EDITION V VOLUME I

Daniel McIntyre is a school that has limitless talents not only in sports, but in music as well.

This talent is exhibited in the song writing workshop led by Ms. Grobb, for the Winnipeg Folk Festival’s Musical Mentors Program.

The workshop is based on the principle of having a voice and being able to express it freely through the vehicle of song writing.

This program is to help those that need to express their voice and to

help them rise from their troubles. Ms. Grobb was a performer in

the Galaxie Young Artist stage a few years ago. For that reason, she was a no brainer for the choice of mentor in Daniel McIntyre…. continued on page 3

‘Grobb’ A Handful of Talent . By: JC Cruz

(Continued from front page) She decided to join the

program because song writing is one of her passions.

She is a very talented musician and composer, meaning that this job is suited for her talents.

When asked why she did this, she said “I saw the unfolding of something special.” indicating that the process of writing music is an experience to be had.

She said that this program provides collaborating opportunities for the kids, musician or not, and the ability to inspire each other to be able to bring something more into the song.

Students Dakotah Pisiak, Justina Richard, Carley Blaydon, Sidney McLeod, Ian McLeod, Marc Ibalio, Mitzi Genzola, Jessie Espinosa, Meldrick Agravante, Hera Nalam and JC Cruz were key components into the process in the creation of this song.

When musicians from the school were brought into the program, the song-writing blossomed into something special.

“Your talent gave this song its wings.” was one of the few things she said when the kids from the music program joined the other kids in the group.

Ms. Grobb said that this process is an invaluable tool for

expression. There is something beautiful in music that just can’t be derived from somewhere else.

This workshop is not solely led by Ms. Grobb, most of the students in the program have also contributed. This is not just a fun experience for the students and for Ms. Grobb, but this also gives students the opportunity to let their voices be heard.

The song will be recorded on Friday, April 25th and will be put on an album for the Winnipeg Folkfest collection. The Festival runs through the second week of July.

Pictures of Our Success . By: Fatimah Al-Mafrachi

Grad photos are taken every year at DMCI during the month of April. Hundreds of grade 12 students sign up in the guidance office to take those memorable pictures. This year grad photos were taken during the week of April 14th to 17th and the cost was $55 dollars or $60 with a year book and an additional $10 for minor touch-ups. The grad photos staff and helpers faced some problems with the photos this year. Photos taken from the first two days were lost due to a technical fault. Students who had their photos taken in the first two days had to do a retake which didn’t make students happy.

Some students were complaining about the price of the pictures, because not everyone could afford it. Another problem that made the grade 12 students complain was the long wait to take the pictures. On the bright side, there was a good amount of students helping with the grad photos and assisting students. There is a yearbook included and it’s really cheap for students to order. The quality of the pictures are really good for such a reasonable price. Grad photos are worth taking during high school. They will always be

a

memory for the students who will graduate and face the real world. They will always be a reminder of how wonderful high school experience was and how proud of yourself you are for finally making it through 14 years of school.

Dan the Man Says You Can Can . By: Daniel Igne-jajalla

On the top floor of University of Winnipeg, a stairway to a small room is where you’ll meet some of the most likeable people.

Since the beginning of January, I’ve been volunteering at the University of Winnipeg radio station, CKUW 95.9. CKUW is a community based radio, which means most of its members are comprised of volunteers. Initially, I started interning there for school and I enjoyed it so much I eventually decided to stay and volunteer.

I find that in volunteering there are so many skills you can

acquire and learn from other people. I have learned so much from the music director, David Tymoshchuk. From how to use a microphone and how the radio industry works.

The people is what makes the experience for me.

People from all walks of life coming together to share their passion they have; music.

Most of the people there work a regular 9 to 5 job are committed and dedicated to get music to the public. What makes CKUW such a cool place to volunteer at is having the freedom as DJ to play whatever music

you want. Each DJ has their own personal taste which makes each show distinct from another. One show could be playing hip hop and the next show could be playing folk. No one at the station is required to play the same music each hour. The main thing I do at the station is cataloging Cds, vinyl and cassettes. Cataloging music is similar to the system of cataloging books, but you can’t take out any of the music. I would first put a number on the album and a sticker to verify what type of genre it is.

