by SaudiKayan/Fluor Arabia Ltd, whichincluded the construction of themain 230KV substation and two main distribution substations.
In November 2008, Kentz was involved in a major milestone onthe project in energising the 230KV main substation. This wasachieved through a team effort involving Saudi Kayan, SaudiElectric Company (SEC), FAL, ABB and Kentz. The substationwill provide power to the entire petrochemical mega-complex.Kentz’s role in this remarkable achievement was highlightedduring an “Energisation Party” given by Saudi KayanManagement.
This was followed by another Saudi Kayan contract secured forthe System Integrator and Loop Checking, meaning that Kentzwas integral in making this mega-complex operational. Kentz’s scope of work included the installation, testing andcommissioning of control systems
in six main control buildings, loop checking and planttelecommunication systemsinterfaced under U&O constructionwork packs.
Saudi Kayan PetrochemicalCompany is currently building thelargest petrochemical productioncentre in the world, estimated atapproximately US $10bn, in Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia. Over fourmillion tonnes of petrochemical and chemical products for the
automobile, textile and pharmaceutical industries will bedeveloped on site, with some products being introduced to thecountry for the first time.
The recent project award includes the main electrical trenchcable pulling and civil works under contract modifications, andwill be led by Project Manager Anthony Uy and Project ControlsManager Tom Grogan.
Kentz was delighted to be named HSE “Contractor of the Month– Best Safety Performance for December 2008” by SaudiKayan/Fluor Arabia Ltd under U&O Facilities.

In March 2008, Kentz was awarded the commissioning contractfor the SBM Calm Buoy Project located in the Keppel Yard inAngra Dos Reas, Brazil. The value of the contract to Kentz wasapproximately US $1m, for a duration of eight months.
The two calm buoys were built by SBM for Petrobras, andKentz’s scope of work included the onshore commissioning forthe mechanical and E&I systems. Kentz was also responsiblefor vendors and the completion of all documentation with SBMand Petrobras.
The buoys are the first of their kind and include a number oftechnical advances. As well as providing moorings while thetankers are being loaded, the buoys also use a control system
to monitor the amount of oil being transferred which is linked tothe main platform via a sub-sea fibre optic cable. The buoysalso include a swivel which enables the top section to rotatethrough 360 degrees and still maintain oil flow and monitoring. This swivel section has a hydraulic winch that is used for pullingup the loading hoses.
These systems will handle the loading of the oil produced fromseveral fields in the Campos basin. The oil flows to the buoysvia a gathering-and-booster platform and a large FloatingProduction Storage and Offloading (FPSO). FPSOs arebecoming more popular in the region, where the shallow watersmean they can replace fixed offshore platforms. They have the
advantage of being easily moved, especially in areas around the coast ofMexico that are prone to hurricanes.
Each buoy also has its own shutdown, fire, gas and flood detection systemsand wave monitoring. They are servicedby a maintenance vessel that suppliesthem with a 220V three-phase supplyand a 110V supply for all lighting andsmall power.
Colin Long, Kentz Technical ServicesManager for Offshore, said: “We are
delighted to be working on another
successful project for SBM using our
technical systems expertise. We look
forward to undertaking more work in the
offshore upstream oil & gas market with
this industry-leading partner.”

