Now in its twenty-third year, the ever-growing event that brings out an audience in excess of 24,000 is ready to show off another six fnalists. SFRQ is a force to be reckoned with, a staple in the annual high school calendar. Its become an institutional rite of passage in its time; the magic is far reaching and has touched a great number of the artists who have grown up to make the soundtrack of contemporary New Zealand. Dont be fooled by the fence that rock implies about the genre of this competition; alumni range from Minuit to Nesian Mystik, The Black Seeds, Kids Of 88, The Checks, and The Datsuns a list that doesnt even fll the caboose of this success train. Groove Guide got in to check the pulse of the competition before the lights go on and Cambridge calls noise control on what will be a spectacularly loud night for the Tron. The acts arent shy about revealing what makes them tick. The Beatles pop up a few times as an infuence, but what stands out is a passion for music, an articulate nature and age defying thought. Although his music doesnt come across quite like hers, Massad notes the free nature of Jessie J in his inspiration as well as the whole package that is Muse. Music is in Massads blood: My mum is a piano teacher. I started playing piano and violin when I was four or fve, he reveals. Being the only solo act in the fnals, Massad likes the ability to be free and able to go crazy in performance. He describes his music as experimental quirky pop, and more pop.The Velvet Regime are a tight indie-alt band. They are made up of Nigel Martinez and Joel Averes, who entered last year with then drummer Stacey, who left but introduced them to Stefan Poad and Jason Reder. Martinez says theyre lead by a passion to create their own music. It helps create a way to say things you cant normally. Musics a whole different language. Theyre inspired by a whole lot of different types of music, and their songs come from jamming.A Bit Nigel formed last January; already good mates, it just happened. Lead guitarist and vocalist Hamish Nixon likens their sound to a clean fusion of indie, pop and rock. Nixon is the principle songwriter, but Sam Marshall and Manawa Veitayaki work the foundations he puts in place. This is the youngest act their lyrical content is happy and theres certainly talent in their veins. Theres two different components to our song writing, he explains; the music and the lyrics develop separately. Hattingh puts The Beach Boys and Radiohead down as sound infuences, but for them its about making unrestricted, creative and expressive free music. (Many of ) the bands you see in pop are restrictive, he says. Their intention is to disprove the commercial theory by being unrestricted.Georgia Nott says The Peasants brought in three more people due to the departure of their guitarist after last years SFRQ success. This has helped them to develop a bigger sound that is more epic. For the second year in a row this (now) seven-piece is the only act in the fnal with females. But it doesnt make things different for them. Hoping to get exposure from the competition and have an industry member come up and say, Hey you guys are really good is this bands aspiration. Nott describes their music: Epic melody verging on rock. Its hard to describe though. You should come up with a new word!Veterans amongst the other acts, Whakatane High Schools three-piece Attic Skys think it is pretty awesome to make it to the fnal in their third year of SFRQ. We never thought wed get this far, says bass player and vocalist Riley Brightwell. He describes their sound as melodic alternative punk and reckons a high-energy stage presence is their point of difference. The band is democratic, writing lyrics that are all relevant to Brightwell, guitarist Miles Sutton and drummer Ollie Butler. If previous years talent is anything to go by, you cant help but expect to see these names again.SMOKEFREEROCKQUEST 2011 GroovEGuiDE.co.nz | 11A stranger is coming, hes driving a commodore. Its the opener to a new single you might have had the luxury of hearing. The entrancingly catchy tune From A Friend To A Friend isnt from any old musical stranger though; nope, anything but. You might have even found yourself tapping away to the new music video Tell Me What You Want. Yeah? Then you started dancing, just cause? Awesome. Well Ill tell you something: those are the lucid new tunes from some of this countrys favourite children. You recognised one of those the voices? Yup, it sure is Neil.Finn is a name synonymous with the New Zealand and