After that, I would put all the information on a computer database. This job is really fun because you never know what type of music you’ll get. Before I volunteered here I never knew that Christian Gangsta Rap existed. Volunteering means more than just a credit you get in school. It’s the people you meet and things you encounter that make it great. It’s never too late to volunteer, opportunities are right around the corner!

Happy (B)Earth Day . By: Fatimah Al-Mafrachi

Earth day is an annual event that is celebrated on April 22nd. More than 192 countries participate in making the planet more environmentally friendly.

According to Wikipedia, about four million Canadians, including nearly every school-aged child participate in an Earth Day activity in their communities. The very first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22nd, 1970. This day was created by American senator, Gaylord Nelson, to make people aware of the importance of keeping our planet healthy and clean.

On April 22nd, people promised to help the environment and make positive changes in their community.

Since 1970, more than 500 million people in over 192 countries have participated in Earth Day activities.

Earth Day is a day where we can bring awareness to what we can do to live in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

For the years to come, you can help make the world more environmentally friendly by doing the following these environmentally friendly tips:

Earth Day Tip # 1: carry your own reusable bottles instead of plastic bottles. Stainless steel and polycarbonate drinking bottles are both non-toxic and super durable.

Earth Day Tip # 2: Turn water off

when not in use. Canadians use

about 343 liters of fresh water per

person per day, more than 11 times

the amount used in countries like

Denmark.

Earth Day Tip # 3: once a week, plan

a meat alternative for dinner.

Reducing meat consumption

conserves fresh water, saves topsoil,

and even reduces air pollution.

Earth Day Tip # 4: Recycle, Recycle, Recycle! If an office building of 7,000 workers recycled all of its office paper waste for a year, it would be the equivalent of taking almost 400 cars off the road. Earth Day Tip # 5: choose natural, non-

toxic cleaning products. Make simple, natural cleaners with ingredients like vinegar, baking soda and water.

Follow these tips and you can

help make the world a more

environmentally friendly place.

“The environment is where we all

meet; where all have a mutual inter-

est; it is the one thing all of us share”

Fly Me To the Moon . By: Kimberly Dominais

The evening sky brought thrill and fright to many observers as the moon was displayed as a reddish-orange globe in a recent astronomic event called “blood moon”, a type of lunar eclipse.

This eerie evening display has given birth to many folktales and superstitions. But first, what exactly is it In the scientific community, a lunar eclipse results from the alignment of the earth, the sun and the moon. Due to this configuration, the moon becomes centred in the Earth’s shadow. Light, from the sun, is then blocked, therefore giving the lunar eclipse its signature reddish-orange look.

The occurrence of four simultaneous lunar eclipses, without partial eclipses in between, is called a blood moon. Although termed

consecutive, these events actually occur in steady intervals—every six lunar months.

For many years, the advanced scientific principles of these events were explained through supernatural causes. Through these came the birth of countless folktales we now enjoy to tell around the campfire. Whether you believe in the power of the moon or not, its influence on cultural literature is a guaranteed treat to hear.

In the ancient Egyptian culture, lunar eclipses were associated with bad omen. It is thought as the event in which the moon is swallowed by the sky. Being a people whose religious patronage heavily involved the sun, such disturbance to daily progressions became very troublesome.

In ancient Rome, lunar eclipses were thought to be from the casting of demonic shadows on the lunar disc. In an attempt to drive away the demons, the Romans screamed and made terrible noises during these events Such is also true for the ancient Chinese, in which lunar eclipses were believed as the attacks of a legendary celestial dragon on the moon. To drive the dragon away, the

Chinese banged on drums and pots to also make loud noises. Of course, who could forget the werewolves? Perhaps the most iconic moon-related tales, werewolves are said to transform from man to werewolf on the eve of a full moon.

During eclipses, however, they are said to be most vicious. Werewolves lose complete sense of humanity and embrace the savage essence of a true wolf. Their vicious attacks are said to be preceded by lone howls.

Countless religious phenomena relate to lunar events, with particular emphasis on lunar eclipses. Whether your evening blood-orange globe is accompanied by loud noises or lone howling, it is up to you to believe.

Legends, tell-tales as they may be, could have originated from a truth that simply became distorted. They could be the purest form of truth society chooses not to accept. They could be behavioural tools, used to prevent children from misbehaving. Or, they could simply be the product of a very wild imagination.

