GRIMETHE FOUNDATIONS OF ITS SUCCESS
HISTORY A style of music that emerged from Bow, East
London, England in the early 2000’s primarily as a development of hip hop, UK garage, dancehall and drum & bass.
Grime was able to be spread via different radio stations such as Rinse FM, déjà vu FM, Freeze 92.7 and Major FM
Grime has received exposure from TV such as Channel AKA, the youth orientated BBC station BBC Radio 1Xtra and the recently defunct Tim Westwood TV
STYLE AND CONVENTIONS Grime is typified by complex 2 step, 4x4, break beats, generally
around 140 beats per minute, or sometimes structured around a half time rhythm, and constructed from different synth, string and electric sounds
Stylistically grime draws on many genres including UK garage, Drum & Bass, Hip Hop/Rap, and Dancehall. The lyrics and music combine futuristic electronic elements and dark, guttural base lines.
Grime videos usually consist of the artist and his ‘Gang/Crew’ almost carrying you around the places that they live whilst rapping and displaying a lot of hand gestures as well as showing off wealth (close up of a Gucci belt) and showing what they think is living a good life (Girls shaking ass’ and some people smoking). Although recently some grime videos have used the technique of literal interpretation.