Australian music industries, one that just cant help but lead to glistening gold. The airwaves are ready, after what seemed like forever, for that shiny touch to storm back into the nation this time waving the banner of Neil and wife Sharons latest project. Pajama Club are a step away from the instant hits that mind-google returns. There are a few moments that conjure feelings similar to those Split Enz did, but dont be fooled this is nothing like Crowded House or the former. Just to add some more drool to your mouth, the duo has also joined forces with Sean Donnelly (SJD), and powerhouse drummer Alana Skyring (The Grates). Impressed? You should be. We caught up with Sean Donnelly to talk about the new old kids on the block.Pajama Club began as a private racket fuelled by a sensible supply of red wine at the Finn residence. It quickly transpired into something a bit more than a riotous after-dinner jam. What came out was something THE KITTIESPAJAMA CLUBPACK YouR BAGS, THIS oNES GoING To BE AN oVERNIGHTER.WriTTEn By JusTin foWLEr12 | GroovEGuiDE.co.nzfresh. Neil is quoted as saying, We were having a great old time making noise, but we didnt think too much about it until we started playing some of it back and found ourselves dancing. Keeping in theme of this well fated dinner, Sean Donnelly adds that he turned up for dessert: Im the icing on the cake. What helps give this project its fnesse is Neil Finns ability to exude that world-famous Kiwi ingenuity and willingness to just give it a go. The Finns humble after-dinner expression of their passion for music sparked something truly wonderful. While Neil and Sharon jammed and recorded it, Donnelly started cutting and pasting what the pair had conjured up. It was quite linear, I played with the verse and chorus affairs, he says. Four to fve songs came out of these initial sessions. And well, now it has blossomed into an 11-track LP and left the privacy of the Finns house for everyone to enjoy.Pajama Clubs self-titled debut is not even out yet, but its quickly attracting attention. We discovered it communicated to a wider audience, Donnelly notes of an album that started out for Neil and Sharon. Already having their own massive fan bases, these accomplished musicians are not dubious about releasing this album. The fans are always going to be the frst to tell you if they dont like it, muses Donnelly. Theres not much to worry about though, because the entertaining sound of Pajama Club is already piquing the interest of new and old audiences alike.Although Donnelly and Finn have only briefy worked together in the past, the collaboration was a success. Neil is a great guy to work with. He is so open to trying different things, comments Donnelly. The reality is his interests are very wide. Something that makes working with Pajama Club stand out for Donnelly is the collaborative process involved; creating this album was a very team oriented affair. They all work on songwriting together, rather than knocking something up and having someone else bring along the fnishing touches. Although Sharon is a lesser known musician, Donnelly says she is a great singer and really knows how to passionately play the bass.Alana Skyring lends her famous name and well-loved talent to the get-together for touring. There are two tentative touring dates for New Zealand in Auckland and Wellington at the end of September. But there is speculative intention for a wider touring. With the new super group already being well received, why wouldnt they? The group has already successfully played packed out rooms in the UK and Australia. Donnellys enthusiasm for Pajama Club is as infectious as the sound; he whispers that there is intention to take the collab further. Pleasing news for those already climbing into their PJs. Its only fair that I delve into one of my most anticipated game releases for this year.First looks at Rugby World Cup 2011 reveal a polished user-friendly menu system that benefts from the world in union theme playing in the background, and the menus get you to the action reasonably quickly. The game has addressed key areas that I found lacking in earlier rugby games such as more fuid controls, and more importantly the pace the game is played at, which feels more match-like as opposed to the more pedestrian nature of earlier rugby efforts. Theres something refreshing about the quick little one-off passes keeping the ball tight in amongst a rampaging forward back, only to throw a slightly delayed skip pass out wide and seeing your creatively named winger diving