Although its roots are very vague, one thing remains true. Folktales, legends, tell-tales, and all their other names, shape the cultural identity that increases human diversity.

But with all theory aside, I think we can all agree on one thing. Legends just make great campfire stories. Wouldn’t you agree?

South Korean Disaster . By: Daniel Igne-jajalla

South Korean President, Park Geun-hye commented on the ferry incident saying, "The actions of the captain and some crew members were utterly incomprehensible, unacceptable and tantamount to murder."

On April 16th 2014, a ferry going to Jeju in South Korea tilted. During the time many people could not escape due to the Captain’s instructions, leaving them trapped in the inside of the ferry.

323 passengers on board were students from Danwon High school going on a trip. The Captain, Lee Joon-seok and three other officers was arrested for a number of charges.

Lee did not let passengers leave the lower deck to evacuate until 30 minutes had passed, a questionable decision to some.

At a press conference Lee justifies his actions by saying

“At the time, the current was very strong, the temperature of the ocean water was cold, and I thought that if people left the ferry without (proper) judgment, if they were not wearing a life jacket, and even if they were, they would drift away and face many other difficulties,”

Lee also added “The rescue boats had not arrived yet, nor were there any civilian fishing ships or other boats nearby at that time.” At the time of the incident, a rookie sailor was steering the boat without Lee’s supervision. Lee would later return to the boat when things went awry.

The captain somehow managed to be the first one to leave the ferry.

Ahn So-hyun, wife of the one of the crew members said “His last words were, ‘I'm on my way to save the kids,’” those were the words he last texted his wife.

Ship members took action once more when a passenger, Koo Bon-hee, said that there were not enough life jackets to go around on the third floor where he was. Four crew members gave up their life jackets to the other people on board.

As of April 21st more bodies were found and now the death toll has exceeded 100. However, there are still

people missing. Search efforts are still looking other passengers that have not been found. About 200 rescue boats, 35 aircraft, and 13 fishing boats were deployed to find the other passengers. The strong currents of the water makes the search even harder for the search team. In Jindo, near where the accident took place, parents of the Danwon High School students wait for news of their loved ones.

Where’s The Beef? By: Asham J. Cooke

8

It's the age old question that aspiring vegans or full time vegans get hit with: “Where do you get your protein from? You need meat.”

Well, it's about time that myth is debunked, and the myth exists as a result of early childhood conditioning anyway, on a psychological level.

We were always told we needed "meat" on our bones to be big and strong.

However, there's an abundance of evidence that proves that isn't necessarily the truth.

A variety of plant based sources offer ridiculous amounts of protein. Vegetables alone could account for up to 15 grams of protein in your diet considering a cup of broccoli, spinach and sweet potatoes make up five grams each!

And that's only in one cup. Other alternatives include beans; black beans, kidney beans, lentils, or even soybeans which account for 28 grams of protein in just one cup or lentils which account for 18 grams in a cup.

Not to mention cashews, almonds, sunflower seeds, and vegan protein supplements available out there if you think you really need a little bit extra.

Some supplements include brown rice protein, hemp protein, or soy protein just to name a few which can all be purchased at your nearest bulk barn. Think about it.

In the days where you had to hunt for your food in order to survive,

man’s diet only consisted of twenty percent meat, and that number has since increased drastically.

The standard American or Canadian diet is evidence of that alone. Not to mention the fact, (yes, FACT) that our bodies weren't even designed for meat. Hey, I know it's hard to accept that but we don't have teeth like the lions running in the wild or claws like the wolves that ate the boy who kept crying. For those who want to get scientific or pathological, we don't even instinctually see a living animal and want to eat it. Most of us would probably be horrified to simply see the animal we ate being murdered. Straight up. Carnivores don't mind it,

because it’s in their nature, and they eat their food raw. No Kentucky fried, no dollar menu. No herbs that we use from nature ironically to give the meat "flavour". But why would we need to that?

Where's the beef you ask? Where's your whopper gone at? It's in the increased risk of cancer due to the fact has the potential to rot in our bodies as it passes through because of the bacteria and nutrients we're absorbing.

