C hris Likewise knew before Jeff Chudy, and Chudy knew before Bobby Hauck,

and now the Big Sky Conference has found out: Keith Thompson can play some football.

Thompson, perhaps generously listed at 5-foot-9 and 175 pounds, doesn’t cut the most striking figure in Washington-Grizzly Stadium, where the second-ranked Montana Grizzlies battle Northern Colorado Saturday. But the cornerback can not only run and cover receivers, he can pack a wallop.

Ask Idaho State’s Jaron Taylor, who took a pass from quarterback Russel Hill on a bubble screen in the first quarter last week, and got lit up.

“Starting in the Sac State game, our coaches started letting us corners read more and go inside on that bubble,” said Thompson, a senior out of Porterville, Calif. “I was able to get a good read and get inside, and get to him.”

Taylor got up after the 3-yard loss, but then took a knee, and then briefly left the game.

Now he knows, too.“He’s not the most physically

imposing guy when you look at him, but he’s a physical player,” said Hauck, whose club is 9-0. “He’s a good tackler; he likes that part of it, which makes him more effective.

“A lot of offenses try to get the ball on the corner. And with him, it’s a mistake.”

College recruiters often stopped by Monache High School in Porterville, looking for players to fit their football team. They had to go through Likewise, who has coached or is coaching four of Thompson’s brothers, and he made the same pitch to each visitor. He got the same answer.

“Every coach came through to look at players, and I kept telling them, ‘You’ll really like this kid,’ ” Likewise said. “And they’d say, ‘We do like him. The problem is he’s 5-foot-8.’ ”

It didn’t matter that Thompson had run for 1,456 yards and 24 touchdowns – he also caught three TDs – his senior year. The big numbers were 5-8 and, by Thompson’s own recollection, 155 (pounds).

“I was real small and I mainly played offense,” Thompson says now. “So I went the JC route to learn how to play corner. There were two JCs in my area, and there were four guys on my team who all wanted to play the same place.”

Likewise picked up the phone and called his old junior college coach, Chudy. Thompson took off for Bakersfield College, where he helped the Renegades to a 23-3 record over the next two seasons.

Almost two years later Thompson has seen just two losses with the Griz. He’s made the Football Championship Subdivision title game; the Griz lost 24-7 to Richmond last December. He’s broken up four passes this season and has matched the taller, heavier Trumaine Johnson big hit for big hit, with three tackles for losses.

“I was going to take a visit to Montana and had some other trips lined up,” Thompson said of his recruitment out of Bakersfield. “But (Chudy) told me if they offered me here, just to take it.

“And it was a wise decision.”“I really thought he was a real

good player and thought he’d help somebody,” said Likewise, a Californian who played junior college ahead of two years at, oddly enough, Carroll College (in 1991-92). “He just wanted to continue playing, and I think he knew his best chance was to play corner.

“Of course, he has a half-brother who’s playing for the

Patriots – James Sanders. He could get some good pointers there, when needed.”

Kathy Thompson recalls

that Sanders wasn’t many pant sizes larger than Keith when he graduated from Porterville: 5-11 and 170 pounds, though she added, “He’s a lot bigger now.”

Two other sons were larger, she said, and they played in high school, and then they stopped.

“They didn’t have the heart to play college football,” she said. “They were like, ‘Uh-uh, it’s too much work.’ Between my husband (Keith, for whom her Grizzly son is named) and I, we have eight boys. Three are still playing.”

Grayson is the third, a high school junior, which means the Thompsons pretty much have their Fridays, Saturdays (college) and Sundays (NFL) planned out.

“High school splits us up,” said Kathy. “Every week somebody has to miss out.”

Keith’s college games are brought in by computer, though the Griz made a couple trips to California this season.

Kathy Thompson is a corrections counselor; her husband is a former Marine who took injury retirement from the Department of Corrections, and is now in real estate.

The younger Keith Thompson

made no mention of Sanders in his bio in the Griz media guide, but the influence is there.

“James said to the other boys, ‘If you’re not willing to give football your all, just don’t do it,’ ” Kathy said. “‘It’s not fair to the sport, and it’s not fair to you if you’re not going to give it your all.’ ”

And young Keith has given his all.

“He didn’t even question what he wanted to do,” his mom said. “We were like, ‘Keep playing, I don’t care what people say about your size.’ James sees the love of it in him.”

