Home visits will be conducted on Monday, 5 May and on Tuesday 6, May. 2. Special voting at your registered voting station: Any voters who will be absent from the voting district where they are registered on election day (7 May) may apply to cast their vote early. A PROTEST was held last month by com-munity members who blocked the en-trance to Greytown Hospital.

The protesters claim that the hospitalmanagement had a tendency to employpeople from outside the area, even for themost menial posts.

The community accused an HR officialofdemandingbribes for jobsandnepotism.

He has been removed from his positionin the local hospital and relocated whilstan investigation into theaccusations is car-ried out.

As a result, KZN MEC for health, Dr

Sibongiseni Dhlomo, visited the hospitallast week and also met with board mem-bers.

He informed the community that newemployment conditions would be imple-mented at the start of the next financialyear.

“All other opportunities from level oneup to four, in and aroundGreytown, shouldbe biased towards local people, becausethere are somanypeoplewhohave just gotGrade 12 and they can actually performjobs like cleaning and cooking,” said Dhlo-mo.

THE Hermannsburg Nature Club recent-ly went on an exciting weekend campingouting where Francois du Rant, a localtree expert in the False Bay Park, wasable to introduce them to a host of localtrees and each one had an anecdote oran interesting fact or two to go withit.

Besides tree spotting, the groupwas also able to do some bird-watching.

A trip through the newly opened west-ern shores drive in the IsimangalisoWetland Park offered an opportunity tomarvel at some large game - hippos, awide variety of antelope, giraffe, warth-og, to name but a few.

Sadly, although there were 24 pairs ofsharp youthful eyes trained on thebush, the elusive leopard remained elu-sive - until the next time.

A weekend is not a long time whenthere is so much to see and do, but thegroup made the most of the opportuni-ties available to them and managed topack a whole lot of looking and learninginto the time available.

THE Office of the KZN Pre-mier has partnered withMedia24 – owners of KZN

local news – to bring the highlysuccessful spelling bee project tothe whole of KZN.

The spelling bee began in theZululand community in 2010,through Media24’s local newspa-per in that area, the Zululand Fe-ver.

Because of the success of theevent, and its rapid growth,Media24 mandated that it be tak-en throughout the KZN province.

The Office of the Premier, inits ongoing commitment to youtheducation and upliftment, has de-cided to partner with KZN localnews(encompassing Fever, Week-ly,Gazette and Echotitles) to incul-cate a love of the English lan-guage amongst second languageEnglish speakers from disadvan-taged schools in the province.

Media24’s head of local papersin South Africa, Ishmet Davidson, said the company is ‘thrilled’ atthe prospect of the partnership.

He said this will see hundreds

of spellers throughout the prov-ince take part in the competition, which has hundreds of thousandsof rands in cash, book and bursaryprizes up for grabs.

“Media24 sees the spelling beeinitiative as having the potentialto significantly increase the focusand discipline of pupils when itcomes to learning the English lan-guage. Partnering with The Officeof the Premier, schools and teach-ers,webelieve wecanmakeaposi-tive impact on education in theprovince,” said Davidson.

Pupils ‘get loose’ to shake out the tension before spelling starts at the Zululand Spelling Bee 2013.

Premier’s Office partners on popularMedia24 spelling bee event

CALLING all word wizards andbook nerds.

Media24 Local News KZN(publishers of the Fever, Echo,Gazette and Weekly titles) haspartnered with the Office of thePremier to bring previously dis-advantaged learners throughoutthe province their popular spell-ing bee competition.

A spelling bee works accord-ing to knock-out, where spellersare given a list of pre-chosenwords (which will be printedin the abovementioned titles)two months before the competi-tion.

These words have to belearned by entrants, who willthen gather at competitions intheir areas, namely Zululand,North Coast, Durban central, Pi-etermaritzburg, or the SouthCoast, to spell their way to glory.

The competition is open to

grade 10 and 11 learners (onefrom each grade – ie two perschool) from previously disad-vantaged schools who speakEnglish as a second language.

There are hundreds of thou-sands of rands in prizes up forgrabs, including a full medicalbursary, a business bursary anda bursary to study journalism.Teachers and schools also re-ceive prizes.

One of the beautiful experiences of life is towalk on a golf course on autumn mornings in theKZN Midlands, listening to the birds and enjoyingthe smell of freshly mown grass.

Throw into this mix the company of likemindedcompanions, the thrill of competition and thesupport of a generous sponsor, and the result issurely what the French call “joie de vivre”, looselytranslated as “a feeling of happiness or excitement about life”.

We here in Greytown simply call it the annualFNB Greytown Country Club golf championship, which was held on 5 and 6 of April.

After two gloriously sunny days of golf, OscarNdawonde successfully defended his crown with

a score of 144 gross, defeating Bheki Mlangenion the last hole by one stroke. And we all thoughtICC T20 World Cup cricket was exciting!