However, that's a story for another day. The real question is why are the majority of people convinced you need meat for a healthy body and can someone please answer why the evidence shows it can slowly kill?

Still hunting for the Easter Bunny's treats? I'm afraid you'll have to try next year! April 20th marked this year's Easter Sunday. In a tribute to the holiday, we'll look back to what Easter is about and the number of traditions celebrated at this festive time of year. First off, why do we celebrate Easter? For some, it is to commemorate when Jesus was resurrected from the dead, three days after his crucifixion. In a simpler term, Easter is a time for everyone to celebrate the new life and hopes that blossom during the spring time. So how did a bunny laying eggs become a popular symbol for this

spring holiday? Since ancient times, rabbits represented fertility and rebirth. Eostre, the Anglo-Saxon Goddess of Spring, is believed to have had a rabbit as her companion. Christians then used this idea of the rabbit and applied it as a symbol for Easter. The egg is another symbol used to represent the holiday. It is labelled as the representation of a new life as baby chicks hatch from them. Some people enjoy taking the time to paint Easter eggs. The bright and colorful designs on the eggs help serve as great decorative items. Parents would tell their children that if they behaved, the Easter Bunny would lay these colorful eggs for them to find. Kids would spend time crafting nests, hoping to attract the Easter Bunny and receive its special treats. Those with a sweet tooth were happy to know the many treats available at this time. Chocolate bunnies and marshmallow Peeps grow high in demand from shops around the world.

Cadbury's popular Creme and Mini eggs are only offered around Easter, making them an appealing treat everyone must try before they're gone! Whether it is to show faith and celebration in a new life, or to have fun hunting down the Easter Bunny for his sweet treats, we can all agree on the enjoyment had spending time with loved ones on this special day.

Individuality By: Mercedes Guillet

Who should you be? What rules should you follow to be a good person? You've got the media, your friends, family, even strangers who are in your ear, each telling you to meet their respective standards.

They're pulling you in different directions, it's impossible to be everything everyone wants you to be, so whose opinion do you follow? Easy: yours.

Being your own person is a virtue that's easier said than done. There are just way too many variables to be considered before you decide that you can comfortably be who you wish to be.

As people, we want to listen to those variables. Every single one. Our instinct tells us if we follow the orders of others, we'll be better liked and better accepted, which is something we all want, even if we don't verbalize that.

We want to be liked. We want to be accepted. We want to take everyone's suggestions and somehow clump them all together and hope by doing so we will be well liked by everyone, but that's just not how it works.

Think of it this way: doing something to please certain people will inevitably upset someone else.

It is not humanly possible to make everyone in existence to agree with the things you do, whether you do them for yourself or someone else. So why stress over making the right decision when there isn't one?

It's tons easier to do what you want and get flack for it than to do

what someone else does and still receive that same criticism. You don't have to explain yourself to anyone.

If you aren't hurting anybody or yourself, then what you do should not dramatically affect anyone else and it should definitely not decide whether or not you continue to do such things.

What about the people telling you it's better you change? Obviously they've got their reasons, but those reasons have got nothing to do with you.

Please, don't ever, ever question your own character because those around you are pressuring you to change. Their need for you to be different says more about them than it does you.

Chances are if the people around you expect you to change, they aren't the people you need to be near.

A friend is someone who accepts you for all that you are, not someone who expects you to tailor yourself to better suit their needs.

Your choices should be made because you want to make them, not

because any one else expects it of you. You want to do something that isn't common? Go for it! You want to try something even though everyone else already has? Do that too!

Point is, don't let anyone else define who you are and who you want to be as a person. You deserve to decide for yourself the things you do, and so does everyone else.

Respect people for who they are, and in turn, you'll learn that you can grant yourself that same regard. I promise you that you are amazing as is.

Hands Up for Handball! By: Daniel Igne-jajalla

As spring begins to blossom, the outdoors become the perfect playground for Ultimate Frisbee! Ultimate is a team sport played with a frisbee. The objective is for players to pass the frisbee into the opposing team's end zone in order to score points. The sport demands a lot of running and teamwork, which can make games really intense for both players and spectators. DMCI's Ultimate team, led by Mr. Hegel, goes through intense training in order for them to play their best at games. The team holds practices early in the morning and run through vigorous drills. The more experienced players help new players improve their ultimate skills, such as proper throwing techniques and defensive

plays. The team organizes scrimmages, where they split off into their own teams and engage in practice games. “I highly recommend people to join the Ultimate team,” said Martin Cruz, member of DMCI's ultimate team. “We don't bench players. We encourage everyone to participate. It's very fun to play with friends.” Last spring, the ultimate team ranked 7th out of 21 teams in the provincial tournament. At the moment, the ultimate

team is waiting for outdoor conditions to improve. Hurry up snow! Get out of here so we can ALL play Ultimate!

