Friction stabilisers provide instant ground support and offer the advantage of a single pass installation.


1.1 Friction Stabilisers

Friction stabilisers are made from high tensile steel that is roll-formed into a tubular section containing a continuous longitudinal opening along the length of the tube. A steel ring is fixed to the collar end of the tube and when the stabiliser is installed onto the stabiliser plate it establishes a compressive force against the rock. The ring-in combination with a pull collar also enables load testing once the bolt has been installed. The tapered end of the friction stabiliser enables easy insertion into the drilled hole. Friction stabilisers can also be manufactured with no taper for installation direct into paste.

The compression of the tubular shape of the bolt into a slightly smaller diameter hole generates a load transfer from the steel to the rock. The tubular shape of the bolt enables increased contact of the steel against the rock generating radial pressure and creating frictional resistance to the pull-out load of the tube from the hole.

When additional load bearing capacity is required, friction stabilisers can be grouted.

Once installed load pull-out capacity can be tested as required by attaching a pull collar to the steel ring fixed to the collar end of the friction stabiliser and measuring with a pull testing unit. Friction stabiliser bolts can be installed with either hand held or mechanised equipment such as Jumbos.

1.2 Friction Stabiliser Range

Fero Strata friction stabilisers are manufactured in 33, 39 and 47mm diameters and various lengths. Lengths typically range from 600mm to 3000mm in 300mm increments. Other lengths and customised product to suit specific requirements are available on request. Fero friction stabilisers are available in galvanised or untreated steel in packs of 150 or 300 for 33mm stabilisers.

33mm Stabiliser The 33mm friction stabiliser is primarily used to establish ground support when hand-held mining operations (Air Leg mining) are required.

39mm Stabiliser A 39mm stabiliser is primarily used for securing strata mesh by installing into existing 47mm Friction Stabiliser in conjunction with a smaller plate. Longer lengths are also used as primary ground support when drilling smaller diameter holes.

47mm Stabiliser The 47mm friction stabiliser is used as a primary support in mechanised jumbo development and production mining.

3.1 Stabiliser Plates

Fero manufactures a range of stabiliser and duplex plates for use with friction stabilisers, wriggle bolts and cable bolts.

Fero Strata stabiliser plates are designed in-house and quality tested to a high-load capacity to provide optimal surface support in a range of ground conditions. Fero stabiliser plates are available to suit any bolt type and diameter in the Fero range. Strata plates most typically used with friction stabilisers are:

125 or 150 Stabiliser Plate A general purpose plate, both the 125 and 150 stabiliser plates are manufactured from 4mm material to suit 33mm and 39mm friction stabilisers; and can be used with a 47mm friction stabiliser. The dome assists in stabiliser alignment and provides additional strength. The hanger lug provides support of service products.

300 Duplex Stabiliser Plate The duplex plate is a 4mm thick 125 or 150 stabiliser plate welded to a 1.9mm thick 300 x 280mm strata plate, the pressed rib sections in the 1.9mm material provide additional strength and minimise deformation upon installation. The Duplex plate gives greater surface coverage when supporting strata-mesh or when used directly on rock surface. User friendly round edges for increased safety and mesh protection.

200 or 225 Stabiliser Plate A specialised plate, the 200 and 225 stabiliser plate is also manufactured from 4mm material. The 225 stabiliser plate was developed as a cost saving alternative to the duplex plate. The 225 plate provides slightly less surface coverage than the duplex plate. However, as it is made entirely from 4mm material, it provides higher grade coverage over a larger surface area than the larger 1.9mm material area of the duplex plate.

The plate is designed to deform during the installation process to prevent damage to strata- mesh and to minimise point loading of the ring. The 200 or 225 plate is typically used with 47 mm stabiliser but can also be used with 33mm and 39mm friction stabiliser. Dual hanger lugs provide extra versatility for support of service products.

300 Strata Plate This lighter gauge 1.9mm plate is used when greater surface coverage is required in fractured ground. The plate is manufactured with four pressed rib sections on the outer perimeters of the plate to provide more strength to the lighter gauge material. The 300 strata plate can be used with any size bolt and in conjunction with smaller diameter plates


3.2 Driver Tools

Fero supplies a full range of purpose designed driver tools for use with both mechanised and hand-held bolting equipment. Fero driver tools and spiral bar are manufactured from high grade heat treated steel. Threading meets Australian Standards AS1275. Fero Driver Tools are supplied loose per unit. Other packing quantities are available on request.