Spring ball was over and

summer workouts hadn’t begun in 2008 when Hauck found out that two promising corners, Jamaine Olson and Lyle Brown, wanted to transfer.

“Those guys opted out in May,” Hauck said this week. “All’s well that ends well – we’re better off now – but it was kind of a crisis situation at the time. We went into last season, and all the guys we played at corner hadn’t taken a snap in Division I football.”

Johnson, a true freshman, Thompson and fellow JC transfer Andrew Swink split almost all of the plays in 2008. That the Griz went 14-2 speaks to the job they did. The wins were nothing new

to Thompson, and neither were the crowds – he played in front of 12,000 in Bakersfield.

“I think going to junior college first really helped me out a lot,” he said. “The defense we ran there was pretty much the same. It wasn’t that big of an adjustment.”

Beyond that, Thompson doesn’t say much about his own exploits. His actions have spoken volumes. This is his fourth year of college, and he’ll wrap up his sociology degree – he wants to be a counselor, like Kathy – in May. On the field, he just wins.

“We need to step it up on D,” he said this week. “We need to get back to where we were playing last year – fast and physical.”

“He’s truly humble,” said Likewise. “But I’ll tell you what, if I had 11 Keith Thompsons I think I’d be able to invade Afghanistan and I’d have Osama bin Laden inside of a week.

“I knew he could play somewhere – it was just getting somebody to take a chance on a 5-foot-8 guy. I’m super happy for him, and glad somebody took a chance on someone who wasn’t the prototype.

“Sometimes those little guys can make big plays.”

GRIZZLY GAME DAY / Top 25 picks

VISIT US IN THE BITTERROOT!

By RALPH D. RUSSOAssociated Press

The last time Ohio State played in the Rose Bowl was Jan. 1, 1997. It’s almost hard to believe it’s been that long.

The Buckeyes under coach Jim Tressel have been the dominant team in the Big Ten for the past decade, winning at least a share of the last four conference titles. But in a BCS world, Texas and Oklahoma have played in the Rose Bowl more often in the past 10 years than Ohio State.

“It’s something that Ohio State hasn’t been to in a while,” tight end Jake Ballard said. “It’s something that I think the Buckeyes need to bring back to Columbus.”

The Buckeyes are a victory away from ending that Rose-less run.

No. 15 Iowa visits Ohio Stadium on Saturday and the winner gets a trip to Pasadena, Calif., and a New Year’s Day date with the Pac-10 champion.

The Hawkeyes have gone without a Rose Bowl bid even longer than the Buckeyes. Hayden Fry was still at the helm in Iowa when it lost to Washington 46-34 in the 1991 Rose Bowl.

A victory Saturday in Columbus might be the only road to the BCS for the Hawkeyes and Buckeyes.

Ohio State has played in a Bowl Championship Series game each of the last four seasons, but a third loss would likely relegate the Buckeyes to one of the lower-profile New Year’s Day games.

No. 16 Utah is at No. 4 TCU, and the Horned Frogs have legitimate national title hopes. They’ll need plenty of help to get to Pasadena for the BCS national championship game, but beating the Utes represents the toughest task remaining on the road to an undefeated regular season and the Frogs’ first chance to play in any of the five big-money bowls.

The Grizzlies need a statement game, especially with Cat-Griz week coming up. By all rights UM should be the No. 1 team in the country, but a pathetic showing against a pathetic ISU squad gave FCS voters little choice but to name Southern Illinois the new No. 1.

Even with a few illegal blocks to add to their earlier penalty woes, UM still has the best return squad in the conference. And now we know that Brody McKnight has ice water in his veins. Big kick Brode, big kick.

The Griz secondary is still a bit suspect in some areas and now there’s word that Trumaine Johnson is injured again. Plus, let’s give props to the pesky Bears and the Big Sky’s No. 1 pass defense.

Bears junior ’backer Matt King is having a breakout season with 83 tackles, including six for a loss. He’s one of the reasons UNC is third in the Big Sky in total defense right behind Montana, which has its own stud in senior Shawn Lebsock.

Northern Colorado got abused last week in allowing 14 rushing first downs vs. Sac State. That’s the most since UNC allowed 17 rushing first downs at Kansas on the opening week of the season. BTW: The Griz D gave up a season-high 11 rushing first downs at Sac State three weeks ago.