Though the basketball season may be over, another sports season is about to begin.

A couple of weeks ago, Handball began. Handball is a sport similar to soccer. The sport consists of six players and one goalkeeper on a team.

The objective of the game is to score in the opponents net by using various passing and shooting techniques to score. There are two halves that are 30 minutes long. The DMCI Handball

team season is off to a bit of a rough start. So far, the team is 0-2.

Their first game was against Vincent Massey High School . Despite the boys’ best efforts they lost their first game 18-21. The next game they lost to St. James Collegiate, 15-23.

This season the DMCI team are the underdogs, only having 10 people on the team.

Everyone who went to try outs made the team. Only two veteran players are returning from last year, Janus Altasin and Kal Viocent-Labrador.

Although people can overlook the sport, Michael Carino, one of the top players and a man of few words had this to say, “It’s harder than you think; people think it’s easy but it’s not.” Michael works out on a constant schedule to deal with the tough nature of the game. The team practices once a week. The next game is on April 30th at Dakota Collegiate. Be there, fellow Maroons, and cheer on your Handball team!

$LA$HAM ADVICE

What do you do when life gives you lemons? Well the truth is, life never gives you lemons. It gives you unripe oranges that might seem unappetizing at first but you have to let it ripen so that you will be rewarded. In life, you never really understand what’s going on because that’s what it means to be human. You never really know what’s happening until it’s already happening or it’s finished. In other words, never look at anything in life as a negative but look at it as a pathway to something even greater. To be able to see challenges before they come along might be ideal but society is built from the challenges that were overcome by people. If there were no challenges or obstacles in life, we wouldn’t be where we are now. For example, the light bulb was invented because of the fear of darkness. The challenge of having to see a relative from far away was fixed

by making cars and airplanes. Everything that happens in life is often based on a challenge that has been overcome. Whether it’s a broken relationship, failing school or feeling lonely, problems arise that might seem impossible to fix. When you are able to overcome those problems, you’ve reached

a point in life that you’ve never reached before. That point is called inner peace. Yes, there is no such thing as true peace but you’ve reached a point where peace has been restored for the time being. More problems are going to arise, there’s no denying that, but once you learn how to overcome the hardest challenges in life, everything will seem easier than you thought it would be.

On another note, although life may seem challenging at times, never forget to be thankful for what you have. You might not have the entire world, but you do have a part of it and you make up a part. Many times when we’re going through challenges in life we act irrationally and we begin neglecting all the good things in our lives because of that one negative circumstance. It’s a destructive pattern that can often leave us feeling drained and unsatisfied. Yeah, you might not be able to

pump as much weight as that muscle head in the gym, or get the highest grade in the classes you’re in. But the point is no matter who you are, you’ve got potential, and you may not be perfect but that doesn’t mean you have an excuse to stop working on yourself as well as embracing what you do have. Even if you have nothing, or think you have nothing, one thing you do have is power until you choose to give it away, and you’ve got the power to make transformations in your life mentally, physically, and spirituality. For instance if you want to have a stronger build, understand that it’s going to take a lot of hard work and there are going to be limitations along the way. You don’t know how long the next guy’s been working or what they’ve been through so focus on yourself. If you want that top grade then you’re going to have to study harder, but be grateful for that 65% that YOU scored which could have been a failing grade. Make it your goal to do a better job the next time around. You can’t change or control your problems without being the one to making a solution yourself. In truth, problems are nothing but opportunities, it’s all about how you choose to respond. A wise man by the name of Djeuty Maat Ra once said “Problems are nothing but opportunities. We as people are the problems, but we’re also the solutions”. So the next time you’re going through a difficult time, keep that in mind and keep your head up.

The Sun and The Rain

A Poem by F.L.