Driver Tools for Fero friction stabilisers include:

33mm Stabiliser Driver Tool The 33mm stabiliser driver tool fits directly into the chuck of the hand-held unit and is available in male and female configurations to suit the 22mm hex adaptor.

39mm & 47mm Stabiliser Driver Tools Our 39 or 47mm stabiliser driver tools are attached to the rock drill by a spiral bar. This allows the stabiliser driver tool to extend outside the front centraliser for ease of installation of friction stabilisers. Available in an R38 or T38 thread.

Spiral Bar The spiral bar is manufactured with a cold rolled thread over its entire length and supplied in standard lengths of 3100mm or 3600mm. The spiral bar is cut to the desired length on the mine site and used as a joiner between the rock drill and the 39mm and 47mm stabiliser driver tool.

3.4 Pull Testing Collars

The pull collar is placed on the friction stabiliser during the installation process to enable the load capacity of the bolt to be pull tested and verify the effectiveness of friction stabiliser upon completion of installation and periodically over time. Fero Strata supplies either carbon hollow bar or forged pull collars to fit 33mm, 39mm and 47mm diameter friction stabilisers. Available untreated or hot-dip galvanised in packs of 50.

The diameter of the drill hole is critical for ensuring the effectiveness of the friction stabiliser. A bit gauge is used to measure the diameter of the drill bit which drills the hole for the friction stabiliser to be inserted into. The drill hole diameter should be slightly smaller (typically 2-4mm smaller) than the friction stabiliser to be used. In soft ground it may be necessary to further reduce the bit size to increase contact between the steel and the hole thus generating greater load transfer and increasing pull-out load.

3.5 Pull Testing Unit

Pull testing equipment is essential to verify friction stabiliser and other rock bolt system performance. Fero supplies both hand operated and battery operated pull testing units for in-situ testing of most rock bolt systems. The unit is easily transportable. Alternatively, the Fero Strata technical service team can provide full underground pull testing services.

Wriggle Bolts are a simple and effective system that enables resin bolting in large holes for long-term support.


1.2 Wriggle Bolts


It is Fero’s unique wriggle system that makes this bolt so effective. The distorted or wriggled section of the bolt increases the effective diameter of the bolt in order to maximise load transfer and assist in resin mixing. The end-shear assembly assists in shredding resin packaging to eliminate gloving. The wriggle section of the bolt assists in mixing the two component polyester resin capsules – resulting in a solid anchor and additional load transfer. Fero Wrigglebolts are offered with a continuous hot rolled T20 or T25 thread over the entire length of the bar or with a rolled 250mm left hand M24 thread.

Fero also manufacture and supply a de-bonded wriggle bolt. The de-bonded section on the wriggle bolt T20, T25 or N24 prevents grout or resin setting around this section of the bar, allowing for the bolt to yield under strata movement.

Manufactured and supplied from Fero Strata’s Perth and Brisbane operations, wriggle bolts are supplied with a pinned nut and dome ball washer as standard and are bound with steel strap and timber packaging for safe transport. The pinned nut eliminates the need to store loose inventory and provides a ready to use torque nut.

Fero wriggle bolts are manufactured to meet Australia’s high quality standards and are extensively quality tested in-house. Field testing has proven the wriggle bolt to be highly effective in both manual and mechanical operations. Our galvanised product provides additional protection in corrosive environments.

1.2 Wriggle Bolt Range

Fero manufactures and supplies wriggle bolts in a thread bar and deformed bar version with a rolled left hand thread in a range of lengths from 1.2m to 3m or can be custom-made to suit various ground conditions.

The type of ground where wriggle bolts may be used should be evaluated to determine the correct length and diameter of wriggle bolt required. The wriggle bolt system will provide a higher load capacity in unstable ground and soft strata may require a longer anchorage length. Pull tests should be performed to determine yield and resin anchorage capabilities.

Wriggle Bolt T20 and T25 Manufactured as a continuous hot-rolled thread, the 20mm and 25mm thread bar provides support in a variety of hole depths in all ground conditions. The continuous thread on the entire length of the bolt provides greater flexibility when tensioning in a range of hole lengths.

Wriggle Bolt N24 The deformed bar has 250mm of rolled left hand thread providing more threads per centimetre, and a greater load capacity. Fero wriggle bolts are available in galvanised or untreated steel in packs of 100.

