This guide describes the rich mix of exhibitions, performances, educational programs that Grounds For Sculpture off ers. There is plenty to do, see, hear, and taste, and none of it would be possible without you!

In coming months, you’ll see a great deal of activity at the park as we complete a massive construction project—a whole new Visitor Center in the Seward Johnson Center for the Arts. With gorgeous new galleries for exhibitions and smart spaces for workshops and other educational programs, it’s our way of acknowledging the critical value of our guests and listening to their feedback.

When completed in April of 2014, our visitors will enjoy improved amenities including a delightful new café, a new, beautifully appointed museum shop, and a lounge just for members….all designed to make your visit as enjoyable as it is memorable. Plus, we’re changing the way you arrive—no more waiting in lines. You’ll park fi rst and then pay inside.

In May, Grounds For Sculpture will present the largest exhibit in the park’s history. Seward Johnson: The Retrospective will feature over one hundred works by our beloved founder and will be a continuous celebration not to be missed. It will include a broad array of Mr. Johnson’s work including such iconic sculptures as his Forever Marilyn, The Awakening, and Daydream. The humor and humanistic insight that are the hallmarks of Johnson’s fi fty-year investigation of the visceral moment will delight and engage you as you explore the park’s bucolic landscapes, galleries, and other off erings.

nEw/s GFS PARTNERS WITH JERSEY CARES FOR ANNUAL COAT DRIVE!Grounds For Sculpture is excited to announce that it is a collection site for the Jersey Cares 18th Annual Coat Drive. Clean, gently used coats can be dropped off at Grounds For Sculpture’s entrance booth or Visitor Center, Tuesday through Sunday from 10am-6pm, through February 7th. In appreciation, each donor will be given a pass for free park admission to be used at a later date.

GFS COMMEMORATES NJ’S 350 ANNIVERSARY WITH PLENTY TO DO!We’re celebrating New Jersey’s historic 350th anniversary with programs highlighting the rich history and diversity of the Garden State. Our focus on sculpture exhibition views NJ through the lens of amateur photographers. The Black Maria film festival has promoted independent fi lmmaking in NJ for 30+ years. Our Day at the fair festival recalls our heritage as the longest running state fair in the country. The talented women behind our annual Poetry in the Park event all have deep NJ roots. And we’re conducting our own oral history Project, fi lled with memories of the NJ State Fair.

BE A PART OF GFS’ ORAL HISTORY PROJECT!What was it like to be at the NJ State Fair when it was here? In honor of New Jersey’s 350th anniversary in 2014, GFS will be conducting an oral history project centered on fi rst-hand memories of the State Fair. ATHENA TACHASculpting With/In NatureThrough March 30th

Renowned as one of the world’s leading artists in environmental sculpture and design of public spaces, Tacha is perhaps best known for creating places that evoke the grandeur of nature, even in the unlikeliest of urban settings. Working in a variety of media to create sculptures, drawings, photographs, films, and wearable body art, her small sculpture of archetypal canyons, volcanoes, caves, waves, and waterfalls are based on her lifelong interest in the forms of natural phenomena. Her large-scale photographs of wave and sand patterns offer unexpected fluidity against the constraints of their frames.

MusEuM BuIlDInG WILLIAM KNIGHT Out of Context Through April 13th

William Knight uses the shreds of blown tires that he finds along New Jersey highways to create his extraordinary sculptures. In his studio, he studies these remnants to find the aesthetic possibilities of their shapes, tears, and curves, until eventually the composition is resolved. The tire sculptures vary greatly in effect – from lyrical and melodic to audacious and exuberant. All of Knight’s sculptures produce remarkable shadows on the walls and floors to add a fourth dimension, an aspect of time and change. EDWINA SANDYS Provocative and Profound Through April 13th

Edwina Sandys began as a writer and started creating visual art in her early thirties – first painting and then sculpture. Sandys aim is to catch a viewer’s attention immediately with the visual power of her work and then again with the underlying theme. Her content is approached with deep consideration and brilliant wit. She fearlessly confronts issues from a female perspective. Sometimes her work is humorous or celebratory, at other times, it is piercing and grievous. She also unashamedly explores imagery that is erotic and sensuous, masterfully spanning the line between literal representation and an imagined reality.

FOCUS ON SCULPTUREJanuary 18 – April 13, 2014 Opening Reception: January 18, 4-6pmThis annual show is a juried exhibition of amateur photographers’ work featuring sculpture as their subject. In celebration of New Jersey’s 350th anniversary, this year’s exhibition features only images taken within New Jersey. The exhibition will be juried by Walter Choroszewski, a New Jersey specialist for over thirty years. Choroszewski’s photography of the garden state has been widely published in books, calendars, and brochures, and his fi ne art prints and murals are displayed in many New Jersey corporate locations and private collections.

ENABLING CREATIVITYMay 9 – June 15, 2014 In collaboration with Enable, Inc.—a local organization which enables seniors and individuals with disabilities to live full and independent lives in their homes and in the community—Grounds For Sculpture is pleased to present the artwork created by Enable participants during several hands-on art workshops at Grounds For Sculpture. Though some of the artists are non-verbal, their artwork is a creative expression which speaks for them.

RACHEL UDELLJanuary 15 – April 13The colorful, soft, and fl exible forms of Rachel Udell’s work seem to contradict their origin. The sculptures are a result of the artist’s attempts to come to terms with the extremes of human existence, the life of joy and the life of suff ering. To the artist, the notion that human beings are discrete and separate from one another is the cause of “man’s inhumanity to man.” To counteract this notion, the sculptures that Udell knits, crochets, knots, and ties become metaphors for the connectedness of all being in the world. They are delicate missiles launched to obliterate the experience of isolation. Udell frequently participates in exhibitions and art-based projects dedicated to raising awareness of human traffi cking worldwide.

The GreenLight series returns with a new exhibition in Sept., 2014.

Featuring more than 120 sculptures by artist and GFS founder Seward Johnson, The Retrospective will include work in every indoor gallery and many new works out in the park, including the much-anticipated monumental land sculpture titled The Awakening, sited in The Meadow. Joining his internationally admired large-scale works such as Forever Marilyn will be dozens of key works comprising the “Icons Revisited,” “Beyond the Frame,” and “Celebrating the Familiar” series. These notable sculptures will be joined by Mr. Johnson’s lesser known but perhaps most intimate work—a collection of trays upon which he has painted landscapes and moments of great personal meaning to him.

EXPLORING ATHENA TACHA’SUSE OF MODELING

Saturdays, February 8 and 15, 10am-1pm In this unique workshop, experiment with 3D modeling and printing technologies to create your own sculptural model. Students will gain inspiration by viewing the work of exhibiting artist Athena Tacha, who creates 3D scale models in preparation for her large landscape installations. After learning about scale and proportion, each participant will create the components of their own miniature installation in clay. Before the next class, their clay components will be laser scanned and printed using a plastic compound. On the second class, students will fi nish and assemble their 3D components into a completed landscape model. Alternate fi nishing techniques will be discussed. Explore the bronze casting process used by Seward Johnson in many of his sculptures! You’ll learn several strategies utilized in creation of sculpture patterns, including life-casting, wax-modeling, direct burnout, and lost-wax casting. Taking the work of Seward Johnson as inspiration, each participant will create a unique bronze sculpture, starting with a wax original and going through the process from start to finish. Participants will learn via direct modeling in wax, discussion, and observation of the other casting stages.