You, the sun; I, the rain;

In the chaos of my dark storms,

You are the hushed stillness of quiet light.

You stand by my side,

Veiled in my masquerade,

As I stir deep waters and rock frightened palms.

You, the sun; I, the rain;

In the heat of your wrath,

By your side, I remain.

Crimson petals wither lifeless,

The world is silenced in your blaze.

In the palm of your hands lies the desert’s mirage.

Different, we are;

Worlds apart, you may say.

But in unity, we unveil the truest of beauty about.

Born from our chaos;

Birth, from our destruction,

Is the life that blooms and gently treads the earth.

Chapter One: Home “Damn it! He never tells me anything.” It was a quiet spring morning as Kyle stood on the empty street, facing the two-story home. It was a bittersweet sight to the young man. He had not seen home ever since he left for university. Yet, he was frustrated at the sight of it. Gripping tightly to his bag, Kyle marched over to the front yard and stared at the large “Sold” sign with disbelief. “Why did he not he tell me in advance?” Kyle muttered to himself. As if the unanswered phone calls to his father wasn't frustrating enough. Now he had to move to a different neighbourhood without informing his own son. Kyle dropped his bag on the ground and brushed a hand through his soft brown hair. “Why do I feel like he despises me so much?” Kyle and his father didn't have the “best” of relationships. At the most, Kyle's father cared about his well-being, but was never interested in what he accomplished. Kyle was even a bright kid and achieved many things, such as getting top grades in his classes, earning numerous awards in high school, and even being accepted to all eight Ivy League colleges. But nothing Kyle accomplished seemed to impress his father. Instead, his father focused his interest on Lexi. “How will I give my gift now?” Kyle wondered. He crouched down to his bag and took out his present. It was a small red gift box, tightened

with a golden-yellow ribbon around it. A tag hung from the top. It read: For: Lexi Happy 16th Birthday to the most annoying little sister! “Hey there, stinkbrain!” a voiced called out. Surprised, Kyle turned around. Standing behind him was a teenage girl. She wore a denim spring jacket, black boots and dark red jeans to match her long flowing auburn hair. The girl had light skin that glowed in the sunshine, reflecting the warm and pleasant look shown on her face. “Lexi!” Kyle exclaimed. Without warning, Kyle rushed to the girl and squeezed her into his arms, lifting her up from the ground. “Whoa! It's nice to see you too!” Lexi chuckled as her older brother let her back down. “So! How's becoming a doctor going for ya? Did you happen to accidentally kill anyone yet?” “Haha.. very funny.” Kyle responded, rolling his eyes in annoyance. He handed his gift to her. “Happy birthday, lil' Lexi!” “Hey! I told you to stop calling me that!” Lexi argued. She pointed to her brother as she puffed her cheeks in anger. It seemed as steam was about to explode from her head. Lexi quickly turned away from Kyle and put her hands to her hips. “I don't want your gift anymore...” “Still a little brat, hmm? Just one of the things I missed about you.” Kyle said with a grin. As easily tempered he knew Lexi would be, Kyle also knew

how very forgiving she was. Lexi sighed and immediately gave in, taking Kyle's present. “Hmmm... why is it in such a small box? You could've done so much better, big brother.” Lexi mocked as she stuck a tongue out. She smiled. “Thank you anyway, hehe.” “So.. what's been going on?” Kyle asked Lexi with a stern look. He pointed back towards their old home. “Dad decided to move a few months ago,” Lexi began to explain. She shook her head. “for whatever reason, after living here for 26 years, he finally deems this area “too dangerous”. But you know how paranoid dad can be. Didn't dad tell you already?” “Hmph, nope. It's not the first time he didn't tell me anything.” Kyle grumbled as he crossed his arms. “Awwe, come on, Mr. Grumpy! Turn that frown upside-down for me! It's my birthday after all.” Lexi said cheerfully. She pouted her lips to mock Kyle. “You're almost done university! Be happy that you're still alive and living your dreams.” Kyle couldn't help but smile at Lexi. She always seemed to know how to cheer him up. Even if they were born ten years apart, Lexi understood what her brother went through at his age. Lexi grabbed her brother's hand and began to lead him with excitement. “Come on! I'll show you where dad moved. I know he needs you..”