Wriggle Bolt De-Bonded The de-bonded section on the wriggle bolt T20, T25 or N24 prevents grout or resin setting around this section of the bar, allowing the bar to elongate when placed under yield.

3.1 Strata Support Plates Range

Fero Strata manufactures and supplies a range of support plates for use with wriggle bolts including:

150mm Dome Plate Dome Plates are primarily used when increased load capacity is required. It is the dome shape of this 150 x 8mm general purpose plate that increases the load capacity. Dome Plates are primarily used in conjunction with domed barrel and wedge or a dome ball washer in the installation of solid bolts and cable bolts. Fero can also supply dome plates in a range of thickness and size as per customer requests.

Duplex Franklin Plate The Duplex Plate is a 5mm thick Franklin Plate welded to a 1.9mm thick 300 x 280mm strata plate, the pressed rib sections in the 1.9mm material provide additional strength and minimise deformation upon installation. The Duplex Plate gives greater surface coverage when supporting strata-mesh or when used directly on rock surface. User friendly round edges for increased safety and mesh protection.

Franklin Plate Fero’s Franklin Plate is another purpose designed product developed in-house. The Franklin Plate is a 5mm ribbed support plate that provides a high load capacity but is more cost effective and stronger than the similar load bearing capacity 8mm dome plate.

This high load and ribbed support plate is used in conjunction with a domed barrel and wedge or dome ball washer in the installation of wriggle bolts, solid bolts and cable bolts. The ribs provide additional strength to the 5mm material, enabling the plate to carry loads in excess of 200kN – therefore eliminating the need to use an 8mm dome plate.


Hanger Nuts

Fero supplies a full range of purpose designed driver tools for use with both mechanised and hand-held bolting equipment. Threading meets Australian Standards AS1275. Fero Driver Tools are supplied loose per unit, with other packing quantities available on request. Driver Tools for use with Fero Wriggle bolts include:

Resin Bolt Driver Tools Used for mechanised installation (jumbo) of wriggle bolts and other solid bolts that come standard with a pinned nut. Resin Bolt Drivers are available in R38 or T38 thread and in various lengths (Standard lengths 500mm, 600mm, 720mm and 900mm; with other lengths available upon request and to suit different Hex nut sizes.

Fero can also apply standard driver tools for use with Air-Leg mining equipment. The driver tool is inserted directly into the Air-Leg chuck.

3.2 Driver Tools 3.3 Resin Anchors

Resin anchors are used to secure wriggle bolts and solid bolts to provide roof support in underground mining and tunnelling. Fero supplies an extensive range of resin anchors to suit all types of bolting patterns and strata conditions. (See Resin brochure for more details)

3.4 Resin Anchor Insertion System

Various size tubes and lengths available to suit a range of resin diameters. The insertion system ensures quick, safe, efficient insertion of the resin capsule into the hole. (See Resin brochure for more details)

Resin AnchorDriver Tool

Available in both D series and W series, hanger nuts screw onto the thread of the solid bolt to support cabling and other services. Various nut size and thread combinations are available to suit any rock bolt in the Fero Strata range. We can also customise hanger nuts to suit various applications. Threaded Bar Bolts are effective in both manual and mechanical operations and can be installed with either resin or cementitious grouts.


1.3 Threaded Bar Bolts


Fero manufactures and supplies threaded bar bolts with a T20, T25 or T32 left-hand continuous thread profile. The continuous hot rolled thread provides good load transfer properties and a high flexibility in fragile ground and various hole sizes.

Fero also provides a conventional Rebar Threaded bar bolt manufactured from N24 deformed bar provided with a cold rolled left-hand thread (on one or both ends of the bar), that provides more threads per centimetre, resulting in a greater load capacity. The N24 deformed bar can be used with mechanical anchors.

Threaded bar bolts can be supplied with a combined pinned nut & dome ball washer or loose with components (nut and dome ball washer).

Manufactured to meet Australia’s high quality standards, Fero Strata quality tests all products to make sure they meet if not exceed these standards. Our threaded bar bolt products are tried and tested in the field and are proven to be highly effective in both manual and mechanical operations. Dome Plate Dome plates are primarily used when increased load capacity is required. It is the dome shape of this 150mm x 8mm general purpose plate that increases the load capacity. Dome plates are primarily used in conjunction with domed barrel and wedge or a dome ball washer in the installation of threaded bar bolts and cable bolts. Fero can also supply dome plates in a range of thickness and size as per customer requests.