This year marks the 90th anniversary of Kentz and provides anopportunity to reflect on what our history means and how it hasshaped the culture and growth of the company that we all know, and love, today.
Kentz, formally known as MF Kent, had relatively humble originsas an electrical contracting company founded by Michael FrancisKent in Ireland. The very first office opened on Parnell Street,Clonmel, Co. Tipperary in 1919. It would have been almostimpossible to imagine ahead to2009 and a company with over10,000 staff and a foothold in morethan 20 countries across the world.
Kentz remained a relatively smalloperation until the 1960s, carryingout rural electrification schemes inIreland. Anthony Dempsey joined asa school leaver in 1964. He wasjust 15 years old and says,“Clonmelwas a small town in Ireland, it wasone of only very few employers atthat time.” Anthony’s first bosswas Michael Kent and heremembers working for him felt like being part of the family. Thathas changed somewhat now, but he concedes the expansion ofthe business in the late 1960s offered him the opportunity to goabroad for the first time in his life.
During the 1960s and 1970s there was significant industrialdevelopment within Ireland and Kentz began to reap the rewardsthrough an expanded client base and opportunities to work innew locations for the very first time. Kentz built up importantcontacts with overseas engineering and managementcontractors through pharmaceutical projects with Merck, Sharpeand Dohme, Pfizers, Schering Plough, Eli Lilly and Wyeth. It alsoworked for Guinness, Irish Distillers, Avonmore and Kerry Groupin the food and beverage sector, and for NET in the fertiliserindustry.
In 1977 Kentz made its first move into the oil and gas industry bycompleting a project for Marathon Oil – the Alpha A and Boffshore platform in the Irish Sea off Cork. This enabled Kentz todevelop relationships with large American players such asBechtel, Foster Wheeler, Kellogg and Fluor, which led toinvitations to work in the Middle East.
So began the first chapter in Kentz’s international expansion andit is reassuring today, as we look towards new geographies and
new opportunities with existingclients, to know that we have beenhere before and with many of thosesame clients.
Kentz was given its first opportunityin Saudi Arabia with Fluor USA onthe Shedgum and Uthimaniyacommissioning of electrical andinstrumentation on gas oilseparating plants (GOSP) in 1978.It was worth around US $6m inproject fees to Kentz, but was alsoa major stepping stone to morecontracts in the Middle East.
Someone who was key to the early project successes in SaudiArabia was Maurice Meaney. He joined Kentz in 1967 as anapprentice electrician and in the late 1970s carried out the firstmarket feasibility study of Saudi Arabia. It is still evident today inour hugely successful track record and expansion in the region.Forty-two years on, Maurice is working for Kentz in Ireland and isan integral part of the Group’s worldwide proposals team.
We are currently working alongside Fluor for Saudi KayanPetrochemical Company on the largest petrochemical productioncentre in the world, estimated at approximately US $10bn, andhave completed many major projects for Saudi Aramco,ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron, Sabic, Sipchem and the RoyalCommission in Saudi Arabia.

Nineteen-eight-three saw Kentz commence operations in: AbuDhabi – on projects for all the major oil and power companies;Kuwait – carrying out major electrical and instrumentationmaintenance contracts for Kuwait National Petroleum Company(KNPC); and Iraq – working on power andinfrastructure projects for the Iraqigovernment. We continue to operate inKuwait following a temporary absence duringits invasion and current speculation is thatinternational oil companies will shortly bemoving back in to Iraq. Kentz willundoubtedly be right there with its keyclients.
The Middle East now accounts for over 60%of our annual sales and one of the fastestexpanding locations has been Qatar.Kentz opened an office in Qatar in 1997,after being awarded the Engineering,Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for the NGL 1&2analyser upgrades project for Qatar Petroleum in Mesaieed.Other projects followed closely after, including the constructioncompletion, testing and commissioning works for the Arab Dproject and the E&I works for RasGas Trains 1 and 2 from
Kokusai Keiso and Showa Astek. Qatar Kentz has nowexpanded into a US $200m operation carrying out EPC projectsfor RasGas, Qatargas and Shell in Ras Laffan which, oncecomplete, will be the largest industrial city of its kind anywhere inthe world.
In the late 1970s as Kentz was expanding its operations in theMiddle East, it was invited to tender for the Sasol II and Sasol IIIsynthetic fuel plant projects in Secunda, South Africa. TheCompany took advantage of its expanding and mobile workforceto secure the Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) installation andcommissioning works. It was to be another milestone in theCompany’s history as in 1982 the Company opened its firstAfrican office in Johannesburg and went on to develop a majorpresence as an E&I contractor in the region.
Kentz South Africa now has offices located in Midrand, Durban,Vanderbijlpark and Secunda and currently employs more than2,500 people. It is one of the top three construction companiesin South Africa in its sectors.
South Africa was also the first location that our current chiefexecutive, Hugh O’Donnell, worked in with Kentz. Hugh movedto South Africa in 1987 after qualifying as an engineer in
Limerick because there was little work in Ireland at the time. Hejoined Kentz four years later because, he says, “It offered me aroute to work my way back home”. Hugh admits he had neverheard of Kentz before reading about it in an in-flight magazine. Itmust have been convincing advertising because he seems to flyeverywhere but Ireland these days! In Africa alone Kentz hascompleted projects in countries including Mozambique,Madagascar, Botswana, Zambia, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe,Kenya, Lesotho, Nigeria, Cameroon and Angola. Hugh believesthat despite the expansion in its global footprint theentrepreneurial spirit and culture in Kentz has remained largelythe same and working with Kentz people is still overwhelminglythe most rewarding part of his job.