As long as Marc Mariani continues being Mariani, Griz fans have nothing to worry about. But here’s a concern: Ty Palmer, UM’s No. 2 receiver, has 2 catches for 19 yards over the last three games. Let’s hope the senior from Missoula gets a few more targets on Senior Day to balance things out, for the offense’s sake.

He didn’t get in the end zone last week, but Montana’s Chase Reynolds still leads the league in rushing yards (945), attempts (203) and touchdowns (12-tied). Something tells me Reynolds will atone for those missed TDs against the Big Sky’s eighth-ranked run defense.

Three QBs from the Big Sky Conference are in the top 10 in passing efficiency in the FCS: At No. 9 Matt Nichols (EWU), No. 8 Michael Herrick (NAU) and No. 5 Andrew Selle (UM). That’s right folks, No. 12 on the Griz roster is actually the fifth-best passer in the country.

A key holding penalty and some personal fouls against Montana cost the offense some yards and scoring opportunities last week at ISU. The Griz, who are penalized more yards than any other Big Sky squad on average, need to get those things cleaned up this week.

Peter Nguyen

No. 28Year:

FreshmanPosition:

Running backHeight:5-foot-8Weight:

175Hometown:

Bellevue, Wash.

Freshman brings winning ways to GrizzliesBy SCOTT JOHNSON

for the Missoulian

His name is pronounced, “Win.” As in, that’s what his teams do.

Montana freshman running back Peter Nguyen is providing a spark out of the backfield for the unbeaten Grizzlies.

The soft spoken Nguyen, who also returns kicks, has shined in limited playing time. He has rushed 14 times for 104 yards, including a touchdown against Western State. Nguyen, who also has two catches for 18 yards, ripped off a 57-yard run against Portland State, as well as a 61-yard kickoff return at Northern Arizona.

Nguyen is a product of Bellevue High School, a football powerhouse in the Seattle area. Bellevue’s 2008 state 3A football championship was the school’s sixth state crown in eight years.

Nguyen, who’s brother David is a senior running back for Bellevue, said people commonly mispronounce his Vietnamese surname. He said announcers butchered it a lot during high school football games. Bellevue announcers were even guilty.

“During my sophomore year they did it like three games in row,” he said.

Q: Your high school football team went 14-0 en route to a state championship. Do you remember the last time you were on the losing end of a football game?

A: Yeah, it was my junior year. We lost in the semifinals to O’Dea. (Griz safety) Donny Lisowski was on that team.

Q: What attracted you to Montana?

A: I really liked the school when I came here. I liked the program. My high school coach thought it was a good program, too.

Q: Who else recruited you?A: A lot of other smaller schools

you’ve probably never heard of.Q: What were your impressions

of the state of Montana before you were recruited?

A: I think everyone that lives in a city just thinks of Montana as just mountains and no cities.

Q: You’re from Bellevue, Wash., which is basically a suburb of Seattle. That doesn’t have anything to do with this question, but do you know what Bellevue means in French?

A: In French? I have no idea.Q: It means beautiful view.A: Really? Oh wow. I had no

idea. It is beautiful.Q: You went to Bellevue High

School along with safety Sean Connors, who is redshirting this year. Who committed first and when did you know that both of you were going to play for the Grizzlies?

A: It was when we were on the same recruiting trip. I really didn’t decide until signing day. A couple of other teammates from high school are also on the team as walk-ons – (linebacker) Eric

Nelson and (receiver) Cam Warren.Q: Prior to a playoff game in

2008, the Bellevue football team was involved in a rollover bus crash. What was that experience like?

A: Man, that was a tough experience. Things like that are tough. I know we became closer together because of it.

Q: Bellevue runs an offense with three running backs in the backfield called the Wing-T. Do you think the Grizzlies have the personnel to work in some Wing-T plays this year or perhaps next year?

A: I don’t think so. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it run in college.

Q: Fellow running back Thomas Brooks-Fletcher is also from Bellevue, but he graduated from Interlake High School. Are Bellevue and Interlake rivals?

A: No, but I lived in that area. I saw him play. I was just in middle school. It was pretty cool.

Q: What are three words you would you use to describe starting Griz running back Chase Reynolds?