300 Strata Plate This lighter gauge 1.9mm plate is used when greater surface coverage is required in fractured ground. The plate is manufactured with four pressed rib sections on the outer perimeters of the plate to provide more strength to the lighter gauge material. The 300 strata plate can be used with any size bolt and in conjunction with smaller diameter plates.

Franklin Plate Fero’s franklin plate is another purpose designed product developed in-house. The franklin plate is a 5mm ribbed support plate that provides a high load capacity but is more cost effective and stronger than the similar load bearing capacity 8mm dome plate.

This high load and ribbed support plate is used in conjunction with a domed barrel and wedge or dome ball washer in the installation of wriggle bolts, threaded bar bolts and cable bolts. The ribs provide additional strength to the 5mm material, enabling the plate to carry loads in excess of 200kN – therefore eliminating the need to use an 8mm dome plate.

Duplex Franklin Plate The duplex plate is a 5mm thick fanklin plate welded to a 1.9mm thick 300 x 280mm strata plate, the pressed rib sections in the 1.9mm material provide additional strength and minimise deformation upon installation. The duplex plate gives greater surface coverage when supporting strata-mesh or when used directly on rock surface. User friendly round edges for increased safety and mesh protection.


3.4 Driver Tools

Fero supplies a full range of purpose designed driver tools for use with both mechanised and hand-held bolting equipment. Threading meets Australian Standards AS1275. Fero Driver Tools are supplied loose per unit, with other packing quantities available on request. Driver Tools for use with threaded bar bolts include:

Spin Adaptors Spin adaptors are used to install threaded bar bolts supplied without a standard pinned nut. Primarily used for hand held installation with Air Leg, spin adaptors are available in female configurations to suit the 22mm Hex adaptor.

Resin Bolt Driver tools Used for mechanised installation (jumbo) of wriggle bolts and other threaded bar bolts that come standard with a pinned nut. Resin bolt drivers are available in R38 or T38 thread and in various lengths (Standard lengths 500mm, 600mm, 720mm and 900mm; with other lengths available upon request and to suit different Hex nut sizes.

3.2 Nuts – Mining

The nut is attached to the threaded end of the bolt and is used to secure the plate during the installation of rock bolts. Fero also offer a one piece Dome ball nut which assists with better alignment of the bolt and plate, as well as eliminating the need to carry two inventory items on site (nut & dome ball washer). Fero nuts are available in a range of sizes and thread directions (both left-hand and right-hand thread). Nuts can be supplied untreated or hot-dip galvanised which is recommended in corrosive environments. Standard sizes in table below with other sizes readily available.

3.3 Dome Ball Washers

The dome ball washer is used in conjunction with the nut and the compatible dome plate. The dome ball washer assists in better alignment of the bolt and plate and maximising of load transfer. Standard sizes in table below with other sizes readily available.

Fero supplies various size tubes and lengths available to suit a range of resin diameters. The insertion system ensures quick, safe, efficient insertion of the resin capsule into the hole (See Resins brochure for more details).

Couplers enable bolts to be joined to enable longer length bolting in confined spaces. Primarily used when headroom is limited, bolts are threaded from each end of the coupler so equal bolt threading is obtained. Manufactured from high tensile steel and available untreated or hot-dip galvanised.

Resin anchors are used to secure wriggle bolts and threaded bar bolts to provide roof support in underground mining and tunnelling. Fero supplies an extensive range of resin anchors to suit all types of bolting patterns and strata conditions (See Resins brochure for more details).

3.8 Hanger Nuts 3.9 Mechanical Anchors M16, M20 & M24

Available in both D series and W series, hanger nuts screw onto the thread of the threaded bar bolts to support cabling and other services. Various nut size and thread combinations are available to suit any rock bolt in the Fero Strata range. We can also customise hanger nuts to suit various applications. Standard sizes are depicted below with other sizes readily available.

Quick and easy to install, mechanical anchors provide immediate point anchored load bearing support and are best suited to medium to hard rock types. Once inserted in the hole at the end of the threaded bar bolts or eye bolt, the mechanical anchor is tensioned. Load bearing capacity will depend on ground type.

1.4 Cable Bolts


Manufactured using 15.2mm compact strand, cable bolts are available in single or twin strand options at pre cut lengths or as continuous roll of single strand at various lengths.

Cable bolts can also be supplied with bulbed sections in various configurations per metre. The bulbs provide radial confinement once grouted. This is achieved through the grouted bulb section acting as a wedge resulting in an increased effectiveness of load transfer.

