GREYT NEWS THE NEWSLETTER OF GREYHOUND ADOPTIONS OF FLORIDA MARCH 2011PUBLISHER: MARILYN VARNBERG EDITOR: BARB PIETRANGELO [email protected] Volume 4 Issue 1 _____________________________________________________________________________________ This issue is dedicated to all of the beautiful broods that we have had in our lives. My first greyhound was a brood she is our cover girl this issue. She was with us for only a year, but she made a huge impact on our lives. Having always had sporting breed dogs, the reality of living with a low key, loving animal who needed no training to be an ideal pet and friend came as a most pleasant surprise. Being wonderful came naturally to Runner. She inserted herself into our lives without missing a beat. When she passed on, we were at a loss as to what to do. Marilyn then performed one of her everyday miracles and found us not one, but two of Runner's daughters and they are the twosome who have filled our lives and hearts to this day. Runner was the only dog in 30 years who inspired me to write poetry. I know that many of you have a brood in your life. Enjoy every day that you have with themthey are irreplaceable. This has been a busy few months for GAF. A number of fundraisers have kept our merry band working very hard. We started off with the Rummage Sale at Marion Market in November, then on to the Carrabba's Luncheon followed quickly by the Xtreme Bowling for Greyhounds and this past weekend the return of our Pancake Breakfast at our new venue, the Havana Country Club in the Villages. Each of these events have been a success, definitely due to all of the hard work by our friends in the Villages Greyhound Club and all of you who supported

This issue is dedicated to all of the beautiful broods that we have had in our lives.  My first greyhound was a brood ‐ she is our cover girl this issue.

Enjoy every day that you have with them‐they are irreplaceable.

This has been a busy few months for GAF.  A number of fundraisers have kept our merry band working very hard.  We started off with the Rummage Sale at Marion Market in November, then on to the Carrabba's Luncheon followed quickly by the X‐treme Bowling  for Greyhounds and  this past weekend the return of our Pancake Breakfast at our new venue, the Havana Country Club in the Villages.  Each of these events have been a success, definitely due to all of the hard work by our friends in the Villages Greyhound Club  and all of you who supported

these ventures.  Over the next few months we will be trying some more new activities including  Yappy Hours that will be scheduled throughout the spring and summer .

We are starting our 4th year of publication of  Greyt News. It hardly seems possible.  I recently looked back at our first issue ‐ Marilyn was on the cover with the sparkling,  new  Kia van. There are some miles on that van now and we have some miles under our belt with Greyt News.

We continue to try to make Greyt News an enjoyable, informative read and we hope that you will continue to give us your input and comments.  Happy Birthday Greyt News and many more to come!

 MARILYN'S MUSINGS

It must have been at least a dozen years ago that I first walked into a kennel full of broods on a greyhound breeding farm.  I had never really thought about them…our focus at that time was taking as many young dogs off the track as possible.  That led us to a few farms who had taken their racers back when their careers were over.  And, of course, at these farms were MAMA DOGS!!

In those days, we knew of no one who actively found homes for the girls who were done with their second career…first a racer then a puppy producer.  It became obvious what happened to them when that last career was over.

It was quite an education, taking these girls into our program.  They were nothing like the youngsters.  Actually, most of them had no use for the young dogs!  They were truly retired and took it seriously!  Many of them came into the house like they had been here forever.  I had some actually walk into the house, check out the bedroom and jump right up and make themselves at home on my bed!  How did they know to do that?  Some hoarded toys….collected them and kept a huge stock of stuffies on their beds.  It always made me think of how they kept their pups close to them when they wandered off too far!

Other girls, usually older ones, were not comfortable in the house at first.  Their lives were spent on the farm in a large pen or a crate, certainly not in a house!  Our wonderful, cranky Dizzy who was at least 12 when she came here, totally refused to stay in the house.  She hated every minute of being here…she stood at the back door and cried.  When she was out in the yard with the others, she walked to fence, looked down at the kennel and cried.  After trying three different times, we gave up and sent her back to the kennel.  She never did get adopted and spent her final days happily digging in the dirt and living with her kennel mates.  It was certainly not what we wanted to see happen, but Dizzy didn’t care.  She did it her way.

