From your Vicar… Dear friends, Recently, several people have asked about the different types of service we hold at our churches. I've also had questions as to what the names we use on the service rota mean. So here's a quick introduction with an apology if we've managed to confuse you with our terminology. Services tend to be either Family Services, Prayer Services or Holy Communion. Family Services This type of service is designed to be 'family friendly'. They are shorter, to help accommodate those with small children. The music often includes songs that children sing at school and the sermon is normally more of a talk that aims to involve any children present. Traditional hymns are also used so that the service offers something for those not at school. The liturgy (the prayers etc said by the service leader and congregation, printed on a sheet or in a book that is given to you as you enter) contains familiar elements such as the confession, creed and the Lord's Prayer (albeit in modern language) so that children can make a connection between these services and the others we offer. Prayer Services These tend to be labelled on our rota as Morning or Evening Prayer, Mattins (the traditional name for morning prayer) or Evensong (evening prayer but with parts of the liturgy sung). All our prayer services are offered in traditional language from the timelessly beautiful Book of Common Prayer. We don't offer Holy Communion (the bread and wine) during prayer services. Holy Communion Our services of Holy Communion are similar to our prayer services but also include the distribution of bread and wine. We offer this form of service in both modern English and traditional language (often labelled BCP for Book of Common Prayer on church noticeboards). Each of our five churches has a different pattern as to
when you might expect modern or traditional language. If you'd like to know which to expect, ask one of your church wardens. For those who prefer not to sing! For those who prefer not to sing we offer a service of Holy Communion in traditional language at 8am on the 3rd Sunday of each month, at Tissington. Exploring Christianity On the 1st Sunday of each month we hold a discussion group at Fenny Bentley at 3.30pm. At this meeting we tend to look in more detail at a particular Bible passage or Christian theme. Especially for Children Let There Be Light! Our modern format Sunday school normally takes place on 5th Sundays. See our facebook page (www.facebook.com/fivechurches) to see what we get up to. Not normally a 'church-goer'? Church services are quite routined and being new can feel daunting. The person leading the service will make sure that everyone knows what page of the book you're on and when to stand or sit. You are welcome at any of our services. People attend worship for many reasons. Whether you're looking for a place to reflect, a space to connect with God, a place to pray about something that's concerning you or just wanting to say thank you to our heavenly father, you'll be welcome. Wishing you Christ's blessing,
Andy

Thanks to Andrea and Dennis Stone for organising the recent fundraiser at the Bentley Brook. I'm sure everyone who attended the evening will agree the Hayley Sisters (& Dad) are a fantastic group and a great night was had by all. The event raised an amazing £756 which will be put towards the Church. Annual Church magazine subscriptions of £5 are due next month. I will try to collect the money when I deliver the April magazine. Alternatively you can drop it through my letterbox (5 Ashes Lane). Kathy Dutton
MUSICIANS TUNE UP TO SUPPORT
ASHBOURNE FIRST RESPONDERS
SURFACE NOISE is a newly formed 12-piece band made up of local musicians who are hoping to hit the high note with their new venture. They plan to set the town rocking on Friday, March 23, from 7.30pm, with songs from bands including the Blues Brothers and the Commitments, and hits such as Midnight Hour, Dance the Night Away and All Right Now. The evening will raise funds for Ashbourne Community First Responders, a life-saving service run by St John Ambulance in partnership with the East Midlands Ambulance Service. Surface Noise vocalist Catherine Lawson is the unit leader. She says: “The band is great fun and we all enjoy playing together, so the dance should be a really good evening – but we’ll also be helping to support a crucial local service.” ‘First Responders rely on donations and fundraising to keep going, so we hope local people will support this event. You never know when you might need us!’ Ashbourne Community First Responders are specially trained local volunteers who provide prompt emergency care until an ambulance arrives. The unit is alerted by the ambulance service following a 999 call; as an ambulance sets out to answer the emergency, a local Responder can be on the scene in minutes to carry out essential first aid. Dance the Night Away takes place at the Empire Ballroom, Ashbourne, from 7.30pm on Friday, March 23. Tickets, priced £8, are now on sale at Natural Choice, St. John Street Gallery Café or from any band member. To find out more about Ashbourne First Responders or to donate a raffle prize, please contact Catherine Lawson on 07795 833 119.
THANK YOU
A huge thank you to Geoff and Val Smith for their years of service locking and unlocking the church. Much appreciated by all of us and so many tourists.

March Parwich Film Show
Friday 16th March at 7.45pm
This wonderful and moody adaption of Jane Eyre stars Mia Wasikowska,
Michael Fassbender, and Dame Judi Dench, and was shot on location in many
areas of our own Derbyshire, including Haddon Hall, Wingfield Manor and
Stanedge.
Jane flees Thornfield House, where she works as a governess for wealthy
Edward Rochester. It is clear that the isolated and imposing residence - and Mr.
Rochester's coldness - have sorely tested the young woman's resilience, forged
years earlier when she was orphaned. She must now act decisively to secure her
own future and come to terms with the past that haunts her - and the terrible
secret that Mr. Rochester is hiding and that she has uncovered.