Fero also supplies mechanical anchored cable bolts, which have been designed for areas where immediate support is required. The mechanical anchored cable bolts can be tensioned immediately and grouted at a later stage. Tensile strength does not reach capacity until the grout has completely cured. In competent ground, the specially designed mechanical anchor supports the ultimate tensile strength of the strand.

Garford Cable Bolts are designed and manufactured to international quality accredited standards: ISO:9001 and Australian standards: AS/NZS 4672.1.2.

1.0 Cable Bolts Cable Bolts have been used extensively in mining and civil construction around the world since the early 1970s. Garford is the main supplier of Cable Bolts in Australia and Fero is an authorised distributor of Garford products.

1.2 Cable Bolt Range

Fero supply a full range of Garford 15.2mm compact strand cable bolts, including single and twin, plain or bulbed and both 15.2mm compact plain strand mechanical anchor and compact ball-bearing mechanical anchor cable bolts.

Pre-cut 15.2 mm cable bolts are supplied as a single unit complete with a fish hook to anchor the cable into the borehole prior to grouting. Fero also offer continuous cable rolls up to 1300m in length.

Cable bolts can also be supplied pre-assembled with grout and breather tube attached.

Mechanical Anchored Cable Bolts Mechanical anchored cable bolts have a specially designed mechanical anchor, and provide a 300 Kn minimum ultimate tensile strength. Two types of mechanical anchors are available to suit either a 48mm or 64mm hole. Mechanical anchored or compact ball-bearing mechanical anchor cable bolts can be used when the bond between the plain strand and the grout is not sufficient to transfer the full potential load to the bolt. The compact ball-bearing mechanical anchored cable bolt is bulbed, with ball bearings inserted into the bulbs, and can be fully tensioned without the bulbs collapsing.

Supplied in any required length and in coiled bundles of 50, with other packing quantities are available on request.

Plain and Bulbed Cable Bolts Commonly used to supplement existing strata reinforcement, plain and bulbed 15.2mmm compact strand cable bolts are available in a variety of precut lengths or in continuous rolls. The bulbed diameter ranges from 26mm to 28mm with up to 6 bulbs per meter available. The diameter of the bulb can be altered to meet individual requirements. Individual lengths of up to six metres are strapped in bundles of 50. Individual lengths of six metres and over are coiled in bundles of 25. Other packing quantities are available on request.

Cable bolts can be debonded on request for use in yielding ground conditions.

Dome plates are primarily in conjunction with domed barrel and wedge or a dome ball washer in the installation of solid bolts and cable bolts. Fero can also supply dome plates in a range of thicknesses and sizes as per customer requests.

Used to secure the cable bolt against the plate and rock surface, Fero’s flat and dome barrel and wedge provide support at the collar of the hole and are available to suit various cable diameters.

Flat barrels and wedges are used for the installation of flat plates, while dome barrels and wedges are available to suit dome plates when anchoring cable bolts. The dome barrel allows the cable bolt to distribute the load evenly on the plate when pre-stressed. Wedges can be supplied in 3-leaf or 2-leaf configurations with an o-ring or circlip. Wedges are machined with serrations on the inside which are case hardened allowing the wedge serrations to grip onto the cable during the pre-stressing process.

Flat Plates Available in standard sizes of 8-12mm thick and from 150mm to 300mm, with 22mm hole diameters and either one, two holes or slot holes, this general purpose plate is used with flat barrel and wedges in cable bolt installations. Fero can also supply flat plates in a range of thicknesses and sizes as per customer requests.


3.4 Breather & Grout Tubes 3.6 Cable Bolt Tensioner

Manufactured from high-density polyethylene material to resist abrasions and crushing, breather and grout tubes are usually used to pump cementitious grouts for rock and cable bolt applications. The breather tube works in conjunction with the Grout Tube to allow air to escape from the bolt hole and provides a positive indication of grouting progress. Standard sizes are available with other sizes readily available.

Fero supplies industry standard hydraulic 10 Tonne & 25 Tonne tensioners designed for 15.2mm cable bolts. Manufactured to withstand the demands of underground mining, the tensioner is designed to tension 15.2mm cable up to 10 or 25 tonnes and can be used for 12.7mm cable. The unit has an operating pressure of 80-120psi, weighs approximately 8kg and has a standard 3m length hose and a pressure gauge to enable accurate tensioning. Fero also offer a full range of spares to suit cable tensioners such as jaws, seal kits, nose cones, scraper seals and jack inner guide.

