Big Issues?● Designing a PSOW for necessary skills/experience● When is the optimal time to do the IA?● Generating acceptable research questions (RQs)● Checking students’ readiness for IA● Providing acceptable levels of guidance for students● Rough draft feedback to students● Preparing samples for moderation● Others?

Optimal Time? Opinions vary. At JIS Physics goes early in year 2, then Biology (along with Environmental Systems and Societies) then Chemistry. As a chemisty, I like to get Oxidation and Reduction done before IA…

Ideas?

HL Chemistry Year-at-a-Glance Year 2 Schedule

Generating acceptable research questions (RQs) & Providing Guidance:● Our physics teachers use Google Classroom to have students periodically

generate RQs at different stages of the course and receive feedback on them. I intend to do that this year.

● I use Google Forms to generate a spreadsheet list of RQ, variables, etc. that I can check.

● Ideas?

Link to Google Form: If you want to use it, save a copy first. Then edit the copy. Otherwise you will be changing the master.

Checking students’ readiness for IA: I use the Google Spreadsheet generated from the form and a traffic light (green/yellow/red) system for communicating with students.

Google Form responses

● Red means “won’t work at all.”

● Yellow means “might work but needs major editing.”

● Green means “will basically work.”

Rough draft feedback to students: I used Adobe Acrobat Pro to give feedback. My colleagues are currently using Turnitin for feedback and they love it. Opinions vary but our policy is to never assign points (4 out of 6 for Evaluation, for example) at the feedback stage.

Preparing samples for moderation: Take them at their word. They are supposed to support the teacher when possible but they can only do it if we annotate and explain our marks.
