Grobe’s has some new tools to assist you in renovating and improving your existing turf. Firstly, for many years now Grobe’s has used an exclusive cus- tom blended grass seed to overseed and improve client lawns, but it’s never been available in smaller quantities. Our Fast Thickening Grass Seed is a quick germinating blend of three top quality and durable varieties that are proven to grow and fill in those bare patches fast, and it’s now available in smaller 1-kg bags. To see how to overseed properly, check out the video on our website. This year we are also introducing our best 5-Step Perfect Lawn Program ever. Unlike many other ‘packaged fertilizer deals’, this is a complete balanced program with valuable micronutrients that also incorporates the latest technology in nutrient delivery and sustainability. The stabilized nitrogen is more eco-friendly as it includes enzymes to prevent nutrient loss to the soil or atmosphere (it means the grass plant uses all the food), and it feeds even when there is minimal mois- ture present. The program has lots of iron to make the lawn a deep dark green, it’s simple to do, ‘goof-proof’ (you won’t burn the lawn even if you apply the summer feeding during the highest heat of summer) and it is rich in sustainable organic matter for improved turf drought tolerance. Finally, all new grass seed requires moisture to germinate. With new Turf Starter RTU you will be able to gently water and feed the new grass with a perfect seed starter fertilizer (7-12-3 formula) in every moistening with a convenient and easy to use hose end attach and spray applicator. Stakes Alive! It’s important for new trees to have some sort of support to keep them straight until the roots from the root ball have rooted in- to the adjacent soil. This usually takes about a year, and perhaps a bit longer if the soil is really heavy. What is more important is to remember to ‘un-stake’ these trees after that time to ensure that the tree does not become dependent on the stake for sup- port. Some movement of the tree en- sures that the trunk becomes strong and able to hold the tree upright during stronger winds as it gets older. And, it’s important too to ensure that no wire or tree collar is left on the tree to cause future girdling injury (as shown). New Plants in 2013! Here is a brief summary of just some of the exciting new plants available at Grobe’s this year, each certain to bring beauty to your yard. A more extensive listing with colour images can also be found now in the plant galleries section of our website. TREES

Planting a unique tree species not onlydifferentiates your garden, it contributesto a genetically diverse urban tree cano-py. This helps to prevent against thepotential large-scale loss of trees due topests or diseases (like we’ve seen withtrees like native Elm or Ash). To plantsmart – plant something different! Some ‘different’ species this year in-clude the compact and brightly seededRuby Slip-pers AmurMaple, state-ly EuropeanBeech, newRedbudsRising Sun(shown) andRuby Falls with unique very golden or-ange or deep ruby red new foliage, aswell as a limited number of very rarenative Kentucky Coffee Trees. Fornarrower spaces there is the highly di-sease resistant white Adirondack ordeep red/pinkRoyal Rain-drops Crab-apples, prettyand fruitlessHilleri Pyrami-dal Ornamen-tal Cherry , fra-grant and nar-rower Boulevard Japanese Lilac, andthe very narrow new Kindred SpiritPyramidal Oak. Finally, we arepleased to be one of the few Ontariogarden centres to offer the new MarianJarvie Ornamental Peach (shown), ahardy stunner without fruitnamed after a prominentOntario Master Gardener, that blooms pink like Flow-ering Almond in spring.

ROSES

The newest variety to ourcollection of 18 ‘no spray’disease resistant Easy Elegance Rosesis beguiling ‘Calypso’ (peach pinkshown). Other new hybrid varieties

include peachy ‘Easy Does It’, longlasting red ‘Timeless’ and from thesame folks who brought you Explorerroses, a new bicoloured Artist seriesshrub rose called ‘Campfire’ . New alsoare Drift series roses – hardy dwarfhybrids of mini-roses crossed withhardy shrub roses, with distinctive anddelicate mini-rose blossoms.

SHRUBS

This year’s highlights include whitebridal bouquet reminiscent SnowDay Surprise Pearl Bush and newSummer Ice Daphne (similar to thepopular Carol Mackie Daphne, butwith fragrant all season blossoms). You can now place a bright yellowspring flowering forsythia anywhere inthe yard with the ultra dwarf Show OffSugar Baby, and the new everbloomingSonic Weigelas will delight with their

showy blooms that continue toappear all season long. Summer islooking even morecolourful and flowerywith new bronze-orange leaved ‘Am-ber Jubilee’ Nine-bark and floriferousHydrangeas like red-

pink reblooming Tuff Stuff and dwarfBobo (with white flowers so thick you

can barely see the plant) as well as withhuge flowering Fiji Rose of Sharontoo. Finally, you can add colour with thefruit of shrubs too, as shown with newRed Balloon Viburnum and stunningpink Candy Sensations Snowberry. For Japanese Maple lovers, two tonedred/purple ‘Purple Ghost’ and ultraskinny-leafed ‘Red Pygmy’ are rareadditions to the 20 beautiful varietiesavailable this year.

ANNUALS,PERENNIALS& FRUIT

Last year thebig story in theUnited States

was the emergence of impatiens downymildew, a lethal disease of impatiensthat can also affect future plantings. Toensure this doesn’t become a problem inyour garden, Grobe’s this year offers theDivine series of mildew resistant impa-