Cotton waste is used to bung holes to prevent grout escaping.

3.3 Grout Anchors

Cementitious anchoring grouts are used to secure cable bolts and solid bolts and as well as general strata injection and consolidation applications.

Fero’s cement anchoring range includes products suitable for manual and mechanised bolt grouting. Cement anchoring grouts should be mixed with potable water. Cement grouts should be stored in original packaging in dry conditions. High temperature or humidity may reduce the shelf life.

Fero Strata Plates offer optimal surface support when used in conjunction with Fero friction stabilisers, wriggle bolts, solid bolts and cable bolts.


2.1 Strata Support Plates


Fero strata plates are designed in-house and quality tested to a high-load capacity to ensure optimal surface support in a range of ground conditions. Each plate type is available in a range of dimensions to suit any bolt type and diameter in the Fero range.

All strata plates are available with hanger lugs for the support of service products and are available untreated or hot-dip galvanised for protection of the plate in corrosive environments. Field testing has proven Fero Strata plates to be highly effective.

Strata plates are manufactured to our strict quality standards, and meet if not exceed Australian quality standards and are subject to stringent in-house quality testing.

Fero Strata has also been developed as a research and development unit and can assist in the development of specific product requirement. The 225 stabiliser plate is an example of this. Having been developed as a cost effective alternative to the duplex stabiliser plate for a specific client the plate is now a staple in the Fero strata plates range.

125 and 150 Stabiliser Plates A general purpose plate, both the 125 and 150 stabiliser plates are manufactured from 4mm material to suit 33mm and 39mm friction stabilisers; and can be used with a 47mm friction stabiliser. The dome assists in stabiliser alignment and provides additional strength. The hanger lug provides support of service products.

The Duplex plate gives greater surface coverage when supporting strata-mesh or when used directly on rock surface. User friendly round edges for increased safety and mesh protection.

200 and 225 Stabiliser Plates A specialised plate, the 200 and 225 stabiliser plate is also manufactured from 4mm material. The 225 stabiliser plate was developed as a cost saving alternative to the duplex stabiliser plate. The 225 plate provides slightly less surface coverage than the duplex plate. However, as it is made entirely from 4mm material, it provides higher grade coverage over a larger surface area than the larger 1.9mm material area of the duplex plate. The plate is designed to deform during the installation process to prevent damage to strata-mesh and to eliminate point loading of the Friction Stabiliser ring. The 200 or 225 plate is typically used with 47 mm stabiliser but can also be used with 33mm and 39mm friction stabiliser. Dual hanger lugs provide extra versatility for support of service products.

Fero Strata Mesh and Strap are designed to provide additional underground surface support when rock bolting.


2.2 Strata Mesh & Strap


Strata Mesh, Strap and W-Strap are used in conjunction with friction stabilisers and other rock bolts to provide additional coverage in ground conditions where bolts and support plate cover is not sufficient. The ability to overlap the products enables continuous coverage of the rock surface.

Fero Strata Mesh is manufactured in house at our Perth and Brisbane manufacturing facilities using the latest in electric resistance welding technology. This enables Fero to manufacture Strata Mesh up to 6 metres in length and 2.4 metres wide, and to customise product in a range of configurations to assist in optimising bolting patterns. The mesh is manufactured with minimal overhang of line and cross wires to eliminate material handling injuries on site.

Strata Strap is used in conjunction with friction stabilisers and rock bolts to provide additional ground support by increasing the area of support provided and conforming to major irregularities in the rock. Fero’s strata strap range includes W-Strap and Strata Mesh Strap, which was developed as an alterantive to conventional W-Strap whereby the wire construction allows for simpler hole alignment. Strata Mesh Strap can also be supplied with an arch for use in shotcreting of pillars.

To ensure a consistently high quality product, Strata Mesh is weld-shear tested in-house every 300 sheets and torque tested every 50 sheets.

Strata Mesh and strap are available in untreated steel, pre-galvanised or hot-dip galvanised.