Yousuf joined Kentz in Saudi
Arabia in April 1984 after hearing
from another local candidate that it
was holding interviews. He started
out as an Administrator in the Trading Division and
enjoyed the role because it involved working directly
with senior management and offered him the
opportunity to take on more responsibility over time.
Yousuf moved on to work with Noel Kelly in the
Contracting Division and later with Michael Ross
Lonergan. Over the years, he also worked on various
projects including the King Fahd International Airport
and Sceco Headquarter Building Phase II in
Dammam, and the Industrial Waste Water Treatment
Plant at Jubail. In 1992 he moved on to the role of
Administration Officer and later worked as Senior
Human Resources Officer. In February 2009, Yousuf
was promoted to Human Resources Country
Manager. He says Kentz has changed beyond
recognition over the years, but that Riyadh is still dry
and that every day at work still presents new
challenges!

In 1986 Kentz’s presence in theSouthern hemisphere expanded toAustralia. Through a joint venturewith O’Donnell Griffin, it secured theoffplot E&I and total projectcommissioning for WoodsidePetroleum in Karratha, WestAustralia. Kentz’s commitment tothe region was formalised in 2004through the creation of a 50/50 jointventure partnership with Thiess.Thiess Kentz Pty was incorporatedin September 2006 to provide clientsin the heavy industrial sectors inAustralia and Indonesia with leadingengineering and constructionelectrical specialist services.
In just a few years the Company hasexpanded its operations and nowhas offices in Perth, Brisbane andMelbourne, and has successfullycompleted projects in every statetotalling three million man-hourswithout Lost Time Incident (LTI).

Pat, one ofKentz leading safety championssays, “Kentz approach to health andsafety has altered dramatically overthe past ten years from the topdown and become far more focusedon the individual and his safety”. Key to Kentz’s success as anindustry leader in healthand safety is a relentless focus on“making sure people arelistening, understanding
and implementing safety messages”.
Overcoming cultural barriers can be tough, Patadds, “in the words of Jim Morrison, it’s a case of‘Break on Through (To the Other Side)’”!.
The late 1990s and the early part of this century hasseen the advent of oil and gas exploration anddevelopment in increasingly remote locations. Thishas played to Kentz’s strength of working inchallenging environments and has yet againhighlighted the value we bring to our core blue-chipclients. Their demands saw the creation in early2005 of the Kentz Arctic region and the opening ofheadquarters on the oil-rich Sakhalin Island in Far-East Russia.
This serviced the needs of two major initiatives, namely theSakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 developments fronted by ExxonMobiland Shell respectively. In 2006, Kentz was awarded aconstruction and commissioning services contract at theSakhalin-2 development which has seen its continued presencein the life cycle of this high-profile project providing technicalsupport services over the last four years.
Dave Lannon is the Project Manager on Sakhalin Island and hasbeen there for the duration of Kentz’s involvement there. Thecoldest temperature in the last four years has been around minus42 degrees which he says presents entirely different challengesto a working environment “when walking around becomes verydifficult”. The projects in Sakhalin are in extremely remotelocations and there is wide cultural diversity onsite. As in projects

He says, “It was my dream to work fora multinational company and I knew about Kentz throughworking at Sinclus India, one of its main recruiters for theMiddle East.” Zahid was just 24 years old at the timebut enrolled himself for interview because Kentz seemedto place a lot of emphasis on the support and wellbeingof its employees. His first boss was Ramesh Kotian.Over the years there have been massive changes inKentz, but Zahid says the working environment remainsenjoyable and friendly. The biggest challenge has beenthe extreme climate in Kuwait and long absences fromhis family in India, but he adds, “Kentz has become anintegral part of my life”.