across in the corner. While most impressions of the gameplay are generally positive, Weve just seen the release of the new installment of sony Computer entertainment and insomniac games Resistance on Playstation 3. The frst two incarnations of the game took off, and were excited to see what this one can deliver.Following the previous games, Resistance 3 is also set in the alternate universe of 1950s alien-invaded Earth. Our main man Joseph Capelli is once again the star of the story and will no doubt run into loads of Chimeran dickheads to shoot. As with any franchise follow-ups there are some new inclusions, and it looks like Capelli can head to Africa to lay down the hurt on those aliens who so sorely need it. Although with 90% of the human population laid to waste, were not sure how many people hell be bumping into.rugbY World CuP 2011XboX 360Join the resistanCegAme reVieWits hard to look past the glaring lack of some licensed teams. Im a red blooded New Zealand rugby fan and to be playing the offcial World Cup game with players named E. Harper (#10 Dan Carter?) and A. Morgan (#7 Richie McCaw) leaves me feeling short changed. These minor grumbles aside I can safely say the $119 (RRP) is well spent. Like me Im sure youll revel in the pride of guiding your team to victory against the console-controlled opposition.WRITTEN BY ARNIE DEBEERIn the geekiest fashion, what got us nice and excited was the teaser video online. For a game set in the 50s, the stylisation and colour scheme of the clip is perfectly apt. Its no Dead Island trailer, but it works for the plot and gets a nod from us.RESISTANCE 3 FOR PLAYSTATION 3 IS OUT NOW.gAmingAlbum revieWsThe Weeknds second album is a drug-fuelled haze of sex and heartache. After releasing House Of Balloons earlier this year, Abel Tesfaye went from obscurity to god-like worship. On Thursday, the Toronto based singer further broadens his soundscape. Instead of trying to repeat the success of his previous work, he ditches the catchy hooks and trash talking by revealing a more emotional side. His falsetto glides effortlessly over atmospheric production on tracks like Lonely Star and Rolling Stone, and he briefy firts with reggae during Heaven Or Las Vegas. Even Drake makes a worthy appearance, somehow managing not to bore the ears off the listener with his usual cheesiness. While its not as instantly rewarding as its predecessor, Thursday has enough great moments to continue The Weeknds cult-like buzz. Look for the third part of this sacred rnb trilogy at the end of year. WRITTEN BY JIMMY NESSthe weeKnDllllThUrsDAyZach Condon is one of those kids you should just really hate. its this kind of unbridled jealousy that has made him so revered. Under the nom de plume of Beirut, Condon takes the simplest and most effective sounds from all over the globe and creates very other-worldly music with them. After two critically successful records (and a number of EPs) under his still waifsh and youthful belt, Condon has returned, complete with trademark soaring baritone. This time though, he has trimmed all the superfuous fourishes and dense orchestrations and makes a point of returning to his staple diet of piano, horns, ukulele, the occasional organ and rollicking drums to provide propulsion, striving for the greatest amount of beauty with the smallest amount of resources and he succeeds. An exercise in self-restraint, The Rip Tide is something Condon should be proud of adding to his canon. And we, as listeners, should love him all the more for it.WRIITEN BY JAMES A. ROBINS Despite shifting seven million copies, the 28-song double album Stadium Arcadium was an undeniably bloated affair. An abundance of mid-paced tracks on Im With You doesnt entirely dismiss these concerns, but with a new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer (replacing a disinterested John Fruiscante) there is a sense of renewal, if not surprise. The rhythm section Chad Smith and the inimitable Flea remains the bands greatest asset, as evidenced on The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie (their fnest single in years) and the emotionally-charged Brendans Death Song. Unfortunately the mid-tempo tendencies give the album an overall sluggishness, highlighted when they fnally let rip about halfway through on the super-speed freak-out Goodbye Hooray. A little more of this energy would make a better package, but with great production from Rick Rubin and excellent cover art from renowned British artist Damien Hirst, there will be plenty here to keep Chili Peppers fans