Strata Mesh & Strap Strata Mesh is primarily used in conjunction with rock bolts when additional support is required in underground mining and tunnelling. The mesh straps are pulled into the rock surface by rock bolts and conform to irregularities in the rock. Ranging from 4-8mm diameter linewire and crosswire with standard 100 x 100 apertures, Strata Mesh can be customised to suit specific mine site requirements. The wire construction method of the strap allows greater flexibility in hole alignment and fit to the irregularities with the rock surface. Can be supplied in bright wire, galvanised or hot dip galvanised coatings

W-Strap Fero W-Strap is rolled from 1.9mm steel coil and shaped to form a ‘W’ with multi-holes spaced 300mm apart. The W shape of the strap grips the rock surface and increases the area of support when used in conjunction with rock bolts. W-Strap is supplied in standard lengths of 2.4m, 3m and 6m with other lengths available on request and can be supplied in un-treated pre-galvanised or Hot Dip Galvanised coatings.

Chain Link Mesh Chain link mesh offers an economical and durable solution for underground surface support. Fero offers chain link mesh in a standard galvanised finish in a variety of continuous roll size configurations to suit specific mine requirements. Standard widths include 1.8 and 2.4m and standard length rolls 10m, 15m and 20m.


The ground support mesh manufactured and supplied by Fero Strata for both domestic and international mining markets is manufactured under strict controlled conditions to meet the stringent requirements of mining ground support applications.

The ground support mesh manufactured at Fero is subjected to rigorous in-house testings (refer to table below). These tests are conducted at our Western Australian based Laboratory located at our Kewdale facility as well as periodic testing at NATA accredited laboratories, ensuring compliance is met and maintained.

3.1 Specialised Grouts


1.1 FeaturesFero’s Strata’s cementitious grout range includes products suitable for manual and mechanised bolt grouting and backfilling and cavity filling.

High Yield Grout not only provides a high volume yield, it is easy to mix and place and rapid setting provides a quick seal. While Fero Strata Cable Bolt Grout S is a thixotropic grout providing a high strength and long life product.

Cement based anchoring grouts should be mixed with potable water and should be stored in original packaging in dry conditions. High temperature or humidity may reduce the shelf-life.

Fero Strata grout anchoring products are manufactured to meet Australian mining industry requirements.

Fero Strata Cable Bolt Grout S is a thixotropic grout used to anchor cable bolts and other rock bolts in top down grouting of long tendons.

The low viscosity of the product restricts flow to surrounding areas ensures low wastage, but maintains excellent pumping properties. Providing a good bond to steel the product provides a high ultimate strength and durability to ensure a long life.



2.1 High Yield Grout

The strength and density of the grout is determined by the powder to water ratio. In general terms, the lower the water to powder ratio the higher the compressive strength, density and durability of the grout.

It is recommended that laboratory and field testing is undertaken to determine optimum yield as results can be affected by variables such as the type of pump used, its efficiency and the rate of pumping; water content and quality; ambient temperature; volume of grout placed and placing techniques.

Mixing and Placement Fero Strata recommends high yield grout be mixed and placed with suitable grout mixing and pumping equipment.

Any regulation of the pump must be done prior to and during filling to ensure uniformity of the product.

Mixing and Placing Cable Bolt Grout S is a ready to use powder requiring only the addition of clean potable water. The water to powder ratio is determined by the desired grout consistency. An average guide is 7-8 litres of water per 20kg bag. Avoid using excess water and discard material that has been left standing for more than an hour.

When placing, the grout is pumped into the filling tube until the bore hole is completely filled, encasing the cable or rock bolt.

Any remaining grout should be removed from tools, pump and lines immediately after use with clean water.

2.2 Fero Strata Cable Bolt Grouts

The thixotropic qualities of the product restrict flow to surrounding areas, ensuring low wastage, and it offers the advantage of providing excellent pumping ability.

A working time of more than one hour at 20°C makes the cleaning of the pump and hose easy.

Shotcrete admixtures work to alter the viscosity of cementitious materials to provide flexibility when shotcreting.


3.2 Shotcrete Admixtures


Accelerators reduce the time of the shotcrete curing process and make spraying of concrete on vertical and overhead surfaces possible. Rapid setting assists with early strength development and maximises the performance of this form of ground support. Shotcrete stabilisers extend the useful life of the shotcrete and plasticisers are added when water reduction characteristics are required.

Fero supplies a range of shotcrete admixture products including accelerators, stabiliser, plasticiser and mix enhancer to meet the demands of the mining and construction industries. All shotcrete admixtures are supplied in liquid form.

Application details It is recommended that site trials be undertaken to determine the correct dose rate required as dosage rate can range from 1-5 litres per cubic metre depending on requirements.

ME2000 ME2000 is a unique liquid polymer chemical admixture specifically designed for use in pre-mixed wet shotcrete. ME2000 enhances the mix by increasing the stickiness of the shotcrete and making it more cohesive, which reduces rebound and assists when spraying overhead. The density of the product is approximately 1kg per litre at 23 degrees Celsius.