COFFEE MORNINGS Although several people were not able to be present at our Coffee Morning on February 15
th, we had a very
pleasant time. There were some lively discussions! Donations were particularly generous as some came from people who were unable to attend on the day. A cheque has been sent to the local County Air Ambulance Charity: ‘The Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance’ for £70.00 which is wonderful. A letter has just been received to give a ‘big thank you’ to everyone for the donation ‘to help them keep on flying and saving lives.’ Every gift makes a difference. They receive neither Government nor National Lottery funding. Our next Coffee Morning will be on March 21
st and the charity to
benefit from any donations will be WaterAid. We take for granted that we have clean water but there are millions out there, particularly in Africa, who have no access to safe water and sanitation, one of life’s most basic human needs. The work that WaterAid does is lifesaving. Future dates: April 18
th, May 16th
at the usual time between 10.30
am and 12 noon in the Village Hall. All welcome! RH
______________________________________________________ ‘WORDS’, the inspirational poem written by Harry Pendleton’s grand-
daughter, Hannah, was printed in last month’s magazine. Unfortunately,
its final ‘punch line’ was missing for some reason. It is a tribute to her
grandmother, Wendy, who died in December. So Harry has agreed that it
should be put in this magazine once more, because without the punch line
the poem loses its significance. So here it is! RH
WORDS
If your eyes can see beauty in the ugliest of faces,
And your hands can paint it with the freest of precision
She’s there smiling.
If your ears can hear truth, in words no one else believes,
And you can make others hear it too,
She’ll be there, eyes bright.
If your heart can love, even when everyone around you is cold and frozen,
And you can share it without diluting it,
She’s there, holding your hand.
If you can believe in true equality,
Though we live in a world of discrimination and lost hope,
She’s there, believing in you.
If you can reach for the skies,
When all you’ve ever been told is that you’ll never fly,
She’s there, to be your wings.
If you can always give,
Even after you’ve given your all,
She’ll be there, to lend you what you need.
And she wouldn’t want me to say this, because she was humble right
through the middle,
But if I am ever half the person she was,
I know she’d be proud of me.
THORPE CHURCH PANCAKE SUPPER On Shrove Tuesday evening a pre-Lent feast was enjoyed by about 44 Thorpeans, consisting of 200+ savoury and sweet pancakes with a variety of fillings. Some ate only one or two whereas double figures were achieved by some of the young (and not so young!). Anyway the average consumption was 4.54545 each! That it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening was confirmed by the reluctance of people to go home! Thanks are due to Will & Sue Smith for spearheading the evening and also to the many others who so willingly helped in cooking the pancakes and in all the other jobs. Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, when Jack went to plough, His mother made pancakes, she didn’t know how. She tossed them, she turned them, she burned them quite black, She put in some pepper and poisoned poor Jack. As yet (48 hours later) no ill effects reported. DSH
Tissington NOTES FROM THE HALL MARCH 2011
OIL THEFTS
Some tanks have seen their oil reserves ‘gone missing’ from various tanks
around the village. Please be vigilant and lock up your oil as it is worth a
considerable value to the more nefarious in the neighbourhood.
OLD COACH HOUSE TEAROOMS
After an exhaustive six week renovation programme the Tearooms will be
open for business again from Saturday 3rd
March. We have added two
extra loos (at considerable expense) and a larger kitchen. The Coffee offer
is now exhaustive and will rival other local café experiences. Please do
visit and I offer a complimentary cup of tea or coffee to all Tissington
residents before the end of March. Ask Sally inside for details.
Main gates entrance at Tissington Safety
The Traffic Officer team have mentioned to me that a great deal of drivers
are ‘cutting the corner’ and entering the main gates at an angle making it
almost impossible for westward vehicles exiting the Village! Please only
turn right into the Village at 90degree right angles as this will make the
exit MUCH safer!! The Estate is still in negotiation with the authorities
about moving the gates back but more conversations need to be
undertaken.
Beech Tree at Beech Cottage
Sadly British Telecom have delayed the process of cutting these tress back
over the last few weeks. It is hoped that Ben King and his team can finish
the job in the next few weeks. Residents might like to know that the Estate
have planted many trees recently to make up for the loss of these
magnificent specimens.
Well Dressings 2012
Dates for this year are May 17- May 23 2012 with the Preacher being
Canon Andy Broom at the Service of Blessing on Thursday 17 May.

TISSINGTON VILLAGE HALL
At present the village hall resembles a building site, but Sam and his team are making good progress and the work should be finished for 1 April. You will no doubt be pleased to learn that the Trustees have found the money to have central heating installed, so there should be no worries about being cold next winter! Sally Rowe Secretary
Tissington Pre-School has been operating in the Bluebell Suite, Bluebell Inn, Tissington for about 18 months now. We now need to fill the following position: Position Vacant Pre School Deputy Leader Tissington Pre-School is recruiting a Deputy Leader to assist in the running of the Pre-School. Applicants must hold a qualification which is a minimum of NVQ level 3 in childcare or associated qualifications, it would be preferred if applicants have experience in a Pre-school setting. Normal working hours will be Monday and Thursday 8.45am till 12.45pm, term time only. To apply please send your current curriculum vitae to [email protected]. Closing date for applications is 20th March 2012.

will be issued when plans are more substantial.