across the world, getting people to bond is important. Dave saysthe lack of local amenities is overcome with typical Kentz flair“through organising regular sporting competitions and weeklysocial gatherings”.
As part of its growth in the Arctic Region, Kentz also targeted theCaspian area and opened offices in Azerbaijan and Kazakhstanin early 2005 to service the BP PCWU project and the ChevronTCO project in both countries respectively. Another client requestwitnessed Kentz open its Canadian branch in 2007 when it wasinvited by Imperial Oil Canada to participate in the Kearl ProjectConstructability Review process. In early 2009, Kentz Canadawas awarded the permanent telecoms EPCM contract and workcommenced in May.
Today the Arctic and New Areas management team continue toexplore new and diverse areas for expansion such asNewfoundland and Alaska in the Arctic, South America and theIndonesian archipelago.
The shifting oil and gas landscape has also seen the revival ofonce-forgotten areas of exploration such as Trinidad. Kentzentered the Caribbean for the first time in 1997 with theaward of a contract with Kellogg Pan America Corporation –the very same Kellogg that it worked alongside on its first oiland gas contract for Marathon in Ireland. The scopeincluded the execution of Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I)works on the PCS Ammonia plant located on the Point LisasIndustrial Estate, Couva, Trinidad.
In 2001 Kentz formed a joint venture with a Trinidadcompany called OJ’s Electrical and Instrumentation Servicesto pursue E&I opportunities in the local energy-basedbusiness sector. In April of that year Bechtel awardedKentz-OJ’s the complete E&I package for the Atlantic LNG(ALNG) Expansion Project for Trains II & III. The project wascompleted ahead of schedule and under budget, which ledBechtel to award Kentz-OJ’s the E&I work for the ALNGTrain IV in 2004, which at that time was the largest LNG train in the world.
Despite involvement in mega projects around the world,Kentz’s connection with Ireland remains a steady presence. In2007 Kentz was awarded the contract for the complete electricalsystems on the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Scheduled to befinished in 2010, the project is the landmark renovation of the oldLansdowne Road site, recognised as the home of Irishrugby.Strong Irish routes we may have, but Kentz has not shiedaway from seizing opportunities abroad and making the most ofthem. Remote locations and challenging logistics are conditionsunder which we flourish. It is the outstanding people working for
Kentz, who except nothing less than finishing projects on timeand on budget, who bring real value to our clients. We have arelentless focus on health and safety, but an inherent culture offamily and fun – something that is, in no small measure, down toour Irish roots!
Kentz has undergone a remarkable transformation in the past 90 years and it continues to go from strength to strength today. In 2008 it completed a very successful listing on the AIM marketof the London Stock Exchange and is now a publicly tradedcompany. It marked another momentous milestone in our historythat has not only raised our profile with clients, competitors andsuppliers, but will also help to facilitate our vision for the nextstage in the Company’s future and ensure Kentz is here for manymore anniversaries to come.

On 5th April, four Kentz employees, based in the Doha office,Qatar, took part and completed the Paris Marathon in an effort toraise money for charity.
Colm Coyle (BD Executive), Shane Kelly (Mechanical Engineer),Andrew Daykin (Structural Engineer) and Killian Coleman (ProjectEngineer) began training for their big day just after Christmas andput in many hours of training in a bid to stay on their feet for the 26.2-mile distance around the French capital. Most of their trainingwas done in Doha, with some of their longer runs taking three tofour hours.
Overall, each of the boys clocked up approximately 400 milesduring the course of the 3-month training plan. This was notwithout sacrifice, with social nights being deleted from thecalendar, celebrations of Ireland’s rugby triumph being put on holdand certain vices being cut out of their diets. Nothing would standin the way of their aspirations to reach the finish line at l’Arc deTriomphe.
Starting on the Avenue de Champs Elyseés, competitors madetheir way past the Louvre Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, ParisHippodrome and other major Parisienne landmarks. With 22 milesunder their belt, they then meandered through the Seine tunnelsand past the Eiffel Tower where they eventually finished in greattimes back at the l’Arc de Triomphe.
They all decided that they would complete this in conjunction with
a charity of their choiceto give something backto people that may neverrealise their dream ofcompeting in suchevents. Colm, Shane andKillian, all of Irishnationality, set up adonation centre for theIrish Heart Foundation. This charity had a special meaning to eachof them and they went on to raise €5,867from friends, family and fellow employees.Andrew Daykin, who hails from Scotland, chose Guide Dogs for the Blind as hisbeneficiary and raised nearly £1,250. The work has been completedand the facility is vastly improved andready to be used as a care centre forchildren. We have also supplied basicequipment including tables, chairs, crayons, educational books, building blocks, Plasticene®,blackboards and a jungle gym. Kentz will also be sponsoringa food programme and intends to expand the facility withanother structure to cater for older children.
In addition, Kentz helped Ma Selina to fulfil a dream andsponsored her attendance at the Early ChildhoodDevelopment Conference in Cape Town, a wonderful,