content. WRITTEN BY CHRIS POLEi forgive you all for writing male Bonding off after the tin-can-in-a-cardboard-box production on their debut. Its all the more reason to delve in to the riotous depth of their second effort Endless Now. They draw effortlessly on early 90s guitar pop with unashamed abandon (recording sessions with Rivers Cuomo aside), roping in ex-Dinosaur Jr. producer John Agnello, which should go some way to describing the frentic energy of the London-based trio. Theres added space on this record, thankfully, and enough armrest-room for the sheer brilliance of each vocal melody to shine through. Because, underneath the walls of fuzz, Male Bonding are simply a pop band misguided as they are drawn to ear-friendly tunes just as much as they are to sheer volume. This is how every second album for a young band should turn out: stronger, bolder, with added depth, without copious piles of orchestral backing. Male Bonding are on the cusp of something great.WRITTEN BY JAMES A. ROBINSAuckland rock heavyweights Kerretta return with their follow up to 2009s critically praised Vilayer. Theyre still formidable in the ways of instrumental rock, from their bruising beats to the incendiary guitar leads. A Ways To Uprise is the perfect anthem to the apocalypse and marches with venom in its stride. Even though the album sounds more spacious than its predecessor, it still has plenty of grunt when needed. The brilliantly titled Kept From The Brilliance Of The Outer World is both ferocious and blissed out, marrying together the bands key strengths of intensity and ambiance. Troughs of jarring noise are always balanced out by peaks of thunderous joy, and the drumming is spectacular throughout the album with some Polynesian percussion creeping into Bloodlines. Saansilo may not be as imposing as Vilayer but it is more of a wayward sister-piece that is commendable in its ambition. The good Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman and Olivia Wilde pull of impressive performances, given the wooden script theyre given to deal with. The most satisfying product of the movie is seeing Reynolds and Bateman embody the characteristics of the other while in each others bodies. Unfortunately this is the only enjoyable part of the movie. The Bad The main problem with this flm is it is entirely predictable. Theres not one good surprise or plot twist throughout almost to the point where you know how its all going to end so you dont bother caring about the adventure. The gross-out humour is well overused these days with the recent flms like The Hangover Part II and Bridesmaids, but this just reinforces the fact that there is very little to like about this movie FURTHER INFO DIRECTED BY DAVID DOBKINSTARRING JASON BATEMAN, RYAN REYNOLDSshit Worth WatChingllbeyond its charismatic stars. A worthy companion for your rehabilitation is Greg Proops, The Smartest Man In The World. The frst Smartest Man In The World was released in late October last year and has been continuing on with a new episode every fortnight or so. Greg Proops, best known here for Whose Line Is It Anyway, is at his verbose, referential and sharp-tongued best in this hourish-long podcast. Its a far cry from goofy props and cringe-inducing hoedowns. The format is simple: Mr. Proops takes the stage and records what is, for all intents and purposes, a new hour of stand-up each episode. The material is constantly shifting between well-formed bits, crowd interaction and tangential meanderings. The show can sometimes feel less like a traditional stand-up set and more like a collage, fragments cut from the periphery of pop culture and pasted into a careers worth of stories. inTerneTFURTHER INFO THE SMARTEST MAN IN THE WORLDSTARRING GREG PROOPSLISTEN TO FULL EPISODES AT SMARTEST.LIBSYN.COMavailable for DownloaD from SmarteSt.libSyn.com or the itUneS Store.UD ad Groove Guide hori.indd 1 9/09/2011 12:13:28 p.m.A good place to start your dalliance with The Smartest Man In The World is close to home.Take a listen to Bluffs, recorded a few months ago at the Fringe Bar in Wellington during the New Zealand International Comedy Festival. Its heartening to hear an outsiders delight with green-lipped mussels, befuddlement at Kiwis endemic shyness and utter disbelief that Richard OBrien could have made it through 1950s Hamilton alive, plus a few honest digs at the Prime Minister. One word of warning Proops ability to hold sway over a full room for an hour at a time, with new material on each occasion, will make you feel like a lazy, ineffectual wallfower.