A: I think he’s a great running back. He has a lot of patience.

Q: What’s the biggest adjustment on the football field moving from high school to college?

A: Just getting to know the team. Feeling comfortable. I think that’s the first step you gotta take.

Q: What has been your personal highlight this season?

A: Pre-fall camp. Just making new friends on the team. I think that was cool for me.

Q: It’s the Northern Colorado Bears against the Montana Grizzlies this week. Have you ever seen a live bear in the wild?

A: No, I haven’t. I wish. I don’t hunt, but I want to see one.

Q: This Saturday is also Senior Day. I know you’ve only been on the team a short time, but which senior would you say has been an unsung hero on the Griz?

A: I don’t know. I know we have a lot of good seniors. I look up to all of them. I know all of the seniors work hard. Even the ones who aren’t playing work really hard to help make us a better team.

Q: Based on what you’ve seen on film of Northern Colorado, what kind of team can fans expect see Saturday?

A: Every team is good. It just depends on what happens on game day.

Q: The Grizzlies’ average margin of victory at home is 22 points, while on the road its 7.75 points. What is your explanation for the disparity?

A: I’m not sure. I know we always go out and play hard.

Q: Do you get frustrated when you have to raise your hand for a fair catch?

A: I don’t get disappointed. I just concentrate on catching the ball. Everyone would like make a

G18 – Missoulian, Saturday, November 14, 2009

By MICHAEL HEINBACHof the Missoulian

As the Montana football team plays its final regular-season home game of the decade, it’s hard not to be impressed with the resume the Griz have racked up over the last 10 years.

They’ve either outright won or shared every Big Sky Conference title in the 00s and will finish with more wins in that period than any other program in Division I. That’s more than Appalachian State, Oklahoma, Boise State or Texas. Oh yeah, we’ll mess with Texas.

Just as impressive is that the Griz

have won nine or more games six of the past seven seasons, and have 10 or more victories in a season four times in the past six years.

With such unmitigated success, it’s no wonder Montana fans have become some of the most passionate in the country. It seems like almost every home game sets a new record for attendance at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. And the Montana faithful don’t just pack the house, they rock it.

If you don’t believe the home of the Griz is one of the loudest football shrines in the country ask former UM offensive lineman Chris Orwig. He and his father visited Columbus, Ohio, on

Oct. 24 to watch the Ohio State Buckeyes play Minnesota as 105,011 Big Ten football fans looked on at Ohio Stadium.

“How did the noise at the Horseshoe compare with Washington-Griz,” I asked Orwig over brunch at The Old Post last weekend.

“Not even close,” he replied. “It’s way louder here.”

While this bit of information for an unabashed Buckeye fan was enough to make me choke a bit on my double-stuffed french toast, I began to realize how lucky we are to have such a devoted fan base here.

That being said, I’m calling on Griz Nation to top itself one more time.

Saturday’s game with Northern Colorado will be the final regular-season appearance for the 19 seniors on the Montana roster. Their years of dedication, hard work and sacrifice have given us much to cheer about.

So let’s send the seniors out with a bang. Let’s get louder than ever as we celebrate Montana’s 12th straight Big Sky championship. Let’s get them ready for another Brawl of the Wild at Montana State before the Griz take another run through the FBS playoffs.

What we have here is truly something special, whether the rest of the country recognizes it or not. Grizzly fans should take this opportunity to show the seniors and the rest of the Griz how much they’re appreciated by getting louder than ever. They deserve it.

The picksn Northern Colorado at No. 2

Montana: Even in defeat, the Bears were impressive in falling 38-35 to Sacramento State last Saturday. They scored five second-half touchdowns, tied their season high with 477 total yards of total offense and senior quarterback Bryan Waggener threw for 325 yards. There’s no need to recap how

the Griz won last week, but expect to see them play with much more fire Saturday.

Michael: Griz 38, UNC 13. Fritz: Griz 41, UNC 20. Bill: Griz 34, UNC 21. Nick: Griz 29, UNC 7.

n No. 18 eastern Washington at Southern Utah: It’s also senior day for the Thunderbirds, who have an impressive win over UC Davis on their resume, but are just 4-5 overall. Their most dangerous weapon is receiver Tysson Poots, who ranks second in the FCS in both receptions per game and receiving yards per game with 8.57 catches and 112.14 yards. Poots also ranks 18th in scoring, at 8.57 ppg. But the tell-tale statistic is the fact that SUU is undefeated at home.