In 2008, Kentz made a donation to
Azafady, an award-winning Non-
Governmental Organisation (NGO)
operating in Southern Madagascar. The
money was put towards the costs of an
ongoing rural livelihoods training and
capacity building project in Mahatalaky
and Mandromondromotra rural
communes. This donation has aided
the delivery of information and
education services that aim to support
rural men and women to diversify their
livelihoods and improve health and
wellbeing, enabling communities to
help themselves in the long term.
The people of Anosy region, in which
Kentz has been operating for the past
24 months, live in extremely isolated
rural communities in the south-east of
Madagascar and are one of the poorest
ethnic groups in the country. Anosy,
despite the recent investment the
Mandena project has brought, remains
one of the least developed regions in
Madagascar and the majority of the
population live below the poverty line. It
suffers from one of the lowest per
capita incomes and one of the highest
rates of disease, infant mortality and
illiteracy.
The government considers stagnation
of the agricultural sector to be one of
the principal causal factors behind the
alarming poverty in the countryside. It
stresses the importance of the revival of
the agricultural sector in its national
poverty reduction strategy. The soil
and climate are suitable for
improvement/diversification of crops,
but farmers lack knowledge of new
techniques and cannot afford or obtain
necessary inputs. In 2000, Azafady
began to address this need, focusing
efforts upon the rural commune of
Mahatalaky, one of the least developed
in the region. With participation from
local stakeholders, they determined the
immediate needs and established a
livelihoods training programme to help
families meet subsistence needs and
generate some household income.
Poor radio reception, illiteracy and the
nature of livelihood skills in demand
meant face-to-face training was the
only method for skill transfer.
Azafady established a training and
demonstration centre in Lanirano on the
outskirts of Fort Dauphin, some 5 km
from the Mandena project site, and
training was provided to four rural
communities in improved rice
cultivation, graft cassava techniques,
vegetable cultivation, bee-keeping and
pattern weaving through rural extension
agents who themselves developed
these new skills at the centre before
putting them into practice in their
villages. The initiative ran for two years;
during this time their staff worked at full
capacity in the training of over 500
individuals. Benefits now seen (i.e.
greater yields) are of greater significance
considering the current food insecurity
in the region which has been somewhat
exasperated by the presence of the
mining community.
Since then, this NGO has been
approached by other rural communities
for assistance and in 2007, the project
expanded to cover needs in eight
villages in Mahatalaky as well as
the community of Evatraha in
Mandromondromotra.
The donation from Kentz enabled its
current activities (training in bee-
keeping, grafting cassava and home
vegetable gardening) to continue in
these villages throughout 2008,
enabling rural households to increase
their food security, improve diet and
generate essential income for a
sustainable period. The project will
touch the lives of some 12,000 people.

Proud Kentz representatives handing over their donation
● The vegetable cultivation programme
increased the food security of families
by at least 50% whilst also generating
income
● The produce is improving the diet of
others since it is being traded at rural
markets
● Responding to the needs of women
is a very high priority and to date,
training has been accessed by
women as well as men – vegetable
gardening involved far more women
than men since they were grown on
land near the home, enabling women
to combine this with household
duties.