Shotcrete Stabiliser

Application details Add the required dose of ST2000 to the shotcrete mix with the head water at the batch plant. Ensure product is distributed evenly in the shotcrete mix.

It is important to note that ST2000 should be added prior to adding any plasticisers.

ST2000 Fero Strata ST2000 is a liquid admixture that suspends the cement hydration process in shotcrete; thereby extending the shotcrete’s useful life without effecting performance. ST2000 enables the hydration process to be reactivated several hours or even days later, allowing on-site transportation and flexibility.

Shotcrete Super Plasticiser

Application details The dosage rate of SP2000 depends largely on the extent of flow and water reduction required. In general, SP2000 should be added at approximately 400 - 1000mls per 100kg of cementitious material.

It is recommended that on-site trials be undertaken to determine correct dosage rate.

SP2000 SP2000 is a ready to use liquid high range water reducer commonly known as Super plasticiser for use in shotcrete. SP2000 can be used for all pre-mixed shotcrete where high flow ability and water reduction characteristics are required. SP2000 is suitable for tunnel linings and underground mining applications. It is also suitable for concrete in civil works.

1.1.2 Driver Tools for use with Fero Wriggle Bolts & Solid Bolts include:Spin Adaptors Spin adaptors are used to install solid bolts supplied without a standard pinned nut. Primarily used for hand held installation with Air Leg, spin adaptors are available in female configurations to suit the 22mm Hex adaptor.

Resin Bolt Driver Tools Used for mechanised installation (jumbo) of wriggle bolts and other solid bolts that come standard with a pinned nut. Resin bolt drivers are available in R38 or T38 thread and in various lengths (Standard lengths 500mm, 600mm, 720mm and 900mm; with other lengths available upon request and to suit different Hex nut sizes. Fero can also supply standard driver tools for use with Air-Leg mining equipment. The driver is inserted directly into the Air-Leg chuck.


1.2 Spiral BarThe spiral bar is manufactured with a cold rolled thread over its entire length and supplied in standard lengths of 3100mm or 3600mm. The spiral bar is cut to the desired length on the mine site and is used to connect the rock drill and the 39mm or 47mm stabiliser driver tool.

1.3 Pull Testing CollarsThe pull collar is placed on the friction stabiliser during the installation process to enable the load capacity of the bolt to be pull tested. This will verify the effectiveness of the friction stabiliser upon completion of installation and periodically over time. Fero Strata supplies both carbon hollow bar or drop forged pull collars to fit 33mm, 39mm and 47mm diameter friction stabilisers. Available untreated or hot-dip galvanised in packs of 50.

1.5 Drill Bit GaugeThe diameter of the drill hole is critical for ensuring the effectiveness of the friction stabiliser. A bit gauge is used to measure the diameter of the drill bit which drills the hole for the friction stabiliser to be inserted into. The drill hole should be slightly,smaller (typically 2-4mm smaller) than the friction stabiliser to be used. In soft ground it may be necessary to further reduce the bit size to increase contact between the steel and the hole thus generating greater load transfer and increasing pull-out load.

1.6 Cable Anchors (Barrel & Wedges)Used to secure cable bolt against the plate and rock surface, Fero’s flat and dome barrel and wedge provide support at the collar of the hole and are available to suit various cable diameters.

Flat barrels and wedges are used for the installation of flat plates, while dome barrels and wedges are available to suit dome plates when anchoring cable bolts. The dome barrel allows the cable bolt to distribute the load evenly on the plate when pre-stressed. Wedges can be supplied in 3-leaf or 2-leaf configurations with an o-ring or circlip. Wedges are machined with serrations on the inside, which are case hardened allowing the wedge serrations to grip onto the cable during the pre-stressing process.

1.14 Nuts - MiningThe nut is attached to the threaded end of the bolt and is used to secure the plate during the installation of rock bolts.

1.18 Cable Bolt TensionerFero supplies industry standard hydraulic 10 tonne & 25 tonne tensioners designed for 15.2mm cable bolts. Manufactured to withstand the demands of underground mining, the tensioner is designed to tension 15.2mm cable up to 10 or 25 tonnes and can be used for 12.7mm cable. The unit has an operating pressure of 80-120psi weighs approximately 8kg and has a standard 3m length hose and a pressure gauge to enable accurate tensioning.
