That’s right. THE armor modeling event in the U.S. is heading to Dayton, Ohio, the home of the U.S. Air Force Museum! Our theme this year is ‘Mishaps and Oh Crap!’ Tanks get in all sorts of predicaments, so we hope to see lots of creative entries.

Enter your models in the competition and get the feedback and reinforcement from your peers. You may even be rewarded with a Gold medal or be among the recipients of 14+ special awards.

Our seminars connect you with experts in the field that will inspire you to finish that stalled project. Enjoy presentations on military vehicle history and research.

Modeling vendors come from all over the U.S. and abroad so you will no doubt find that book, accessory or model you’ve been looking for.

September Meeting demo: Painting Waffen SS Camouflage by Erik Roberson

The Waffen SS issued camouflage before the start of WW2 and constantly developed new patterns and phased out older ones as the war progressed. If you want to paint the camouflage, first do a little research to determine the appropriate pattern based on the period. Erik recommends the book ‘Camouflage Uniforms of the Waffen-SS’ by Michael D. Beaver, Schiffer Publishing and ‘Modelling Waffen-SS Figures In 1/35 scale’ by Calvin Tan, Osprey Publishing. Both are not currently published and may be hard to find.

Here are the notes from the demo.

The camouflage was screen printed onto cotton twill, which was then cut apart into the pieces that would assemble into the final garment. Variations in production and assembly resulted in unique combinations. For instance, the sleeves were assembled apart from the body so the pattern is slightly off. Foliage loops were made from material scraps so they didn’t match.

For the sake of simplicity, Erik chose the ‘Eichenlaubmuster’ or ‘Oak Leaf’ Spring pattern on a smock for the demo. The smock was reversible as the seasonal needs dictated.

• Erik uses a 3/0 paintbrush, Vallejo paint and Liquitex Slo-Dri Blending Gel.

• Vallejo has a Waffen SS Camouflage paint set for if you don’t already have a collection of the paint.

• Erik pins the figure in the foot and the other end of the pin is glued with CA to to a soft drink bottle cap. The cap is then screwed on to the bottle, which serves as a handle to support the painting hand. The bottle can be filled with sand for weight.

• The tunic is painted without the arms or equipment in place. This allows access to all surfaces. The arms and equipment are painted separately and any touch up done in final steps.

• Be careful about the scale of the camouflage. Study your references and make the pattern to scale with your subject.

• The basic formula for the paint is 12 drops of color, 4 drops of Slo-dri and 4 drops of water.

• The figure is primed with Vallejo’s Black Primer.

• The first color used as the base is Vallejo Saddle Brown.

• The dry brushing technique is used to mark highlights. It is used primarily as an aid for the painting yet to come and is mostly invisible on the finished product. For this highlight color, Erik uses equal parts of the base (Saddle Brown), Sunny Skin Tone and German Camouflage Brown.

• Once the dry brushing is dry, paint the ‘islands’ of color, largest to smallest. Erik starts with Black Green. Note the boundaries of the pattern that exist. In this style smock, the lower sleeves are from a different pattern so there is a demarcation line where the patterns don’t match up. The same goes for the pocket flaps.

• The next color applied is the light green, working around the dark green dots that are already there.

• The final color is a medium brown that is less prevalent than the two greens.

• Highlight with 4 drops of German Camouflage Beige mixed with the base of Saddle Brown.

• A dark brown pin wash of Scale75 Intense Chestnut softens any harshness and pulls out the detail in the crevices.

• The final step is a dull coat to kill any shine.

Trumpeter Bundeswehr Fennek

by Tabb Tharrington

in 1:35 scale

This one is 99% done. The kit was nice with a full interior and lots of photo-etched brass detail inside and out. Tabb replaced the wheels with versions from DEF Models. Tabb added straps (spare photo-etched brass) and the anti-slip texture (Rustoleum

Multicolored Texture spray paint). The door’s glass protection is photo-etched brass screening with a tape frame. In the wheel wells, the dust deflectors are obtained from cosmetic eye lashes.

Bob gave the armor plates a texture by stippling on Tamiya liquid cement. He also added weld lines by softening the plastic with Tamiya liquid cement and scribing with

a dental pick.

Meng Israeli Achzarit

by Glen Martin

in 1:35 scale

Glen said that the kit is very nice but it has been modified using parts from another Achzarit kit. The T-55 wheels were replaced with Centurion wheels to represent the later version. The fit was close but some modifications were necessary on the hull

mounting points. The kit’s tracks were replaced with separate link ones from Model Kasten. Some details were reconstructed from styrene and wire and a ‘doghouse’ from another kit was added to the commander’s cupola.

Figures

by Frank Blanton

In 1:35 scale

As time allows, Frank assembles and paints figures for future projects. These

represent many different manufacturers. Some are styrene and some are resin. Most of the styrene figures have had their heads replaced with new ones from Hornet. Resin figures often have tiny bubbles from the casting that have to be filled. Gun slings

will be added using lead foil. Manufacturers interpret scale size differently, so you must keep this in mind when mixing them in a scene.

The kit was a pain because nothing fit well and the instructions were not useful. It is still a work in progress.

by Scott Bregi

in 1:35 scale

Scott modified the missile mounting hardware so that it could move from a

stowed position to a deployed one. It is possible despite no mention of it in the instructions. Turret locking tabs were added to keep it from falling out of position. On the missile mount arm, the grooves were modified to represent weld lines by laying in Slater’s rod, softening it with liquid

cement and then texturing it with a hobby knife. The kit’s styrene umbilical cables were replaced with flexible hose and coiled springs so it will move with the missile mount. No tow cable is provided but the hull mounts are present. Scott made a tow cable using SKP cable and Eureka XXL ends.

Dragon German Panther Ausf. A

by Tabb Tharrington

in 1:35 scale

Tabb finished this work by adding snow to the groundwork using products from Tamiya: Diorama Texture Paint--Snow Effect and Diorama Texture Paint--Powder Snow Effect.

The powder version worked out okay with a nice, crystalline effect but the other turned yellow on the base.

by Erik Roberson

In 120mm

The boots and arms are separate parts but are keyed for perfect fit. The ammunition belt is flexible for accurate positioning. Slings were added to the gas mask canister and the MG42. Erik used a combination of small styrene strip and lead foil. The tunic was painted using Vallejo’s Field Grey set. The holster was painted Vallejo

Leather Brown, sprayed with chipping fluid, sprayed black and then the black was dissolved away with water. The MG stock was painted Tamiya Buff, washed with Raw Umber artists’ oil paint, streaked with more Raw Umber and then lightly sprayed with Transparent Yellow and then Orange.

Dragon US T67A2 Flame tank

by Mike Petty

in 1:35 scale

This is an AMPS website review but Mike is making sure it accurately represents the real vehicle. The kit’s DS material tracks are installed for the review but will be replaced

with AFV Club tracks. The rear engine grills and drive sprockets were replaced with more accurate versions from DEF Models. The kit’s DS material mantlet cover and MG cupola cover had seams that were difficult to remove, so replacements were sourced from DEF Models. Mike raided a M103A2 kit to get the correct aiming sight. The

bustle rack was very difficult to construct and flimsy. Mike shored up some pieces with styrene and added photo-etched brass mesh. A tiny but noticeable detail Mike added was the screw heads on the turret roof.