Page 4: GREYT NEWS · Runner was the only dog in 30 years who inspired me to write poetry. I know that many of you have a brood in your life. Enjoy every day that you have with them‐they

Our almost 14 year old Zeanne tried to pull the same thing…..but the third time was a charm and she now lives happily in the house, barking at me when I don’t prepare her breakfast quickly enough.

They all have made us laugh!  They can be silly in an old lady sort of way or stubborn or bossy or downright snippy if someone misbehaves.  But in all the years we have been finding homes for the older

girls, I have loved reading the reports from our adopters.  They all say the same thing….what an amazing experience it is, living with these girls.  If ever there was a group of greyhounds who deserve a soft bed,  a few toys, a good meal and the love of a family, it’s our greyhound broods!  They truly have earned their retirement.

Two Lucky Broods By Jennifer Boutin

Hi everyone,

My name is Daisy and I want to tell you all about my life since I met Grandma Marilyn!  I was a brood mom at a greyhound breeding farm and did not leave that farm until I was 9‐years‐old.  I think nine is a very mature and dignified age; the perfect age to settle down and find a home, which is exactly what I did!  Now I have a comfy couch, a greyhound brother, a greyhound sister, and two humans who love me very much.  A typical day in my life includes walks, playtime, petting and sleeping (I am a greyhound after all!).  I always say goodbye to my humans when they leave for work with a kiss and a tail wag!  I take nice long naps and wait patiently for them to come home.  That's when the fun begins!  We play with my toys or run in the backyard until it’s time to nap again!  The absolute best thing about my family is that they give me space to be myself!  They don't mind if I want to lay down across the room.  I'm laid‐back, low maintenance, and able to entertain (or sleep by) myself – it’s skill  I acquired with age.  The humans tell me they are lucky to have me.  Each tail wag, each smile, each time I come running for a treat, I think about how amazing life is and how much happiness I have to share with my family!  Now that I am 11‐years‐old, I can see that good things come to those who wait!  I hope you have enjoyed my story.  Although no two broods are the same (just ask my sister, Cheery) ‐ there are many like me; good, easy‐going girls who just want a human to love and a quiet place to nap!

It’s nice to meet you, my name is Cheery!  The most important things to know about me is 1) it's always playtime and 2) I never saw a storm cloud without a silver lining!  I haven't been in my forever home long but let me tell you, homes are AMAZING!  They have toys, treats, beds, toys, and, most importantly, HUMANS!  It’s a good thing my humans met me before taking me home ‐ they knew I was more like a 1‐year‐old puppy than 9‐year‐old brood mom!  Can you believe that they think I will be tired after long walks, romps in the backyard, and toy time?  But no matter what, just squeak my favorite hedgehog stuffy and I'm ready to go again!  Well...that is unless I'm laying on my human's lap getting a belly rub!  It's true, I'm a lucky lap dog!!  I believe in going through life with a spring in my step, a toy in my mouth and a human's hand petting my belly.  I do take some things in life seriously though.  My first and most important job is to make sure my people are happy.  Whether they need a muddy romp in the backyard, my goofy grin as I help with chores, or a portable space heater to snuggle with ‐ I am ready to assist!  Another serious task is playing with my greyhound brother and greyhound sister.  But enough seriousness, I've got so many fun adventures ahead of me!!  Trips to the store, the park, the pond, the beach, and anywhere else I can pull my humans.  In fact, I bet I can get the humans to have a fun adventure very soon.  Now where did I leave my hedgehog stuffie...

WHAT WE'RE READING NOW.........

This past month while on vacation in the  D.R., I got a chance to re‐read "Let's Take the Long Way Home", a book that I reviewed here a while ago.  Gail Caldwell's book was as readable then as it is now.  If you haven't had a chance yet to delve into this memorable memoir, please give it a try.  (Available in Ebooks for Nook and Kindle)

This month  I loved Dog Walks Man, by John Zeaman (Lyons Press 22.95).  An entertaining little book that is a perfect prelude for spring reading.  We can all relate to some of the author's musings and you will experience a few ah‐ha moments.   Give this one a try if you are yearning for an intelligent but light read.

This is a book that will make you yearn for simpler, older times.  It is a compilation of Photobooth  shots and is aptly called Photobooth Dogs.  I swear I saw an old boyfriend in the pages.  A  great gift book, but I want it for my very own.  Available through THE BARK.com.  It is by Cameron Woo, cofounder and publisher of The Bark, my favorite canine publication.