Michael: SUU 24, EWU 21. Fritz: EWU 40, SUU 20. Bill: EWU 34, SUU 33. Nick: SUU 31, EWU 28.

n Portland State at Idaho State: The Bengals got oh so close to knocking off heavily-favored Montana last weekend and should come in with a little momentum. Portland State is looking to right the ship after four straight losses. Is this the Saturday Idaho state breaks through for its first win of the season in its 11th game this year? I just can’t bring myself to pick the Bengals.

Michael: PSU 24, ISU 23. Fritz: ISU 24, PSU 23. Bill: PSU 28, ISU 17. Nick: PSU 36, ISU 20.

n Northern Arizona at No. 19 Weber State: The Wildcats face a must win if they have any shot at reaching the postseason. They’re coming off a much-needed bye week after getting trounced by the Griz in what was supposed to be a tight battle for Big Sky supremacy. Look for Weber to come out guns a blazing, though it’s NAU that averages a league-high 306 passing yards per game.

Michael: WSU 24, NAU 21. Fritz: NAU 34, Weber 17. Bill: WSU 27, NAU 20. Nick: WSU 33, NAU 26.

n Sacramento State at Montana State: The Bobcats are are 6-1 against Sac State in Bozeman and the Hornets haven’t pulled off a victory there since 1991. Look for that trend to continue.

Michael: MSU 23, Sac State 10. Fritz: MSU 23, Sac 21. Bill: MSU 38, Sac State 28. Nick: MSU 27, Sac State 23.

EUGENE, Ore. – One of Arizona State’s biggest challenges this weekend at Autzen Stadium will be containing Oregon’s ground game, which is ranked among the best in the nation.

The No. 14 Ducks, with their distinctive spread-option offense, are leading the Pac-10 with an average of 233.6 yards on the ground per game. They’re the ninth-best rushing team in the country.

Redshirt freshman LaMichael James averages 115.89 yards a game overall, and 135.5 yards in conference games to lead Oregon. Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli is the team’s second-best rusher, with an average of 61.4 yards a game and nine touchdowns.

Oregon’s offense also has an “X” factor in the return this week of running back LeGarrette Blount, who was suspended after punching a Boise State player after the opener. He was reinstated earlier this week and can play Saturday, although it is uncertain if he will.

All of that poses problems for the Sun Devils ( 2-4 Pac-10, 4-5).

“It’s making sure that you are disciplined enough to know your assignment and patient enough to know that they are going to move the football and to not try and make plays that you’re not responsible for,” Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson said.

Two weeks ago, Oregon ran for 391 yards and had 631 yards of total offense in a 47-20 victory over then-No.4 USC. The Ducks had 570 yards total offense and 236 yards rushing last week in a 51-42 loss at Stanford.

It was Oregon’s first conference loss, and it dropped the team from a season high ranking at No. 7. But the Ducks (5-1, 7-2) are still in good position to contend for the Pac-10 title, which has been claimed by the Trojans for the past seven seasons.

“We still control our own destiny. If we win out, we’re going to the Rose Bowl ... but we can’t lose another one,” safety T.J. Ward said.

First they’ll have to get by Arizona State, which has the best rush defense in the Pac-10. The Sun Devils are

ranked sixth nationwide, allowing just 87.44 yards per game.

Last season, Oregon was able to run for 304 yards in a 54-20 victory in Tempe. Masoli and Blount each ran for two touchdowns in the game.

“Obviously we need to be a little more disciplined than we were a year ago,” Erickson said. “You’ve got to simplify things in a plan against them, just so you know what you’re doing.”

Arizona State will start true freshman Brock Osweiler at quarterback. Erickson said earlier this week that Osweiler would compete with Danny Sullivan for the daunting job at noisy Autzen Stadium, but Sullivan sat out of practice with a sore right biceps.

The 6-foot-8 Kalispell Flathead graduate replaced Sullivan and threw a 23-yard touchdown pass in the second half of last Saturday’s 14-9 loss to USC.

But it’s obvious that Arizona State’s run defense will be its best weapon in a game that Oregon will be anxious to win given its loss to the Cardinal.

“We’re all really mad and not happy at all about that whole situation,”
